Dear Canners, We don't Can. For one you loose a lot of nutrients that way and we don't have the time, as we have soooo much other fresh food to manage. In the future we will most definitely store fresh carrots in our cool room (going to build this next week). In a cool room carrots will easily store for 6 months. Since we plan on growing carrots twice a year (spring and fall) this will work out splendidly. No offense to my beloved Canner folk (it's a great thing you're doing). It's just not our "jam" and that's OK. Love, Uncle Justin.
In salt lake county there is a garden share program that has various pick up locations around the valley that will collect donated excess backyard produce then distribute it to shelters, pantries & senior lunch programs & non-profit organizations in need. Really good way to keep backyard produce from going to waste! 🌽
I agree, just make a decision any decision even if it's wrong. A farmer in my area once told me when the weeds start to sprout turn the rake upside down and walk up and down over them with the rake. It disturbs the weeds which amazingly died quite quickly. Not all of them but most of them without disturbing the soil a lot.
Thank you Justin, I was feeling overwhelmed with so much to do and not knowing where to start. Just watching your video gave me the encouragement just to start and ‘do something, even if it’s wrong’ 😊👍💕
Lots of carrots Justine and Rebecca. Juicing is a good option to use your carrots but you can also cut up into pieces and put them in a zip lock freezer bag and freeze them. Your choice to share them with a food bank is very generous and kind.
Bless your hearts! Wish I lived closer, I'd come help. Thanks for being transparent in your struggle. I loved seeing those little boots on the other side of the bucket when you were milking. ♥️ The community you got going on in NC!
Its a learn in progress, dont worry about the work u did yesterday u spent time as a family, work done together is the best time. U harvested hundreds of pounds of produce. Great job and god bless u guys
Super awesome to see your community helping out and the authenticity of trudging through and celebrating the harvest (even if exhausted at the thought of seeing another carrot!)
Now that's a mess of carrots. Since you like to juice, you can juice some and freeze the juice, either in ice trays or one cup containers for your smoothies.
Pickled carrots , soup & puree carrots , storage carrots, animal treat carrots , gift carrots, boiled, fried, and baked carrots LoL Boy oh Boy do you have carrots. :)
That's awesome!! You all are truly a inspiration. Our family of 6 are starting our fall crops today. The tarping is a great idea! So while our seeds our starting it will give us a couple weeks to tarp off our garden area.
Now that was a bunch of carrots!🥕 When you plant next year's garden, you definitely know which area of the garden is the best place to sow carrot seed! You might even have some volunteer carrots to still come up before winter. Wonder if you could juice a lot of them and freeze the juice? Maybe pour the juice in ice cube trays, bag the frozen cubes to use in smoothies later. It sure was nice that the Hollar family was available to help!❤
Reminds me when I was a teenager my parents friends had a farm. We picked strawberries and bagged cabbage for Franksville Kraut factory for days. It's a good memory and so it will be for your kids. Good job!
I don''t know how you feel about shopping at Walmart (some people won't) but I did a little online research and there is a flame weeder listed for $35.52 (small propane tank not included), free pick up at store location if I am not mistaken. The catalog lists it as a "Garden Torch". I'm sure they can be found at Lowe's or online at any hardware store catalog site but are probably a bit more expensive elsewhere. Threre is a warning about lead exposure so I am assuming it has a lead paint covering on it's stem. One would probably not use it without wearing work gloves, anyway. Just thought you might like to know for future reference.
Thanks for the thought. We've decided to buckle down on the tarpage and start seed in a nursery. Hopefully we can ventilate the greenhouse a bit more and start them there.
Yep I stirred the seed bank up in my garden without tarping or flame weeding. Been fighting it all year and having the worst gardening season I e had yet
what a good day! And I can see, down the road a few years, Miss Lilly will have her own market stand on the edge of the property...and Mr. Brown will be her assistant!
I use shadecloth in my greenhouse and even on 90 degee days it is cooler in there than without it. Just a thought and good luck in all you do. Thanks for sharing your journey daily.
So what exactly do the tarps do for you? For the bees, try to get a smoker (for bees) and that will calm them down. Try getting a beehive and see if you can get them to relocate to your hive. Check out Leo Sharashkin he does a lot of natural bee keeping.
Nope, but found after years of deep mulch gardening, it wasn't going to work in this climate (up to 80" of rain a year) and it wasn't going to work for us. It's also not something I can teach as MOST people can't actually get loads of carbon material for free. We're working towards a system that is more replicable for others. Oh, and our gardens have never EVER looked so good.
Great question. We're going to do this in a cool room (walk in fridge basically). Gonna build one next week with Jason. They'll last up up 8 months that way :)

Back in the old country, Romania that is, we stored carrots in big boxes with sand...
You guys are so generous donating to a food bank. God bless you all.
What a wonderful example of teamwork and perseverance.
Yay! Ben and Meg! I love the way y’all help each other!
love Mr. Brown. He just don't give a rats furry butt sometimes!! lmao
Good for donating and giving away the extra carrots!

Extra fresh food is a nice problem, love the sharing of your bounty. 👏👏👏

You totally get it :)

Wow that was a cool surprise ❤ Meg and Ben❤ love seeing you all together. Awesome crop❤
the ending was the best. I feel the same way sometimes MR. brown lol
Mr Brown making hay angles. He is adorable and will sleep well that night.
Sand storage. Store root veg in cool, dark place in sand.
Love the Hollars.🐰🐰🐰Where's the rabbits when you need'm ?
What an exhausting but fulfilled day you enjoyed with another family to help and share. You all are rock stars!

I feel the love.

Hey Hollars! 🤗👋❤❤❤❤whoa, now that is a lot of carrots 🥕🥕🥕🥕🥕🥕🥕🥕🥕🥕🥕🥕🥕🥕🥕🥕🥕🥕🥕🥕🥕🥕🥕🥕🥕🥕🥕🥕🥕🥕
Thank you for sharing this! With social media sometimes you think you the only one making mistakes
Yah! I appreciate this. Makes showing mistake worth while.
Yay! Friends together turning overwheming mountain into harvest. Bravo Hollars & Rhodes!!!
i feel your frustration. Some days are just that way but at least you know now and wont repeat the same mistakes in the future.
I see pressure canning in your future. Love seeing y’all with the Hollars.
The gardens look incredible even with a small row harvested :)
That drone shot of Laurel walking over the empty bed was very satisfying.
Nice work Rhodes and Hollar families
Glad you noticed that.

Make some carrot powder for smoothies or add it when juicing.
Thank you all for the efforts you put forth in making these vids and the homesteading you do. Gives me hope for my feeble efforts. You all rock!
Thank you. I feel the deep appreciation.

Pickled carrots are pretty good, and so are frozen carrots but canned carrot juice is the best!!!! Think -- you could have made a V8!

Good to know we made the right decision.
what a good day! And I can see, down the road a few years, Miss Lilly will have her own market stand on the edge of the property...and Mr. Brown will be her assistant!
Mr Brown was tired 😓 lol!!! 👍👍👍😎

This is a possibility, but it's one more thing to buy.

Block the sun, encourage worm activity and kill the weeds.
You guys did great! Keep Going!
Oh man SO many carrots! Will you can some? Juice them and can the juice? Awesome harvest, great team work!
In the future we will store them in a cool room (going up next week) and grow carrots twice a year. Carrots will keep for 6 months this way.
Yum yum... carrots 😊
Really enjoyed the video
Hafa Adai from Guam!!
If Gideon ever made his way back to Hawaii, or any Pasifik Island, he would find his forever home there...lol
Love this.
Nice haul you should try to can them that’s what I would do with them
🙏Happy family👏👏👏👌👍👍🙌💖💐🙏😂
The Hollars! :D (y) w00t!
What would happen if you fence that area and put chickens in there. they like to eat seeds.
Perhaps. But didn't have the time.
Liking the video before watching really isn't wrong.. I'm sure, go ahead, do it!!😏
Y'all are in carrot heaven!!🥕🥕🥕 Poor Gideon in the end.. He's DONE😴
Did you forget about Ruth Stout?

That was a buttload of carrots. Bright eyes. Joy Giles
So what was the total poundage of this haul. Yesterday was a great amount.
150+ pounds.
How can you store carrots for a long time?
Great question. We're going to do this in a cool room (walk in fridge basically). Gonna build one next week with Jason. They'll last up up 8 months that way :)
So. Many. Carrots.
Make carrot powder
Mr Brown is pooped😝
