You can add a wah pedal, Dumble style OD, Boss BD-2 or octave fuzz of your choice to include one of his less frequently used effects.
Ben, I think you make some good points here. A few things to remember, it needed to fit on a Metro 16. You suggestions are larger pedals, this would be problematic to sell the "mini rig" concept of the giveaway pedalboard, nor would they fit with this board platform. Secondly, this giveaway was sponsored by Sweetwater and done in collaboration with them, meaning we had to use pedals that were in stock and available through Sweetwater. I don't see the Keeley Workstation, Alter Ego, or the Micro Q Tron in their inventory or in stock. I think there a lot of way to "Skin The Mayer Cat", I tend to go for more of the Continuum era stuff, and Trio era since that's more of the iconic tone to my ears. These were much more scaled back rigs compared to what's being used now, and pre-dates the use of the filter effects, or any compressor use. In any case, I appreciate your feedback, and certainly if the only criteria was getting there at the lowest cost there would be lot of pivot options to make, differently from what I did with Sweetwater.
Vertex Effects fair enough. Your choices definitely make a lot more sense under the limitations you laid out. I wasn’t trying to be confrontational btw just wanted to make some counterpoints.
@Luke Monsensey thank you for that, I didn’t realize you were the judge of who asked or that I needed permission to share my relevant opinion but okay. Thanks for the unnecessary rudeness. I’m sure that that attitude gets you far.
I have always loved the Ibanez TS Mini. I think it sounds just-as-good . . . as any of the Tube Screamers. Always enjoy your informative videos Mason. Stay Safe brother.
The sheet metal top is a great idea for these pedaltrain boards.. the rails just never give enough purchase - going to need to look into this idea. Cheers man
That's the nicest pedal board I have ever seen. Never had the money to buy pedals but I submitted in hopes of getting that board to sound like my favorite guitarist John Mayer. New subscriber here, nice video Mason!
Great build! When I use dual lock it always comes off of either the board or the pedal if I try to remove a pedal. Once it comes off it will not stick again. Doesn't seem to matter if I just put the tape on or if it's been on for months.
If it’s coming off it’s for two reasons, first reason is you didn’t clean the surface before you applied to dual lock. Second reason would be, it’s supposed to remain sedentary for about 12 to 24 hours before you really start pulling things on and off, almost like a curing of the adhesive. If I follow those steps I’ve yet to have a problem in over a decade
I did let it sit for 24 hours. Maybe it's not cleaning the surface well enough. I'll try that next time. I really liked the tip about flipping the bottom of the one pedal over to get a clean surface.
Had the same issue before, the reason for my case is that I use the wrong gauge, the 400 grid dual lock I applied was too strong for pedalboard usages, should choose 250+170 or 250+250.
I enjoy your board builds very much. I don't do well with soldering however and am curious as to why you cut the power supply cables and re-solder the ends. For space or aesthetic reasons?

Where can I find an interface like that that doesn’t use power? Building a small board and would love to have an interface, but not sure if the buffered ones are worth the power when I already have a EUNA.
What if you got like 12-14 pedals, and as we know, power supplies basically have like 7-10 outlet wires to power the pedals.. None of them have enough for a whole board.. So do most guitarists with more than 10 pedals on a board use 2 power supplies? I dont see any other way, since power supplies do not really cover more than 10 pedals at the most, right? hi i wanted to ask is the interface a normal junction box or an effects loop? because i see that you connect the pedalboard to the effects loop if im wrong.
This one is strictly a pass-through for a centralized connection point for the input and output, we have other videos and more sophisticated versions on the channel if you’re interested in that
AmaIng rig here Mason. I’d like to know what’s the significance of placing the steel string after the drive session? Is it an always on pedal in this case?
Uncle Mason: I was just taking a calculus class in college and they kept talking about vertexes, and since a vertex is part of a parabola it made me think: Mason should do an EQ pedal or something and call it "the parabola"
It's not a universal thing on all Boss pedals, and I'm attempting to generalize this technique no matter the Boss pedal. Many of the Boss pedals won't allow this because the mezzanine board with the pots push the main board right to the edge of the enclosure, where the tuners don't have any pots to deal with so there is more space inside.

JRAD archer-$199.00
Ibanez TS-Mini-$79.99
Xotic EP boost-$120.00
Ibanez analog delay mini-$119.99
Boss TU-3-$99.99
Final cost
$818.96
Cost difference-$44.82 more for my suggestion
Some additional points:
- For an extra $45 you get much closer to the overdrives and boosts John Mayer actually uses, as the Tone workstation was based on John Mayer’s tonal needs and includes a comp as well as a bluesbreaker/katana boost that are excluded in Masons board, yet are much more central to Mayer’s tone than a Dumble OD and certainly an EP boost which I’m pretty sure he doesn’t really use often/at all.
- Moreover, Mayer has used analog delays, tape delays, and digital tape delay emulations, so digital tape echo emulation pedal, would be a much better alternative as it can handle much more of the delay tones of John Mayer.
- My suggestion includes an envelope filter which John Mayer is famous for using.
- As a final point, if use the same power supply as Mason does in this video (Truetone CS6) you can always one more pedal, as my board concept leaves one free adapter for one more pedal. You can add a wah pedal, Dumble style OD, Boss BD-2 or octave fuzz of your choice to include one of his less frequently used effects.

Custom made interface :o how does it works on a pedalboard?
This one is passive, it's really more of an organizational thing. Normally on our boards we'd include all of our input and output buffers in this box as well.
@@VertexEffectsInc ok so that put in the same box input and output right? I want one jeje

hello! i'm a viewer from Portugal ... can i ask for an advice ... i'm wanting to buy an J Rockett Archer ... i dont know what to choose !!! i'm in between the Silver or the Gold one ...
after seeing this video i was planing in buying the Silver one .... but then, recently i saw another video of you for sweetwater showing your pedalboard and you had the Gold one ... !!!!! i got confused !!!! lol
so i would like an advide from you ....
i have an Vox Ac10 amp and i play a fender strat and a gibson Les Paul ... wich one (silver or Gold) would match better with this "rig" ?
i'm looking for the best Archer (silver or gold)
that would match better with the VOx AC10C1 and my les PAul ...
cause i'm a bit in a strugle to find a good sweet OD to match with my Les Paul...
in my pedalboard right now i Have the Hudson Broadcast and the Greer LIghtspeed ...
Thanks so much for taking your time to read my comment
i would really appreciate to hear from you, cause i really trust in your recomendations
and i would take a much safe decision if i hear your opinion...
thanks so much
Rui from Portugal
I think they sound pretty close - I’m happy with either
WHERE IS YOUR CANDY FROM SWEETWATER!!?? Seriously... every order I have ever placed with the good folks at Sweetwater has included a baggie of mixed candy. It's a really cool little extra they do. Of course I have a fairly major sweet tooth. Shout out to Ed Needler ... my 'go to' sales engineer at Sweetwater!
... ... now I'll watch the rest of this cool video.
We’ll send the bag with the board to the winner 🤣🤣🤣
What do you think. Which one is better, steel string before or after ts9? Ep booster first or last?
Steel String as the last OD I think is best and most accurate to how it might be used in a John Mayer or SRV context.
EP, if you want it to emulate a Echoplex, then before your delay would be closest but I don’t think most folks use it like that.
Thank for replying dude
I recently submitted my entry. This is my dream pedalboard. ❤️
Good luck!
Can't tell you how many times I've watched this!! Wondering with the new SSS, would you be able to take the Archer out and just use the SSS and Tube Screamer?
They do different things. The SSS is really about the Dumble Amp tones...the pedals are sorta doing a different thing.
@@VertexEffectsInc Got it! Already placed order for your SSS, can't wait to try it out!
@@jiraphatnimkittikul3435 Amazing! Thanks for the support!
hello Dr. id like to know how do you come around pricing on building your rigs?
there is no pricing, I don't offer the service for hire, just for UA-cam tutorials
@@VertexEffectsInc thank you for your response. i want to start doing something here in Lake Jackson Texas but i dont know how to price the work, lol. ive worked on my pedal board so i know more or less the time it will take me to do something like what you do. yes i have watched your videos intensely lol.
@@samxulumte9648 there's a premium on experience and knowledge to take into account in addition to your efficiency. I would consider what a day's work is worth for you and work backward from there on an hourly rate.
@@VertexEffectsInc no doubt. And thank you. I will take all this into consideration. Again, i get a lot of knowledge by watching your vids and take what i learn into my own projects bringing me experience. and you are right, there is a premium on experience.
hi i wanted to ask is the interface a normal junction box or an effects loop? because i see that you connect the pedalboard to the effects loop if im wrong.
This one is strictly a pass-through for a centralized connection point for the input and output, we have other videos and more sophisticated versions on the channel if you’re interested in that
Vertex Effects thanks for answering! I also wanted to ask if you plug it straight into the amp or the fx loop of the amp.
Isaac Jinivon this would all be in front of an amp, no effects loop
AmaIng rig here Mason. I’d like to know what’s the significance of placing the steel string after the drive session? Is it an always on pedal in this case?
It's emulating an amp tone of a Dumble, normally you'd run your drives into the amp, not after it.
what's the thing called in which you plug in your guitar and send it out to your amp?
interface box? Patchbay?
I don't always enter giveaways. But when I do, I prefer John Mayer pedalboard giveaways.
😂😂😂
man ..i need this
good luck!
💙
Is it worldwide ???🙏🙏🙏
yes it is!
@@VertexEffectsInc Wow is awesome !!! Thank you so much :)
Awesome!!! Very good job guys!!!
Thank you!! Make sure to enter to win!
What would be the total cost for this build?
Uncle Mason: I was just taking a calculus class in college and they kept talking about vertexes, and since a vertex is part of a parabola it made me think: Mason should do an EQ pedal or something and call it "the parabola"
yes!!!!
@@VertexEffectsInc when you make it, im going to need an Uncle Mason built pedalboard
Awesome!! I Thought I was the only one who does that with boss pedals ;)
Hope to win this pedalboard!!
🍀🍀🍀 good luck
@@VertexEffectsInc Thanks man!! Greetings from Bogotá, Colombia.
Hi. Any more insight why you place the steel string on that position?
It's after the overdrives like I normally recommend, treating it more like an "amp" with the pedals running into it.
Great Video! But couldn't you just flip the backplate of the Boss TU-3 with the rubber on, or isn't there enough space inside the pedal? :D
One thing I noticed not discussed are John’s other effects (Roger Linn) and placement. I would be curious about this.
Would’ve been too big and only used on one song I think for the BTMB sound
Vertex Effects he used the Adrenalinn 1 for BTMB, the adrenalinn 2 on Slow Dancing and the adrenalinn 3 on Heartbreak warfare. I’m pretty sure at least 😅
Full blown Mayer board would be insane!
Donnie Simmons what was the AL used for on Slow Dancing?
Vertex Effects my bad, I meant “I don’t trust myself”. He uses the AL envelop filter.
I had slow dancing on the brain lol
Donnie Simmons 👍👍👍
