Wade Wilson's Last Playoff Win (1988 Wildcard) Rams vs. Vikings Classic Highlights

- I figured it was fitting to make a highlight video of a Wade Wilson game, since he tragically passed away recently at the age of 60. Here is the last playoff game he ever won, a WIld Card game against the LA Rams. His final two playoff starts would be blowout losses to Montana's 49ers at Candlestick Park in '88 and '89.

He was a very good quarterback just never got his break, rest in peace Wade God bless you.
Wade Wilson was actually an excellent quarterback very smart, on any other team he would have been a starter and the go-to man, rest in peace Mr Wilson.
First , I love that Pete Holihan was the Rams' holder. Second, what a game by Browner. Third, how did we ever watch football without the score on the screen?
Sure miss that, when you weren't distracted by "Fox boxes" or those annoying tickers on the bottom of the screen.
Funky I was 19 when this game was played. You're making a now 50 year old Viking fan feel like he's young again. 😃 Thank you! I'm grateful for everything you do. Keep it up.
Thanks for the kind words, Keith! Seeing comments like yours make this worth doing!
One of the greatest Viking games I ever watched was on December 14, 1980 against the Cleveland Browns. It was the "Miracle at The Met" game where Tommy Kramer launched a Hail Mary that was pulled in by Ahmad Raschad and sent the Vikings to the playoffs. I believe Kramer had over 450 yards passing on that day too. Do you have the ability to highlight THAT game? Thanks in advance
Wade was solid.
RIP wade wilson!! Great game by wade took some sacks but made some huge plays..
Wow I had no clue he died.
I always loved that Slant play to Anthony Carter-- smoothest receiver I've ever seen.
R.I.P. "Whiskey" Wade Wilson
"McDaniel, the rookie" -- weird to hear that instead of "McDaniel, the pro-bowler"
This was the last time an NFL playoff game was played on a weekday (Monday) until the 2021 postseason which involves the Rams again (they are the only franchise in NFL history to be involved in all five weekday playoff games: 1955, 1977, 1983, 1988 and 2021).
This was not too long after the 87 World Series so the fans were crazy. Thanks so much for putting together these highlight reels, you really do such a great job highlighting the best stuff. I remember Rick Fenney came to our elementary school around this time, he was a good dude
Thanks so much! I love your channel and catch every vid you post!
Joey browner was a beast!!!!!!
Hey Vikings! Bring back those nice uniforms!
Sir Fran is the best in team history, however 1987 was my favorite season for a variety of reasons. The successful playoff run was in large part due to his tremendous play. I was fortunate enough to get his autograph. RIP Wade.
I remember all of that. And 1987 was amazing. Even with the strike, and then BS 8-7 record, we still nearly got the SB. Amazing season. That Thanksgiving game vs Dallas is still one of my top 10 games ever.
R.I.P Wade Wilson
The first Vikings game I ever went to
rogerskolney nice
Even though the Vikings won this game easily, the Rams defense was still able to put pressure all day on Minnesota Quarterback Wade Wilson. I counted a total of 5 sacks in this video by the Rams defense, including 3 by Kevin Greene alone. He was one heck of a linebacker.
Joey Browner and AC really stood out in this one!
Those two always showed up in the playoffs!
My 49ers would get their revenge from the '87 playoff game the next week in 34-9 on their way to winning Super Bowl 23 over the Bengals.
Awesome game!
Thank you for your efforts.
I was at that game and remember Browner’s first pick. Was sitting at that end zone. You knew the Rams we’re doomed right there and then.
I remember Madden saying it was a bad call on the block in the back penalty on the Hicks punt return. If that replay was available, it would be interesting to see.
Browner's No 47 was in almost every defensive play for the Vikings. Nobody played strong safety better in my opinion.
He'd probably be in the HOF if he had played for a large market team.
He was amazing. Barry Sanders mentioned after retirement he was the very hard to juke and his hands were so strong if he grabbed you it was over. If you ever wanted to see a horse collar tackle and why they should be illegal that time he caught Sammy Winder on the goal line will do. Perfectly legal at the time. Broke his leg by pulling him backwards.
WW RIP 🙏 BROTHER
I’ll never understand how the Viking’s teams in the late 80’s and early 90’s didn’t at least win a Conference Championship. They were absolutely loaded with talent on both sides of the ball.
In '87 the strike didn't help, the replacement players went 0-3 which hurt MN in the playoff bracket. In '88 the loss in Green Bay cost them the division and home field advantage. The '88 Vikings were a better team than the '87 version. But sometimes it only takes one loss to change everything.
If that assemblage of talent was on another NFL franchise, it could have done better. The queens are cursed for eternity because Bud Grant was so smug when they got those underserved Super Bowl berths in the seventies.
@@OBESPRING1982 the Vikings need to redesign their helmet logo. Point the helmet logo with the horn sharp tip toward their opponents instead of backward.
@@OBESPRING1982 he's actually one of the kindest , humble men I've ever met. Stoic maybe, but far from smug.
@@CoreyBetland79 He may have made a good impression on you when you met but, in the aftermath of a horrendously officiated 2nd half of the 1969 NFL Western Conference Championship game, when asked about said officiating, he replied, "I though the officiating was fine, wouldn't change a thing" And furthermore, I've read an archived Sports Illustrated article on Mr. Grant that was conducted in that era and he refers to Hank Stram, whose KC Chiefs humbled the purple gang a few weeks after the RAMS were cheated and, apparently in reference to the three flanker reverses that KC ran in Super Bowl IV, each of which went for substantial yardage, says something to the affect that Stram would rather trick you than beat you straight up. So, what was Grant doing in the 1974 NFC Championship Game when the queens would have 15 men in their defensive huddle against LA? Smug and a hypocrite to boot.
This was the last time to date that an NFL playoff game was played on a weekday.
And it snowing like crazy in MPLS that day.
On a Monday until 2022
Yeah I guess it was because they didn't want to play on Christmas Eve or was it the weather?
QB's were freaking tough back then!
The postseason domination of the Rams in Minny: a tradition unlike any other.
Very good Offensive Line. Two Hall of Fame players and the others were highly regarded.
When in doubt, always throw it deep to A.C. because usually means TD.
A rare Monday Afternoon game. Back then, the nfl didn't like playing on Christmas day. The afc wild card was on Saturday December 24 and the nfc wild card was on Monday December 26
Interesting. Didn't remember that
Looks like a Joey Browner and Kevin Greene highlight video!
This was also the last playoff game on a Monday until the 2021 season
Joey Browner had a helluva game
What a classic game ❤
Anthony Carter should have done down as one of the top 5 all time.
Seeing Kevin Greene sack Wade Wilson was sad and erie.....R.I.P. to both!
1988 the year I became a viking fan for life!
I was at his game. Drove through the blizzard from Fargo to attend.
And after football he became Deadpool
Listen to that crowd! What a game this was.
I don’t remember too much of this game because I was 7 at the time. But I do remember some of these players. Anthony Carter was one of my favorites growing up. Steve Jordan, and Randell McDaniel. I even seen Rich Gannon on the sidelines. People talk about the o line these days. But it looked like Wade Wilson had to scramble around quit a bit. Maybe just the way the game went. Fun to watch older memories.
Well there was virtually no pressure at all from the left side where Zimmerman and McDaniel had things on lockdown. Kevin Geene vs Irwin was obviously a tough mathup. And blitzes and stunts up the middle. Right guard #66 for the Vikes looked pretty bad. And not sure why Wade Wilson was dropping back absurdly deep and not stepping up in the pocket? That makes it easier for the outside rushers.
Last NFL Playoff Game To Be Played On A Weekday For Another 33 Years (2021-22)
Wilson would later be Everett's back up in New Orleans in 1994.
Rest in Paradise to Wade Wilson but my 49ers got my revenge on the Vikings next week in SF 34-9 on their way to winning Super Bowl 23 over Cincinnati. To get theur 3rd Title of the '80s decade.
After Dennis Green released Wade in '92, he spent a season in Atlanta before going to NO. Wade actually started for the Saints against the Vikings in '93 and beat them. Side note: in '92 Wade arrived in Atlanta very shortly after Jerry Glanville traded a certain 'gunslinger' to the Green Bay Packers.
Watching this just after the game against Washington. This team was better than the one we have this year, despite our current record. They had good receivers, great tight end, future HOF'er in Randall McDaniel, and loaded on D. And I'd take Wilson over Cousins any day.
Gotta' Love Gary Anderson, huh?
Darin Nelson with the .... drop
Steve Jordan #83 vikings great tight end. His son is cam Jordan new Orleans saints d lineman.
OLD MAN WILLIE!
Imagine our offense today with that defense !!!!
There are many ways you can win a game..
Wade Wilson outclassed Chris Everett in this playoff showdown
i was at this game.
didn't know deadpool could ball out like that
The 88 vikings were swept by the 4-12 packers. A 34-14 loss at home and an 18-6 loss at Lambeau.
Hey, don't worry about the Giants winning 41-0. What matters is Randy Moss gettin' his posse on the field before the game. You gotta' have your priorities in order. Just play when you wanna play. And on that day, Moss got MOSSED!
You mean the vikings playcalls got MOSSED as the Giants intercepted each one as it was 📻 in to the QB?
Still more post season wins by Wilson than Cousins
Wade Wilson is a guy i remember for 2 things: beating the 49ers, and getting busted for giving PEDs to his players as the Cowboys QB coach and was weirdly punished for this in the same announcement as the Spygate punishment
Hated in his own locker room? I've never heard that about him.
66limelight honestly I can’t remember what I was thinking of when I wrote that, RIP
The ultimate Dream Team for the Vikings if there ever was one - Case Keenum as QB, then Robert Smith and Michael Bennett as RBs, Jim Kleinsasser as FB, Kyle Rudolph as TE, and finally Anthony Carter, Adam Thielen, Randy Moss and Stefan Diggs as the WRs. How cool is that?
michael bennet? over adrian peterson?
Case Keenum? I'd take Joe Kapp over Case Keenum. And Randall Cunningham. And Brett Favre. And Fran Tarkenton. And Warren Moon. Hell, even Jim McMahon.
What about Ted Brown and Sammy white .Tommy Krammer as well
CAN YOU NOT POST THE FULL GAME PLEASE AND THANKS .
Fran Tarkenton has the lowest SB passer rating of any one who has enough attempts to qualify.
As a chi fan I gotta say mn the div rival I disliked the most back then, hard to beat em in the dome but certainly not impossible, they really were a bunch of paper tigers
Having an elite running back was the missing ingredient. But we took care of that the next season.
DICK TRICKLE Herschel Walker? No that’s actually so laughable. 3 seasons, no playoff wins, not even a thous yd season ha ha lol what a bunch of pretenders
How was this playoff game on Monday?
Christmas was a Sunday that year.
5:20. of course...
Wade Wilson was okay, but just think about the Vikings in that era with a top-shelf quarterback. An elite quarterback throwing to AC and Steve Jordan, combined with that defense? Fuhgitaboudit.
The Minnesota Vikings are slightly more accomplished at their sport than the Atlanta Hawks are at theirs.
Gary Anderson don't miss. HEE HEE
Wasn't Jerry Burns an alcoholic. I seem to recall Tommy Kramer was.
Jerry liked his drinks, but never had any alcohol related problems. Kramer on the other hand, by this point had about 2 DUIs, was put in treatment at least once. I remember a local radio show in MPLS called him up on a Friday morning to discuss an upcoming game that Sunday. And Kramer was blitzed to the gills! The show ended up cutting short the teleconference!
Why do we have night and Saturday night games for wildcard games now? It’s so dumb
These were the days i was really into pro football and the vikes. Now with all the stupid rules, horrible officiating, crybaby players, race bating players, and kneelers, not so much
I agree
SIXTY-FIVE TOSS POWER TRAP! HEE HEE! WHOO HOO! SIXTY-FIVE TOSS POWER TRAP. ATTA BABY! SIXTY-FIVE TOSS POWER TRAP!
65 Toss Power Trap, Mike Garrett for the TD, Bud Grant with the ofer.
who the F is Al Baker ?
The queens BLOW
Football was better back years ago
I remember this '88 NFC Wild Card game.
My 49ers would get their revenge on Minnesota 34-9 in the NFC Divisional game for that '87 fluke win.
Watched this game with my girlfriend. 😉
