Are the rain sensors glued onto the windscreen or clipped in place? Mine is faulty. I have a replacement one but don't want to just start plulling at the old one and break something.
Would I be better off taking it to the local (very good) garage I usually go to and asking them to do it?

You are best to check with your dealer if you are doing it yourself search online for e for you Make and Model. if you go to a local shop, they will do the research to make sure they do it right. Last thing they want to do is create a liability situation where they mess up.

does tinting your front windshield affect this feature of automatic rain sensor?

In general the sensor, senses the rain on the windshield and since tint is put on the inside, most jobs will not take off the sensor and just tint around it.
