After many many years I finally decided to get the pedal that started it all for me: the Zoom 505ii.
It's super fun to plug this in again after something like 20 years.

this was my first pedal ... i was like 12 ... i saved up for it for months ... i finally got my mom to drive me up to a local sam ash to get it ... and i was so young and stupid i didnt realize i would need a second guitar cable to make it work ... i guess i just figured it would come with everything i needed ... i was so bummed when i got home and realized all i could do is look at it for the rest of the night until i could get my mom to drive me to get another cable the next day ... anyway thats my zoom 505 first pedal story ... i loved that thing ... it was my only pedal for quite awhile ... now im 32 and and have a full blown pedal addiction... the 505 was my gateway pedal lol... it stopped working years ago but sometimes i think about picking another up as you can snag them for like 25 bucks

A lot of people seem to be surprised at how good it sounds but the fact is many people bought this when they were new to guitar and / or had a cheap guitar. Later they get better at guitar and buy better guitars and amps etc and forget about
the zoom left in the cupboard and never use it again.
The fact is, if you give zoom 505 to someone with a decent guitar / amp / headphone and you will get a great sound!!!
It was made pre 2008 (pre economic crash) before everything became cheap shit.

What you told us about your settings is great, it's how we learn and your a good guy to share that with us. My father was a massive guitar geek and as they say "The Apple never falls far from the tree." and by the age of 7 was well on my way. But what you just described is ptobably the same for 1000's of beginners and if you hadn't have set it that way you may not be playing now, something kept you at it, not saying it's the Zoom 505 ll but the device was a learning tool for you so it's definatelt helped Thanks buddy.

The best demo I've seen of this so far.
I am excited to be picking up one of these next week for only $10!
I plan on using it not for the any of the distortion effects, but all the effects I don't have on this such as all the modulation, slow attack
and such. I've got a good selection of overdrives and distortions that will do a better job.
It will also come in handy for silent practicing at home and for going direct for gigs when required. It would be handy as part of a simple flyrig. A couple ODs/distortions and this.

My first pedal was not a ZOOM multifx, (it was an Arion SFL-1 stereo flange) but my first ZOOM pedal was the big G7. 1ut, which I STILL don't know how to use properly. I then started collecting smaller pedals to do specific things instead. Now I am trying again with the ZOOM, but I find that playing with the ZOOM actually means I am less focused on the actual experience of just playing. But for the DESIGN of sonic experience, it's very mind expanding.

I never actually owned the 505 but a friend of mine did and the "bigger brother" GFX-707 was the first pedal I ever bought new. It's a more expensive and advanced unit but the look and feel is very similar, 90's Zoom plastic fantastic DNA through and through. ;)
I used my 707 with electric guitar for gigs for years, direct into the PA , and it actually sounded great. I know now that it actually does have amp simulation but I must've lucked out with a default setting or something because I surely never set it up. 1997-98 these arrived on the market, i had the 505 which came out in 96, 24 years ago that also had an in built tuner. The 505 ll was virtualy the same but for a design reconfiguration, you get folk trying to take the piss, these Positive Grid amps "Spark" are the dogs bollocks at the moment for those learning, the Zoom 505 & 505 ll were also the dogs bollocks in their hay day, ok they were no where near as technologicaly advanced as the Spark but at the time it didn't matter. The 505 is a future classic i am sure about that and the 505 ll that also, but it's the original 505 in it's first guise that will go the way of the Maxon Tube screamer and the like, we talk about effects pedals now but in another few years it will be modeling amps and devices that are going to be as sought after as some of the original pedals from our era, late 60's onwards.

@@CatPickStudios same. and that metal preset... haha I'm starting to believe that multi-effect processors are not for the beginners but for more experienced musicians who know what to do and when. Having multi-effect units (Zoom 606 and POD HD) didn't actually inspire me to practice more and learn about modulation effects, pedals did.. But replacing pedalboard with tiny pedal for rehearsals and small gigs would definitely do!

What I never did like about this pedal is how you only ever have 2 other patches to choose from. So If your A1 is your clean, A2 is your distortion, A3 is a Delay and A4 is "I am the Fly" intro by Wire (google it), and you want to skip from A1 to A3, you've got to awkwardly go through the distortion patch. So for actual practical purposes it's a bit useless. Nevertheless, a fun little noisey toy.
[Edit] - I haven't mentioned my first pedal. It was a Marshall BB2 Bluesbreaker overdrive pedal. Beautiful pedal which I wish I still had. I wish I knew where it went but I replaced it with a DOD Grunge pedal, because the BB2 wasn't distortiony enough for me. The DOD Grunge sounds like a bee orgy in a beer can. It makes the Metalzone sound like a delicate little flower.
