yup, I remember it vividly because that was also the peak of my involvement in track personally. I thought the times would just keep going down... had no idea how good we had it.
I once saw him literally jog a 10.00 in a prelim and never understood how he couldn't put it together in the finals. He should have easily been running 9.6's.
Banger video 🔥🔥. Growing up in Jamaica in the 2000's Asafa wasnt labeled as a choker until 2012 Olympics, before that our delusional narrative was that he didnt care about Jamaica and only cared to run fast in "money races".
Your delivery is amazing! You paid tribute while dishing out the hard painful truths of this legend Asafa Powell. I am just glad that he will almost always be universally agreed as the best mechanical sprinter. Thanks for this video!
Thank you, I'm super glad you enjoyed it. I put a lot of thought and deliberation into every second to convey my respect for Powell while still being able to critique his downfalls. So I'm honestly really happy it turned out well and to find out people enjoyed it :)
@@JumpmanTF You do exceptional work in this space. Your production value is up to par and your commentary is your absolute secret weapon! Keep bringing it! It is about time you are super thanked for every post!
A world record is a bigger deal than an Olympic Gold, IMO, since it represents the best ever, not just the best over a relatively short stretch of time necessary to qualify and perform well for a few races.
Bros just didn’t know how to rest. He wanted the big medals so bad that he overworked himself before the big moments. I use to do this with basketball. I would consistently overwork myself, even with injuries sometimes… but when I just rested a bit longer and let my gains solidify I’d play my best games. Supermen have to recover just as hard as they work 🤷🏽♂️ bro also needed more hamstring flexibility.
Other channels on hold more so because of an ankle injury that's kept me down for a few months. But this channel does get ALL the love now haha. Appreciate the compliment.
Anyone who's sprinted knows that tension is your biggest enemy. If the mind is straining, the body has no chance. Producing your best under pressure, isn't the same as trying harder or wanting it more. Similarly, being afraid to lose and disappoint doesn't isn't conducive to carefree sprinting. You can't have a truly powerful body, without a mind powerful enough to rise above your circumstances. Weird, because he seemed such a chilled guy! If the goal is executing your race, you can always win on your own terms. Difficult to do when the stakes are so high though. Still, lovely to watch his technique, and he can still be proud of 3 relay golds. He could deliver for his team. He can also surely support the next generation.
One of the all time greats, despite everything. I hope Kishane Thompson doesn’t end up like him although he’s already done better (Olympic Silver!) in terms of medals. If Kishane doesn’t tense up he will win every single race. However if he DOES tense up, like he did in Paris, then he, might lose as there’s 9 or 10 other guys who - on their day - can be very competitive with him and everyone else.
I want to Paris down due to simply a unusually long wait before the race which might have caused him to be nervous as well as Kerley fast times Good to see him run some 60s this year though
Asafa is definitely one of the greatest sprinters ever, he just does not have the medals. This guy was breaking world records and shutting down. A phenomenal Sprinter, sub 10 king for a reason!!
Powell was my favorite ever since 2005. I really liked Bolt, but I didn't switch teams all of the sudden when he broke through (in the 100m) in 2008. That would've been really sellouty of me. Powell was an incredible starter, a great performer (whenever there wasn't pressure) And the sub-10 king (97(!) times). And seemed like a great guy as well. edit: A big shame that Powell didn't get to compete in the 2005 world championships (due to injury) He held the three fastest times that year: 9.77, 9.84 and 9.85 (in terrible, rainy, cold conditions). Gatlin won the WC gold in 9.88 ahead of Frater and Collins (both in 10.05)
@ “the emplemon music tracks” That LITERALLY means he owns them. Which he does not. “John lennons songs” is the same sentence slightly reworded. See the issue?
@ it appears what I meant does not match what was received. I see what you mean. I worded it that way because he uses the same few songs in all of his videos, becoming so recognizable that I had the reaction of, “oh yeah it’s the emplemon soundtrack” in a jumpman video even though yeah he doesn’t own jack squat
Like i said in a previous while ago. Asafa was born in the wrong era of sprinting. Same reason as to why i say Noah Lyles will never break Bolts record because theres really no one in his Era to really embarrass him so bad that he is forced to hit a new gear of speed.
He failed a drugs test at Jamaican champs, along with other top athletes. First time they'd tested at champs in a decade so assumed he'd get away with it. To my mind, any records he got are tainted
And after Jamaican national championships, Asafa Powell and Sherone Simpson went to Italy where their hotel rooms and those of their physics coach were raided by the police. The substances found there were never made public.

my coping brain wants to say that in 2015 since powell was kinda old his recovery times were longer so he couldn't manage to run fast in the semi and the final
I would greatly appreciate if you can analyze and explain how's it possible that a 21 year old who showboated onto the world stage with an amazing 9.69 in 2008 and then utterly obliterated that record a year later with an astounding 9.58, somehow only ever managed to achieve just one more sub 9.7 clocking about 3 years later⁉️If even 9.58 was truly his peak at still such a relatively young age, the pressing question remains as to why he only managed 3 sub 9.7s during his entire career ‼️IT JUST SIMPLY DOES NOT MAKE ANY SORT OF SENSE WHATSOEVER ‼️🫤
But that's the broblem tho. His mental wasn't there during world championships events at the most important times of the year. That is why, Usain bolt is the Goat of Sprinting for me 🗣👌🏾!
Asafa Powell is one of the greatest sprinters in Jamaican history. Usain ultimately won medals at the highest levels due to his ungodly talent along with superb coaching from Glenn Mills and others who understood his psyche and how best to motivate him. Asafa was a more naturally gifted talent than Usain, his form and perfect execution of all phases of a race made him almost unbeatable. But Asafa’s biggest competition in major events lived between his ears, and caused him to not perform at his best when it mattered most. This is where some psychological and behavioral support would helped him to achieve his full potential. This deficiency ultimately lies at the feet of the JAAAs and other relevant sporting agencies who are tasked with supporting the athlete - it does NOT lay with Asafa. Should we be using Asafa’s unstinting honesty against him? We all have faults, deficiencies, fears and failure. Unlike with Asafa - the man from Linstead, these typically aren’t displayed in real time for all the world to see - and criticize, and mock. Asafa Powell’s record as an athlete and the times he produced as a sprinter are still superior to most countries competing in the sport. How many of them wished they had produced anyone as great as him. No way is he is failure. No way should he be described as anything but a great sprinter, one of the very best. He is however not “the greatest”… but how many people in any field can claim that title?
I may be wrong but the tone of this video has a mockingly disrespectful edge which no true fan of the sport would lay at the feet of one of its legends. Where's the empathy?

You could have mentioned the fact that Powell held 5 of fastest times in history at the end of the 2007 season. Crazy
Powell has 97(!) sub 10.00-performances and 8 sub-9.80 performances. An absolute legend.
Sub-10.00 performances: Powell: 97, Gatlin: 64, Bolt: 52, Blake: 46, Gay: 36
Sub-9.90 performances: Powell: 43, Bolt: 35, Gatlin: 26, Gay: 18 Blake: 11
Sub-9.80 performances: Bolt: 12, Powell: 8, Gay: 7, Gatlin: 7, Blake: 4
Sub-9.70 performances: Bolt: 3, Blake: 1, Gay: 1
Sub-9.60 performances: Bolt: 1
Man, this is sad
Powell on his game is sprinting perfection.
His 4x100 finish leg was amazing as well
A powerful reminder of the importance of mindset and keeping the focus on what is in your control
I once saw him literally jog a 10.00 in a prelim and never understood how he couldn't put it together in the finals. He should have easily been running 9.6's.
In 2016, after not having a single Olympic medal due to relay members doping, he finally got one with an Olympic gold in the 4x100m relay
Sprinting/the 100m was so much better in 2005-2016 than compared to nowadays.
