I love visiting the old farmsites and communing with the ghosts. 55 years ago, growing up in farm country between Madison and Milwaukee, milking cows got me through high school and college. Then it was the dairy farms that made the most money. That lasted about 10 more years and cows disappeared as milk prices tanked. Sad to see all the empty silos in the countryside. They are monuments of a testament of profitability - now long gone. Ahh, the stories I've seen. The greatest missed opportunity is not talking more with my grandfather who worked the transition from horses to tractors. Keep the rain outta' the barn.
Thanks for commenting, yup, we got most of our income from our dairy cows as well. We gave them up in 95 as it just didn't make financial sense anymore. The first night we didn't milk was so strange and too quiet as our family milked in our "new" barn built in 37 everyday since it was new. It didn't take too long to get used to not milking though - ha ha !! Every farm on our mile milked, now we have only one that still does. We just put a new steel roof on the barn last year, so the upstairs still looks perfect! I appreciate your comments as it reflects my life!
