- Cartoons can have such fascinating histories, given how much goes into making them! When making a cartoon, you need to develop the characters, the setting, you need to make a pitch for your show and think of episode ideas, and eventually if you're lucky, you'll have to make your pilot episode!
A pilot episode is an episode of a show that's basically a test, to see what works and what doesn’t, along with giving the network or producers a good idea of what the final show will be like, if put into full production. Pilot episodes are often created several months to years before the final show enters production, and as such they often have many interesting differences compared to the final show!
In this video, we'll be going over some of the most interesting cartoon pilots out there. We'll be showcasing the development histories of shows like Jimmy Neutron, SpongeBob Squarepants, the many Sonic The Hedgehog cartoons, The Fairly OddParents, Family Guy, and many more! We'll even discuss pilots you can't find nowadays, as many of them have become lost media.

To put that into perspective the Soviet Union still existed when it was made
After 16 years of trying, Povenmire landed a pitch with Disney. The network did not immediately accept the show, but told Povenmire they would keep the packet. Povenmire assumed this meant an end to negotiations, aware that the phrase usually "means they throw it in the trash later." Disney then surprised him by accepting.

When it says “SPONGEBOB SQUARPANTS!” it sounds like they’re announcing he’s being added to Smash.
I can imagine his victory theme being the last bits of the theme song from the last title drop to the flute.

@@SirBlackReeds Meanwhile, IDW's take on the Sonic franchise, which takes place ENTIRELY in Sonic's world, has introduced several new fan favorite characters, and makes great use of the games' lore. All while starting off with the most basic possible first issue, "Robots attack furries, Sonic helps." Sometimes the start of something is B A S I C because you need to get people paying attention before you branch out. Sonic X had the success that it did only because the Adventure games laid the groundwork of Sonic interacting with humans.

Its always fascinating how drastically different shows looks like prior to their series become a thing
It’s almost always a treat when the pilot has a whole lot of differences
The Clarence Pilot almost looks exactly the same as the final show.
I remember watching the Pilot for Regular Show. Most characters had their series' final look but the animation style made it look like a completely different thing.
Mordecai's side features (especially his white feathers) reached all the way to his eyes, and his eyes also had a very slight tint of yellow. Rigby had far bigger eyes at some points while his hair was much shorter.

The whole 90’s-00’s was just a giant euphoric and nostalgic era
Some of the greatest and original cartoons/tv shows of all time came from that era. The downside was that A LOT of shows became copy and paste compared to now. There are still copy cats and genres now, but for every one modern day copy cat, there are 5 totally radical 90’s animal action shows lol but I miss it.
@@sosmooth13 I have memories to shows from the PBS channel. That channel was so so good back then but now, if it even runs, probably has old reruns, but I doubt that partially. Even the animating styles were somewhat better in the old shows compared to new shows. Some styles have improved, whereas others have declined. It's just a giant blast to the past.

There was a pilot episode for Bob the Builder made back in 1997,and that’s been found after 23 years,the pilot featured early designs of Bob and Scoop (who at the time was known as Digger) and was only approximately 120 seconds long,it was made by Ealing Animations and was created to pitch the series to HiT Entertainment, Neil Morrissey still voices Bob in the pilot,whilst Stuart Greenall voices Digger.
There was a similar thing with the playhouse Disney show (well now Disney Junior cause of the name change back in 2011/2012) called Handy Manny which is a show that is similar to Bob the builder basically and like Bob the Builder there is a pilot (which is partially found but still lost cause based on the lost media wiki it’s roughly 11 minutes long) and the Handy Manny pilot was made by DKP studios (now called Jam Filled Toronto) and was directed by Kyran Kelly who is known to be involved for the movie Gnomeo and Juliet (as a designer), some of the Barbie movies (as a art director), etc.
While as of me making this comment, we don’t know for sure what the pilot is about (since all of the information I can find for now are vague) but there is a few second demo reel where you see Mr Lopart (who is Manny’s neighbor who sells candy basically) and Manny’s tools which similar to Scoop in the Bob the builder pilot, some of the tools do look different (both big and small) for example with Squeeze (who is Manny’s pliers) is only grey with her eyes are on her sides where as in the final product where she is mostly grey but her handles is green where as her eyes are more on the top but further out compared to characters like Rusty (who is the monkey wrench) which is really interesting!

That really depends. While it is true that its post-cancellation episodes zigzag in quality, its pre-2002 cancellation episodes were good (and, along with Futurama and South Park, the perfect cure for those who had to give up watching The Simpsons due to that show's decline in quality. To me, it happened in season ten when every episode felt like it was trying too hard to be funny. Then Phil Hartman was murdered, and that just ruined everything).
Its a curse, you DO get tired of it, but no matter how tired of it you get, you can't stop watching it.

3 D animation wasn't as good back then
I lived near the ocean institute (which is what we called it) and had field trips to it 3 separate times in elementary school. (My school was literally 5 minutes away up the hill) in every time I went, even outside of school, I am incredibly surprised no one ever told us that the man who made spongebob came up with the concept while working there. My trips to the ocean institute were in the early 2000's extremely close to the beginning of the show.

The pilot for MEGAS: XLR was an interesting situation. It was a 15 minute short that aired as Lowbrow during the What A Cartoon showcase, and then was reworked into a full 23 minute episode titled Test Drive. The designs were more or less the same, but the animation in the short was more exaggerated and "cartoony". While some shots were reanimated for Test Drive, several of them were reused from Lowbrow which caused an interesting contrast. It didn't feel out of place, though, and the reanimated segments were somewhere between the pilot and later episodes in style to make the transition a bit less jarring.
Still one of my favorite series to date.
Same! one of my favorites as well.
The art styles were pretty close, the only really jarring contrast was the way they opted to design the eyes, where the pilot used just pupils while the final version included the whites of the eyes.

Late response, but in Spongebob Season 1 DVD there is a documentary about the origins and initial concepts, it's on youtube as a Behind the Scenes documentary, it's really good and shows the Pitch Bible (also now leaked and online)

FUN FACT: This pilot, in particular, was created by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Brian Cosgrove and was supposed to be a musical TV show. The rights were never given by the creator of the original book series, and so the concept was dropped. It took another 9 years before the pilot for the show that was actually produced was made, which is also almost completely lost.

I can’t believe that I can listen to a man talk about cartoon pilots for almost 40 minutes and still find it great
something people do not realize about a fictional character is they usually are made with a secret truth only they know and no one else on the staff characters in the show or the fanbase knows and its told to the voice actor by the creator so it can be sorta in the back of their mind when they need motivation....it can be a character being gay actually inside or knowing something he should not or just something simple as being mad at a certain character for a petty reason....that i think enhances a series...a character does not reveal everything to us or their friends...that makes them feel real
Butch Hartman graduated from the same high school I was in so a couple years ago he came into my class to talk about his career. I was even the one to escort him from the office. His mom was with him and they were in the office chatting up with the ladies in there. For whatever reason I didn't really care so I was calm which was good. Butch asked questions about the school and stuff. In the class he drew some stuff on the entire whiteboard (which my teacher didn't erase for the rest of the year). Nice guy. It was weird seeing someone "famous" in such a natural relaxed setting. This dude wore skinny jeans with a suit jacket.

Cosmo and Wanda’s introduction scene here really fascinated me after I realized that the first movie essentially updated and re-animated this exact scene when Timmy is being shown a quick flashback to when Cosmo and Wanda appear for him for the first time.
Why was there never an episode of Jimmy Neutron that introduced bootleg boy-genius rival Johnny Quasar!? He could confront Jimmy and claim that he's the real owner of Goddard! He could even have a weird bootleg version of his family featured in that test still image. But of course he's secretly evil

I know this isn't a cartoon pilot, but Robots 2005 is a very interesting movie. It's one of my favorite movies of all time. There's a video from Blue Sky Studios made in 2004 called a Sneak Peek of Robots and it showcases a lot of almost fully polished cut scenes, concepts, and characters. I wonder what the movie could've been before the final version. I hope to see more canceled concepts and scenes released. That movie is barely talked about.

I think I saw the original airing of the SpongeBob pilot. I swear I've seen that intro before, and I know I sat down to see the show premiere. It aired the same week as my 6th birthday. Still going on so many years later too. The little Sponge keeps on going

I'm sure a lot of people subscribe to the fan theory that Gerald Robotnik based Shadow off of the Echidna's prophecy of Super Sonic that you can see in Sonic 3. That's why Shadow's quills curve up like that and the reason Gerald decided to use a hedgehog to be the ultimate lifeform. It would be interesting if at one point Silver was intended to be to Hyper Sonic what Shadow is to Super Sonic.

Miraculous Ladybug's pilot was 2D animated. It had an anime feel to it more so than it's now established 3D animation. As for the characters, the only one who had the most drastic change was Adrien, who was originally an entirely different character named Felix.
And in the episode “Felix” the original Adrien(Felix) was created as Adrien's cousin, which is why they look identical.
Nya, wow. Usually the pilot looks slightly worse than the rest of the series but this must be the first time i've seen the opposite. If 2D had stuck around I'm pretty sure I'd be a fan of the show right now.

This is an awesome video! The one thing I really would’ve appreciated is a short comparison for each show between the style of the pilot and the final product. I watched most of these, but don’t remember how they looked exactly. The Kirby show in particular-you mention that the final had 3D animation as well as 2D, but I didn’t remember that and had to go looking for it in another video. Again, awesome work. Super informative and incredibly nostalgic

The crash bandicoot pilot was actually early cutscenes from the first game. Sony rejected It because they were pushing the playstation 3D capabilities.

The Full House Pilot with John Posey playing Danny Tanner messed me up as a kid.
It's fun looking back at concept art for shows.
I think it teaches creators a very important message: That not all initial ideas are a final product. You start with the roughs, and work your way to refine it. An idea might not work out now, but if you keep moving forward to develop it, you can create something extraordinary. :)

Edit edit: I usually don't make this many edits on my comments. Yeesh. Anywho, I'm actually in posession of a lost pilot! If anyone remembers The Imagination Movers, my family somehow came into posession of the pilot only a few years before the series aired. I'll try my hardest to find it when I can to preserve it. My sisters and I watched that pilot constantly after they stopped airing the show and it wasn't on any streaming services, so I had no idea it was even lost until about a month ago! I hope I can find it again, because I'd love to share that lost bit of my childhood :)

bean sama hahah yeah I had a bunch of secondhand VHS tapes at my grannies house that she bought from a rummage/thrift shop and they were all like off-brand fairytale generic Disney-ish cartoons and a lot of them were from DIC entertainment and it always had the same weird ass intro/outro of some high ass voice saying “DIC!” loud and high-pitched hahaha. Major nostalgia

I love how different pilots are compared what a series becomes, because they show what ideas they could’ve used.
its always nteresting to think how different a show and its characters/story would be if certain or al things from its pilots remianed as is.

Hi, a Thomas fan here
There are 3 different Thomas pilots/pitches made about adapting the well known book series "The railway series", written by Wilbert Awdry.
The first was in 1953, when the BBC wanted to make an adaptation of The Sad Story of Henry, one of the first Thomas stories made. This pilot was a complete flop, as at the time television was in it's earliest stages and was live, instead of being aired. So during the premier of the story an error happened when a train fell off the tracks and a hand was seen picking it up, whilst being live. only in newspapers are there proof and evidence of this occurrence.
The animated Thomas the tank engine was pitched to Awdry in 1976 from Andrew Lloyd Webber about adapting his creation into a musical styled, cartoon animated series, much like Ivor the tank engine. This pilot was never even made because Awdry feared it wouldn't work, just like the previous fail. Only concept art of it is available.
The last, and most famous one is the 1983 pitch made by Britt Allcroft. She had read these books and was fascinated by how charming and incredible these characters and stories were, and wanted to adapt it. At first Awdry declined the offer, but let her make a pilot after much convincing. This pilot was made using a limited budget, models were more simplistic and custom made, very hard to handle as original crew members said. Made using live action models filmed on set, it was easier to make and better quality than the first two attempts. This pilot was a success, and led to a brand new series called "Thomas the tank engine and friends" to be made. This pilot was an adaptation of the story named "Down the mine", from the book "Gordon the big engine". The pilot had been lost media but however, small shots of it have been reused in the final version of the episode in season 1 of Thomas. It is presumably owned by either the show's director, David Mitton, who has sadly passed, or perhaps owned in the Mattel archive, the company that now owns Thomas. Speculation on if this pilot will be released is currently unknown, but who knows, maybe we will see it in it's full glory, maybe for the 80th anniversary of the franchise.

I like Tak and a power of jujus pilot. They used Taks model from the staff of dreams video game. Even him weilding the staff of dreams before they finalized it with him having is own staff that used to belong to his mom who was a juju. Jeera and keeko also looked completely different in the pilot compared to the finalized version. And I found story boards where the intro song was extended to probably twice as long and it seemed more of like a stage performance
