- HTC released the Sapphire Edition of the U Ultra, and it is time for a scratch test with JerryRigEverything's Moh's Hardness Picks. One of the quickest ways to differentiate between glass or sapphire is with a hardness test. This video will also test the Zagg Invisible shield Sapphire Defense screen protector for the Galaxy S8. It advertises that it contains 'sapphire crystals' infused into the 'hybrid glass'... Is that a bunch of corporate speak for 'crappy screen protector'? Lets find out.

sir Fmmm zagg sapphire line up IN GENERAL scratched very easily. learned that the hard way 2 years ago. only reason why I still shop the regular screen protectors from zagg is because there's a kiosk 5 min away from me and they have always given me free replacements.

PS: graphene is a mineral stronger than diamonds and is named graphene, the tougher brother of graphite, you can find graphene in graphite pencils but the amount is very small.

That is exactly how and why the Mohs hardness scale has been invented and used. And these numbers correspond to the hardness of some common minerals, used as standards:
1 - talk
2 - gypsum
3 - calcite
4 - fluorite
5 - apatite
6 - feldspar
7 - quartz
8 - topaz
9 - corundum (sapphire is a colorless variety of corundum)
10 - diamond
And it was a fast and simple field diagnostics method: if your sample scratches fluorite, but is being scratched but apatite - it has a hardness value between 4 and 5.

That pink glass is THE BEST looking glass backed phone I've EVER seen. It has almost multicolor "stages" in it that give it an almost "angelic glow". AMAZING!!!

I've been waiting for this test! HTC really did a great job!
HTC is brilliant! Now they should merge all their excellencies together on a killer flagship; stereo speaker setup, excellent DAC with headphone jack, front and back OIS+EIS ultra pixel cams, back and front sapphire glass with 2K &or 4K OLED edge to edge screen tech, IP68 or higher certification, Uh-Oh protection, and clean UI/excellent battery management... with these specs $1000 isn't that bad of a price.

An actual sapphire screen protector would technically be more useful than a built in one. A shatterproof plastic screen below a sapphire protector would provide the best of both worlds, as the more brittle sapphire protector could be removed and replaced, in the unlikely event something happens to it. Would be expensive to keep up, though. I'll personally stick to tempered glass protectors, even if a real sapphire one does get made.

tempered glass on a curved phone is the worst experience ever. had on on my S9, it too 20lbs of force for each letter you wanted to type. I hated it and switched to plastic immediately.

I have been using HTC since 2009. They never disappointed me! As a technophile, HTC produces the most useful, stable and quality phone. However, I think HTC phones are hard to use when you are not a tech guy.

i would not like ceramic phone. Look at that Mii mix or whatever its name was - one drop and you have splinters sharp as glass everywhere. One crack and you have two parts phone.

Not only that would be brittle as fuck, but if you accidentally hit a regular piece of glass, like a windshield, or a mirror in your house, or a photo frame, or even a tablet display, with enough pressure you're 100% guaranteed to destroy it. I've tried throwing a Gorilla Glass 3 slab against different kinds of materials like a frisbee. It safely left some marks in my wall paint, and dented my regular anti-theft glass windows. But hitting corner onto another piece of Gorilla Glass 2 with literally the softest throw I could possibly perform, it exploded in hundreds of pieces. Hardness is not only important in relation to scratch resistance. It's also very important in relation to shatter resistance...

The Shellrus “sapphire” was tested for hardness and it seems to be sapphire. Wouldn’t scratch until Mohs 8. $80 mostly scratch proof screen protector.

I’ve an old LG G2 (display already broken courtesy of Dad) that I took a lump of my quartz to. Naturally, the glass easily gouged. However, the camera lens wouldn’t scratch at all from the quartz, even under substantial pressure.
