It would be super helpful if you guys talked more about how you're dialing in the tones on the amp and guitar, especially since EQ etc. is a big part of sounding like the artists. So talking about what EQ settings you're using, which pickups are on/off, and maybe talking a little bit about what those specific things do to the tone would be a nice addition. I think a lot of new players struggle to really understand how to use EQ so having examples like that would be awesome!
I love these videos btw, thank you guys for putting out great content :)

For a guitar that ridiculously cheap, Squiers are such good value. Not a high end guitar (obviously) but the quality is surprisingly good. I have one (not my main guitar) that I played for a while and def recommend it, esp for beginners.

Got my dad the bullet for $119 for his home recording studio. Not the 3 single coil version, but the tremolo version with the dual coil rear pickup. Messed around with some amp/pedal plugins in cakewalks free DAW through a focusrite scarlet solo 2 and man i got a REALLY similar tone out of it. Wonderful guitar for the price.

I think that the power supply of John Mayer's pedal board alone will cost more than this entire rig.^^
I'm not a huge John Mayer fan so I can't comment about how authentic the tone is. But I think that this small and affordable setup sounds really good, no matter how close it gets to the artist's rig. Good job!

I wasn't a Mayer fan - for a long time considered him sappy pop music. Until I saw him play live. Wow! I began to check out his vids and his tunes NOT played on Top 40 radio and I discovered quite possibly the most underrated guitarist of our time. He's that good. I'm not trying to convince you, but I'm well aware that in some guitarist circles, Mayer is not "distorted" enough to be taken seriously. No, he's not a shredder, but he'd damn good.

William Allison honestly it's pretty easy to figure out affordable rigs for any of these artists, but the videos are so entertaining

    • @KeeperOfPoops
      @KeeperOfPoops 7 років тому +3

for Jeff i thought cos he uses an EBMM JP6 which andertons don't have they could get the JP60 and i know you'll scream (No sigs for someone else's rigs) but i decided if a guitarist uses someone else's signature model that you can get for without/by busting you can use it so JP60
i'm not sure what amps he uses, either he has a head and cab or some rack mounted amps offstage or he goes straight from his fx pedal into the guitar and PA, but i think the Blackstar HT Studio 20 or Club 40 cos in the Mick Mars sound like the guitar into amp sounded very much like guitar tone in the song I Burn so Studio 20 to save on pennies
i know he uses an FX unit but i don't know which one so i'll say use just 2 fx which will be Overdrive and Wah as he uses wah in most of his solos and the overdrive for his higher gain tones, for the solo in Bmblb it sounds like he has a moderate fuzz so TC Electronic Rusty Fuzz, maybe a tiny bit of delay in some solos to beefen it up so Eccholizer by Mooer and the reverb they can get from the amp
      Musicman JP60 - £670
      Blackstar HT Club 40 - £550
Tone City Golden Plexi - £40
Dunlop Cry Baby Wah - £90
      Mooer Eccholizer Delay - £50
TC Electronics Rusty Fuzz - £41
      sealing the budget at £1441

1500 pounds isn't really expensive for any instrument. Don't forget that they're aiming for gigable rigs. And also I don't really think that anyone ever bought the exact same rig that is shown in any of these videos. I take it more as an inspiration, for pedals that I could enjoy and that could make me sound more like some of my favorite artists, which type of amp could would be suiting my style of playing, etc. Probably most guitarist have spend way more than 1500 pounds on their rig/set up. The difference is that it is usually build up over years.
Unless of course you're having one of those crazy days and just spend 200000 pounds on a 58 Les Paul. But well, we all go a little mad sometimes

It's just refreshing to see a budget rig thrown together and to see it sounds great, maybe put more budget rigs together to inspire purchases :D they don't necessarily have to emulate anyone in particular, it's just nice to see what can be achieved for less money!

I went in to a guitar shop in the 90's (as a kid) and asked what would get me Eric Johnson's tone. The guy just laughed. He had no suggestions. He said EJ plays expensive gear and had a ton of talent.
Its great to see you do this series to help people achieve a sound they are looking for without guitar forums telling them they need $50k amps and $1k pedals.
The JM tone was "close enough" for the budget. If you closed your eyes it sounded like JM playing through cheap gear. Hahaha But it sounded like JM! Much closer than I can get with more expensive setup!

I've got a Squier Affinity Strat and a Champion 100 amp, plugged them in and dialled down the gain on my EHX Crayon to act as a clean boost and got a pretty good Mayer tone for what I had to work with (and without even 1% of his ability)

John Mayer is the quintessential "tone is in the hands" player. The reason you see so many people play bits and pieces of Mayer songs but not whole songs is due to those people only being able to nail the Mayer feel for portions of songs.

The Who is a good one and i know pete had his own les paul deluxe, so they should get an SG with mini humbuckers cos he did use an SG once, he has Hiwatt which andertons haven't got, so Fender or Marshall and he has a good fuzz tone so they have to try a few fuzzes to get it right
