Non toxic weed killer is an important topic to me because I love to enjoy my yard with my family but do so in a chemical free way. Most people cover their property in chemicals with no understanding of the dangers they present to their wellbeing. Non toxic weed killer diy has been an area of frustration for me because I was buying expensive organic blends that didn't work half the time. It was like throwing money out the window. I finally discovered a blend that works and wanted to share it with you.
Organic weed killer for lawns is important because we learn more everyday of the devastating impact that weed killers have on the body. They are linked to cancers and many neurologically based conditions. So this is why I chose to go natural and use the best non toxic weed killer. This weed killer is cost effective, simple to make, and just has a few items involved. It is made using orange oil, vinegar, and dawn dish soap. Pretty easy...
The most important thing is that is is non toxic weed killer that works. I used so many brands and mixes that were far more expensive and didn't work half the time. This works and is a great system to use in order to keep your yard looking nice and chemical free.

I use salt rather than the orange oil. Works great! It also kills ants and any other bug it's sprayed on including earwigs fast! It doesn't effect the bugs it doesn't come into direct contact with like bees.🐝❤️
I did a mixture of just vinegar and salt and sprayed it on the moss that was growing all over the patio (I am currently in Washington state) and it killed it and it's not been back.
Been using it for years and I have dogs and they've never been bothered by it. 🤙🏼

You have to be careful with the salt if you are spraying in areas where you want things to grow or if you plant something else there later.

      Good to know.
I don't use a ton of salt (I just use the cheap stuff in the blue can and do about a 2-3 second pour which is MAYBE 1/4 cup in a gallon mix). I set the sprayer to be more of a straight shot rather than a mist when doing next to plants and I have never had it kill anything I didn't directly spray it on and I spray it literally next to plants and bushes (about 4 inches from the base).
Also, this mix works best when it's able to set in the hot sun for a bit to help burn it but I use it in the shade all the time. 🤙🏼

I love people switching to salt and "salting the earth." In 5 years, they'll be saying stop that and switch back to safe alternatives like Roundup. BTW, glysophate is a salt.

With this solution make sure you have a good sprayer .... one that is bleach approved or the vinegar will corrode and destroy the inner spraying mechanism. Most home improvement/hardware stores have them.

Lloyd, I do lawncare also. Two gallons of this stuff cost about $30. The same amount of Spectracide's version of Roundup costs about $4. Also, people don't know how "Roundup" works. It sticks where you spray it (same reason you add Dawn to this homemade version). Then dries after 5-15 minutes, depending on weather, and becomes inert. It is 100% fine. The only time you might have a problem is if you spray it on food crops that you then eat. But it would of course kill that food, so there's nothing to harvest anyway. The only exception is if a mega-farm has a GMO food plant that can resist Roundup, so that trace amounts could get into the food. But the danger of eating that is not confirmed. Glysophate does not hurt the human body directly, but it can hurt your microbiome, which is obviously a bad thing. However, it has gone inert long before the food is even picked, let alone eaten. That said, I would rather avoid it too. But using Roundup in our lawncare setting is 100% fine.

@@Kube_Dog Yeah, after I saw how much the ingredients for this home made spray cost, I thought "Yikes!" Fine if you are making it to spray around your own yard, but really not at all cost effective for commercial use. I can't see too many customers being willing to pay that cost, especially when you add in labor.

@@lloydhlavac6807 Any upcharge, my customers would question why. If I tell them because I'm trying out some goofy homemade vinegar herbicide off the internet, they would not accept that. We talk, and most of them have tried stuff like that, ant-killing concoctions that don't work, etc. This is just more high-dollar "green" fiddle-faddle that upper middle class people with more money than scientific knowledge want to play with and push on others because it makes them feel virtuous. IMO. Good luck with your business. I'm heading out to mow now. :)

When you say it works well, does that mean it takes care of clover, ground ivy, dandelions, goose grass, crab grass, mushrooms...all of that and still doesn't kill the actual grass you want to keep? I heard from a neighbor who uses apple cider vinegar and dish soap and it absolutely kills the weeds but it also kills the grass. Since most of my dandelions and mushrooms are invading my grass (thanks to other neighbors and my own kids), I'd love to know the answer.

Dr. Z, The 30% vinegar is made from corn. So how much of the toxic chemicals sprayed on that corn and absorbed during growth survive that process to end up in the vinegar we will spray on our lawns?

what is Dawn dish soap made of?

    • @DiMo28
      @DiMo28 5 років тому +1

The dish soap acts as a surfactant to help keep the solution on the weed. Otherwise, the solution will just roll off and is not as effective. You don't have to use Dawn. In fact, many people use baby shampoo because it doesn't have the dyes and other chemicals in it.

@@DiMo28 Exactly. Excellent. It is for this reason that Roundup is safe too. It sticks where you spray it, does not run off, and goes inert after 5-15 minutes (unlike table salt). Also, glysophate is a salt, but a variant that goes inert. This fear-mongering is ridiculous.
