  • It’s a Romantic idea to have Animals do the work of the farm. And, it DOES work, BUT. And, that’s a BIG ol’ “but”. But, it’s a lot of WORK! Here’s me setting up system where the Cows can help me clear forest so we can get more production (without buying more land). Click “SHOW MORE” for resources.

Seeing how hard you work makes me realize how fortunate it is that my uncles put up permanent wire fencing around 8 really large pastures, each with a good water source. All we need to do now is move the cattle to a new pasture every couple of weeks. Their hard work in the 80s has made life so much easier ever since.

I’ve been watching your videos for months now. Your channel is my #1 favorite! My daughter is a Wwoofer and it’s help put my mind at ease to watch these shows and feel a part of her travels. We are a family with celiacs and multiple food allergies and gut issues. We embrace this culture. I’m a former farm girl gone city. Thank you for the daily adventures and the Hope I feel when watching you and other permaculture tubers.

I love Johah's attitude. After putting in a long day - even longer than usual - he's still willing to go . "You wanna do it?" The most successful crop you are growing there is a crop of great, hard-working chiddlers.

I am continually impressed by your children, those boys know exactly what to do, and they even ask about staying out later and working. Sounds like us when we were kids, a lot of kids nowadays don't want to work at all. I'm sure impressed with those pigs, I could sure fit a carport in my yard. Thanks for sharing the video with us,
    Jimmy

Grazing with the cows first is a great idea! I have thought about putting some goats with my pigs for the same reason. The goats can hit it high while the pigs hit it low.

I hope you asked the power company for the old pole- They replaced 12 poles near us and I asked if I could have them and they dropped them off for me. We've used them for the grape vines. Didn't have to buy any wood and we still have a lot left.

Bc of all that land clearing and the abundance of cut trees and branches, will you be investing in a wood chipper? I know the city leaves you chipped wood too but maybe you can never have too much on your homestead.

I would be VERY careful grazing the cows in poison ivy. If they get the oils from the plant on their coats or udders, it can be transferred to your hands or even the stanchion. And then, onto whatever you touch... This is from the Mayo Clinic website: "If the contaminated object isn't cleaned, the urushiol [the oil from the poison ivy that causes rashes] on it can still cause a skin reaction years later."
