Lyrics:
Walking down Madison
I swear I never had a gun
No I never shot no one
I was only having fun
Walking down Madison
Swear I never had a gun
I was philosophising some
Checking out the bums
See you give 'em your nickels
Your pennies and dimes
But you can't give 'em hope
In these mercenary times, oh no
And you feel real guilty about the coat on your back
And the sandwich you had, oh no
From an uptown apartment
To a knife on the A train
It's not that far
From the sharks in the penthouse
To the rats in the basement
It's not that far
To the bag lady frozen asleep in the park
Oh no, it's not that far
Would you like to see some more?
I can show you if you'd like to
Walking down Madison
I swear I never had a gun
No I never shot no one
Wouldn't do it just for fun
Walking down Madison
Trying to keep my head screwed on
I was philosophising some
Checking out the nuns
When you get to the corner
Don't look at those freaks
Keep your head down low
And stay quick on your feet, oh yeah
The beaming boy from Harlem
With the airforce coat
The ones who died, the ones who tried
The ones that sit and gloat
From an uptown apartment
To a knife on the A train
It's not that far
From the sharks in the penthouse
To the rats in the basement
It's not that far
To the bag lady frozen asleep
On the church steps
It's not that far
Would you like to see some more?
I can show you if you'd like to
Within every city and town there's a Madison
Frozen lives for whom nothing's happening
Hungry children is a mother's dilemma
Dumpster diving to feed her baby Emma
So you walk on by like it doesn't affect you
The held out hand that you pay no respect to
Nickels and dimes won't even buy your guilt
Another wino dead, burnt to death in his quilt
It's a cardboard city, newspaper metropolis
The system can't cope or keep on top of this
The authorities come as you're not for display
Do they solve the problem, no, they move him away
They're in a vicious circle of no fixed abode
The social won't pay 'em the money they're owed
When you've got no money you can't pay rent
Hypothermia kills 'cause the system is bent
From an uptown apartment
To a knife on the A train
It's not that far
From the sharks in the penthouse
To the rats in the basement
It's not that far
To the bag lady frozen asleep in the park
Oh no, it's not that far
Hey bro, you wanna see some more?
I can show you if you'd like to
From an uptown apartment
To a knife on the A train
It's not that far
From the sharks in the penthouse
To the rats in the basement
It's not that far
To the bag lady frozen asleep
On the church steps
It's not that far
In the early 90s I remember cranking this up in my VW bus with speakers I mounted to a piece of wood under a bench seat in the back. Fast forward to 2024 and it's still one of my all time favorite songs! Thank you Kirsty, Johhnny, et al. ❤
So special. It’s not that far. RIP Kirsty. Gone too soon.
If California/San Francisco had only listened 😢
Kirsty with her Manchester supergroup backing her on this - Johnny Marr on guitar , Jimmy Goodwin ( Doves) , Donald Johnson - A Certain Ratio - Drums and rapping by Aniff Akinola - Chapter& The Verse, Backyard Dog etc. Brilliant combo ( her dad Ewan was from Salford so maybe she wanted that dirty vibe)
I have loved this song since I first heard it 32 years ago. I just listened to it as I was "Walking Down Madison" for the first time in my life and it made me cry.
RIP Kirsty, Croydon's finest. ❤
Heroes are not born. They are made in the moment, and Kirsty was among the bravest of those.
Godspeed for a remarkable human being.
I love this song. Never thought I’d get to see an HD video for it.
Good memories. RIP Kristy. You are not forgotten. ❤️
There's something about this song that just hooks me in every time. Kirsty had such a beautiful voice.
Such a gem, she was. RIP Kirsty.💔
Great tune, big fan of her music, R.I.P.
Keep playing this over and over. Such a groove and the lyrics are so relevant to today.
New York in the early '90s was bananas. I miss this moment in music before grunge changed everything. This played on the college radio station in my town. Neat turn for Kirsty's voice.
Rest in heavenly peace ✌️ 🙏
Kirsty maccoll
1959 to 2000
Taken far, far, too soon
Very pretty and talented , so sorry to lose her so young .
I had totally forgotten about this tune til I recently picked up a Kirsty best of. So good.
Love you Kirsty ❤️
Great track.
Brilliant...my favourite Kirsty song...timeless
I have a cassette that I recorded in '90 from FM radio Aspen - Buenos Aires, but I didn't know the name of the song,
but now after 34 years I managed to identify him through Shazam and here I am watching his video for the first time.
Tengo un cassette que grabé en el año '90 de la radio FM Aspen - Buenos Aires, pero no sabía el nombre de la canción,
pero ahora luego de 34 años logré identificarlo a través de Shazam y aquí estoy viendo su video por primera vez.
❤❤❤
Much missed Talent... RIP Kirsty..xc
How this hasn't got more views I'll never know, hopefully it reaches 1 million one day.
The song is virtually unknown in the US.
This is SO 1990!!!!!!🤩🤩🤩
Kirsty looks absolutely beautiful in this video
A gorgeous woman 👩 😍
God only takes the very best 👌 👍
Rest in heavenly peace kirsty
Ar dheis de go raibh an anam dhillis
Recently heard this track on the radio program, “World Cafe.” It stuck in my head. Such a classic dance track with a poignant political, thinking man’s, through an Artist eyes, message. Such a hot track. Introduced me to Kristy, and I cried when I found out what happen to her. You have touched me and made me dance Kristy!
Loved watching this with my late bro. He loved the message from it. He thought it was re the difference s in society.
Greatness never dies 😎
This song was a part of my transition to my teenage years like so many between 1989 to 1992.
I totally relate to the same!
aw. so good. so pretty. so missed.
It just occurred to me watching this video that Kirsty MacColl looks a lot like Elizabeth Montgomery from Bewitched. She's beautiful and greatly missed.
Has every sound an early 90s sound engineer could put in a song....still a great tune.
Awesome track, one of her best, still sounds fresh!
Nothing has changed RIP Kirsty
I remember first watching this on a segment of kids tv show called Ghost Train back in 1991. I was only 7 years old at the time, great memories
love it classic rip kirsty i love you
Another genius Steve Lillywhite production. They were married at one point. Sad how her life ended and there was no accountability.
"From the sharks in the penthouse, to the rats in the basement.....it's not that far."
Believe me, I know.....
Johnny Marr should've been playing guitar in this clip because that's who we're listening to.
good one kirsty!
Brilliant song !!!!!!!! Relevant then and now. The rapping at the end is excellent, sums up things so well, without any gangsta BS.
If you've got a long way to go... remember this song" it's not that far "
Catchy. Chorus = "Shoplifters of the world unite" by The Smiths. Johnny Marr involved in this by any chance ?
Good call!! Close on the melody. Yes Johnny Marr has this melody written and has given it to Kirsty to pen the lyrics. This was produced by genius Steve Lillywhite, her husband at the time.
Some of the production is dated. But the gentle soul of Kirsty's vocals and the bite of Johnny Marr's guitar are both timeless.
Elliot Randall also is credited on guitar. (Steely Dan-Reelin in the years) Great track.
Grand Band
Heard it this week... Been in my head ever since. Probably didn't appreciate it first time around
Me Encanta este Trak Grande Kirsty.
I love this tune!!
So sad just google Kirsty and finding out that she pass away over 24 years ago, Just watch the video on 120 minutes. I like the song and the singer. I thought she was in Talking Heads...RIP Kirsty
Me too! Weird!
Just got 8 disc full retrospective does Kirsty proud
Check out the album
Written by the great Johnny Marr.
Esta canción tiene un sonido noventero increíblemente nostálgico... a pesar de no ser nostálgica, pero es una mini maquina del tiempo.
This song has an incredibly nostalgic 90s sound... even though it's not nostalgic, but it's a mini time machine.
I loved this song when I first heard it, and when it was released in 1991
I dont know what month in '91 it was released
If my memory serves me it was released in I'd say July or August '91 or maybe later on again in the year
Electric Landlady is the best album title ever.
Its a fine line between cringe and getting away with it with a song like this but she definitely gets away with it.
Coool!
_"From an up town apartment to a knife on the A-Train it's not that far._
I’m in the UK but how about the US version.
Please don't tell me they crapped it just to fly it over there?! Americans! Always having to change everything for them jerks. All for nothing anyway. They never change their own crap when they force it on us.
@@kyachdistent1301 somebody's triggered
@@shannonbluggenheimer5467 Well if they WILL do it. Someone has to say it!
@@kyachdistent1301this is exactly how I remember the US radio single that my program director tossed into the trash sounded. So glad I snagged that one.
😎🙏❤️
Who is guy in video?
I can show you if you'd like to.
@@hoibsh21 Good one ............
Would you like to see some more?
horrible music since i heard it for the first time
