    Jayco used to produce the 806, I owned one for 3 years. My 3 toddler boys boys and I went on many camping adventures. It was all I could afford after divorce. Great memories.

      Shawn, I have an 1986 Jayco J 806 Deluxe it's still hanging in there, keeping an eye on the wood for dry rot, not bad for a 34 year old pop-up.

    I discovered something with pop-ups. It doesn't matter how small or large it is. They can all pretty much fit 4 adults very comfortably. I have an older one and the water doesn't work in it which I thought would be a big deal but it isn't. Having an awning allows us to cover our outdoor setup which has a prep table (I ordered a fish cutting table that has a sink!).

    My wife and I use to own a 8' Palomino pop-up back in the late 90's. It had a dry weight of 900 lbs, had a built in ice chest, 2 burner stove top, awning, and factory tinted windows. I pulled it with a Ford Splash, single cab, 4 cylinder, 5 speed with no issues.

    Coming from years of tent camping, I would love a popup with out a sink, stove, and "fridge". I just want a small cabin, two beds, and a heater. Maybe a residential AC on the side.

    • @jamesmathias6973
      @jamesmathias6973 3 роки тому +1

      I want the same thing! I actually took the sink, stove, and icebox out of my current popup and put another bed in it instead. There is an outside connection for the stove (if not you can buy a portable stove, we use coolers to keep things cold, and just use water from the campground. If they just moved the door over and could make a larger bed at the bottom you could sleep 6 with some storage (that is all you need). You could buy a portable AC unit or heater if you wanted it.

      Look to an a-frame. Rockwood and Aliner and others produce cabins on wheels. With heat, a/c, the works, in a tiny instant-up package.

    • @CroakerOutdoors
      @CroakerOutdoors 3 роки тому +1

      @@herrp8765 Thanks for the reminder. Been in a bunch of A-frames but, back then, I wasn't impressed with the space compared to the price per square foot of living space of a pop-up. Although, now after some more research I've dropped the idea of a pop-up due to the time requirement to deploy and break down along with a few other reasons. Will have check out a-frames again. Would love to camp more during the summer and this past one with the heat, humidity, and bad weather was tough.

    LOL American concepts of 'small' are hillarious.... we have a Pennine Pathfinder in the UK which is the same weight as the unit shown and similar dimensions... that has a separate toilet compartment with washbasin, 3 burner hob, full oven and separate grill, more storage, and considerably more refined design. Also a huge custom awning which can be extended with extra 'bedrooms'. The Pennine Fiesta offers most the same facilities, including the bathroom, in an even smaller package.

      That would be perfect. Just a bed and a bath. I don't want to buy and tow a trailer and still have to use the campground bathroom!! But I don't want all the other bells and whistles inside taking up space.

  • @campbellvonjordan68
    @campbellvonjordan68 4 роки тому +2

    Man a wet bath situation like that... you'd have to be very comfortable with the people you're travelling with. Someone with an upset stomach with be sharing that story with everyone on board.

  • @smoguli
    @smoguli 4 роки тому +2

    Older ones where lighter, my '96 Rockwood LTD weight about 1,000 lbs and can sleep 6. The slide out beds are only 48" wide and we have no fridge, maybe that's why it's lighter. And judging by the finish, look of the frame and general construction of the first model you showed us, not a lot has changed on how these popups are built. I tow mine with a 4 cyl Dodge Journey and it's maxed out (according to the owner's manual I can tow a max of 1,000 lbs with 5 passengers and luggage). So far after 3 years I haven't encountered a hill that it cannot climb (sometime slower in a lower gear but it still makes it to the top). I thought about buying the V6 but it's towing capacity is not much higher, 2,500 lbs with 1 to 2 passengers, 2,000 lbs with 3 to 4 passengers and only 1,500 lbs with 5 to 6 passengers.
    30 years ago my father in law used to tow a popup camper with his '86 Nissan Micra, with a 4 speed manual transmission... somehow it survived the ordeal. In Europe they tow 2,000 and 3,000 lbs trailers with small cars, It's a shame we have to buy humongous pickup trucks and SUV to do the same in North America.

    The smallest pop-up I ever saw was a one that was pulled behind a Harley Davison. I'm not sure if it was a homemade one or not. The second one reminded me of the 95 Jayco Cardinal designer series we had. It had the wet bath like that and a California King in the back. The bed held the wife and me plus her cocker spaniel and my 85lb Siberian Husky with room to spare.

    I've always wondered with those open front toy haulers is it safe to pull without anything up there? I feel like the back end would be too heavy and want to lift the back of the truck up. Also, it would be hard to judge your tongue weight and what truck you might need to pull it, just some thoughts.

    Problem with both of these is counter heights are way below standard. You have to bend over to use them. I have a pop-up with a high wall option that gives you normal counter heights and allows for a taller refrigerator with a freezer. Something to think about when looking at any pop-up camper.

    Pop ups look awesome, I'd love to have one for a motorcycle track day. But since I'm a RV noob I have some questions. How safe are these in a lightning storm? Is it even possible to get ac inside one of these? Or will I just have to get a big fan to sit in front of?

      You can certainly get one with an ac unit installed. Even the smallest campers have that as an option. Just need to find one

    Not to pop your balloon but several years ago I saw on the internet a pop-up that was smaller. It had one fold out twin size bed. They may not even make it now

    The body of the 176 is 8 feet long. You must have arms like an orangutan if you can reach corner to corner.
    Length over all is 11 feet 9 inches, including the tongue.

    Its still a pop up. I will never own another pop up again. They are tents that take 5 times longer to deploy and fall apart in 5 years if you use them on a regular bases.

    • @herrp8765
      @herrp8765 2 роки тому

      My instant-up Coleman 6 person tent with rainfly is all staked down and has furniture in it within minutes. It would take me longer to level a trailer before even beginning all the other steps to set up a popup. So yeah, there are definitely time issues and labor to consider. Specially for us over-60 folk.
