At 5700 miles, the windshield on my 2019 STI is cracked. I called Safelite Auto Glass to do a windshield replacement. I recorded the process and think you might find it interesting. It's a lot of work but this guy makes it look easy.
Before recording this footage, the tech from Safelite gave me his permission to record the windshield replacement process. I love my new Subaru WRX STI and make videos to document things about it so I appreciated the opportunity to record this video.
Many people have found this video before they called Safelite and thanked me for posting this detailed video which shows the onsite windshield replacement process.
It's a long video but you really get to see every part of the windshield replacement.
Thanks for watching and commenting!

Usually one gets nervous or uneasy when being watched. I know I do. But this guy done a great job. Had one replaced a couple years ago by same company. Done great👌 Nice car too btw.
He was nice enough to allow me to take video of the install. I'm glad this video has reached so many people to show what they can expect of a Safelite windshield replacement. I still have the Subaru WRX in this video and never had any problems with the windshield.
What was/is the recovery/ setting time ?
In other words, how soon can I go through the car wash ?! 😅
I wish every safelite technician performing the work like this guy does.
I am about to have this done this Saturday, I hope I get him..LOL!

Lol what are you talking about? This dude wouldn’t last at my shop. We do 3 an hour.
Just wanted to comment being from the same industry. Kudos to this technician for doing everything by the book. Great asset to that company and a great install.
Kudos to this guy for doing what he does. I’m 5’ I would struggle to reach even more on a truck.
They give us stools so the short guys can still do huge trucks
I had my windshield replaced today and wanted to watch so badly just to see the process but I had a meeting at the time he arrived so I ended up looking it up. Thanks for posting this, I was so curious!
I just had my windshield replaced three days ago. I was working from home. The Safelite technician arrived at noon; he was done at 12:35. I was like, if I would have known it would be that quick, I would have watched the process…which is why I’m here. The technician in the video showed his professionalism👍🏽
That's not good 35 minutes on the remove and replace. The skipped something to save time like this guy in the vid skipped a few steps.
@@punktalley What a load of b.s. Doing a proper 35 minute replacement is a snap. Inspect car, inspect glass, cover hood and seats, 5 minutes. Remove mirror, wiper and cowl, and unplug heating element takes less than 5 minutes. E.Z. wire old windshield out takes about 5 minutes. Prime glass, 10 seconds. Remove old urethane and activate bonding area, 2 to 3 minutes. Wait 3 minutes for chems to flash. Prep car for install while waiting. Tape on the car or the glass, and set up cups or 1-tech mounting system. New tube of polyurethane in the caulk gun. Those are easily done during the chemical flash time. Apply urethane and mount windshield in approximately 1 to 2 minutes. Reinstall components and reattach heating element. Approximately 3 minutes. Remove covers takes 30 seconds. Done. On a nice day, and working on a vehicle thats less than 5 years old q typical replacement takes 25 to 30 minutes. Add an additional 5 to 10 minutes for washing windows and vacuuming the car. Drive time is approximately 30 minutes after installation. If it takes longer than that, you need to explain to your customers that you are slow and cannot perform as well as most glass technicians.
@@MW-xv1sj if you say so. I know the results of most all 35 minutes replacement. I put out quality and tell my guys if they want to speed install go work for satellite. Take your time and do it correctly.
@@MW-xv1sj I would like to see sealer applied to the car to cover any scratches that might have occured during removal of old adhesive before installing new adhesive. Wow! He did an amazing job! I wish all Safelite employees were as professional as him. In Miami the Safelite employees I encountered were rude and careless. Excellent video!
Thanks, I was impressed with him as well! Thanks for commenting!
same here in ct. the glass company i work for has some ex safelite guys and i hear nothing but horror stories
Most of them are not educated enough. I've been doing glass in Dallas Fort Worth for 23yrs. I also installed in Vegas for 3 yrs. I have fired at least 10 guys that came from Safelite. I have also seen very Good Techs from there as well. Definitely more bad then good. This young man did a pretty good Job.
I'll be honest I did work for Safelite before the commercials when we were the best glass company in the are. Then Belron came in the picture. Everything went south now It's one of the worst glass companies out here. I actually fix their problems "IF" the vehicle was not totaled. I just did a Jeep Wrangler they tried 3 times to stop an air noise. I pulled and reused the glass they put in, and stopped the noise she had issues with. The glass was not properly and evenly set. And the totaled vehicles is from not paying attention to the bottom when running the wire/fiber line cutting off the bottom pinchweld some attached to the firewall. You can call any bodyshop or dealer and ask if they would recommend Safelite you might hear a laugh or giggle before the tell you, "No!"
@@Miguel_A_S in 35 years in the glass business I always hear one criticizing the other rule of thumb you're probably the butcher
very professional, he even cleaned the side windows on the doors. great job indeed.
He did a great job, did it the correct way. Video taping is a good way to get a good job done too. I video tape most jobs that I have done by a company....but I try to do most everything myself.
Idk.
It would seem like a hassle to film every job. I'm sure there's a video you could find. Or just watch.
I don't think most people like to be filmed while they work.
It's not about doing a good or bad job. Some people just don't feel comfortable with a camera pointed at them.
I mean would you want that at your job?
Learning how it works is just an excuse for I don't trust the company or worker.
That's fine but let's be honest about it.
I highly doubt people watch someone so they can do it the next time.
And why would you?
Sure you might save money but I would rather save the time.
You can earn money back.
You can't earn time back.

This was a true professional window installer, I like the way he used the dash protectors and the hood mat before he started his work, these clowns here in New York don't do any of that. Grady. How long you been with Safelite and would you say it is a good career? I just got a job offer to work at Safelite as a Technician trainee in a couple weeks. I am excited but nervous also. After training do you usually get to take a Safelite van home with you or is it only available while at work? Also, i was given an hourly base pay in my offer letter. Does that increase after the training program? Is it 6 weeks training? Thanks for any advice or help. I am very customer focused and love working with cars as a hobby doing window tinting, car stereo installation and customizing so thats what really made me apply to Safelite.

Thanks! Just got back from a successful appointment and I got curious about the replacement process
Nice video, good to see he is using those fiber line cutters instead of just putting a saw blade to the glass and possibly scratching up the metal underneath.
I use to be a Safelite employee as a tech, best of belron competitor, and manager I would also occasionally help in training guys that were going through Safelites training course to become an installer. Unless times have changed where is this kids chemical resistant gloves, he for sure wasn't wearing cut resistant gloves for either the removal or installation of the glass, most importantly the removal. Especially in Florida where it tends to be hotter climates and glass can fracture or break much easier and he was bare handed lifting that glass up. Prepped the glass barehanded as well and only put a single glove on for shooting a skin on the glass and to smooth the adhesive out. Also is Safelite using primerless glue now? I thought they were using Sika products which require primer if its Mach 30 and Mach 60 I don't think I saw him prime his windshield at all. I also don't think I saw him use a scotchbrite abrasive pad, or sika's, HDX version of the magic erase pads to remove any oils or contaminates from the frit installation area especially handling the glass barehanded and the natural oils in our skin. While using his easy wire tool he only used the dash protector, he didn't use the pillar and headliner protector, I didn't look like he used any type of a positioning clips on the bottom of the glass to hold the wire in place, which is why when the wire tightened up he got out to look to see if it was caught on something before finishing wiring it out. No seat covers, no steering wheel cover. Safelite is funny, I know guys that have lost their jobs for much less then this. These are "compliance violations" and each one were to be considered grounds for termination. I'm not knocking the installer at all, he's not bad with the Safelite tools. It's Safelite period how things are suppose to be consistent through out any region, any market, you're suppose to be able to go over seas and pickup where you left off.... Search UA-cam for installations done by the company "Carglass" they just as Safelite does fall under their parent company Belron and watch a CarGlass installation. Sorry it's just very interesting to me. I fell in to their politics and that is a company I would never return to and work for. I was an award winning employee every year until they started bringing in people from like Walmart, DHL, Fedex to run an automotive business that knew nothing about automotive! But hey as long as their numbers are looking good on paper and in the system I guess it is what it is because that's all they care about. Safelite there is no room for growth either, you land the job you want start making the money you want and when you make a little to much they find a way to take it away or just cut you loose regardless how many years you have invested. Unless there is a natural disaster that strikes then you are all in and it's whatever you want until that runs out too...... Someone show me Safelites turn over rate for employees! I want to see that.
Hot damn Paullie, that’s a comment for the ages.

Speaking nothing but the truth here
To be fair given I wouldn’t know the situation, nor company guideline but at least for me if someone was recording me work I’d be nervous as heck, probably messing up with some stuff, but I do agree that when you work with a company and they have a strict set of guidelines to uphold if your not doing that well and are actively aware, it’s fair id fire em too

Thanx for the vid! Just (like an hour ago) had mine done by Safelite. Originally they said between 12:00 and 5:00. Guy called today and said between 1:00 and 3:00 and he showed up a bit before 2:00. So, that was great. Except the only meeting I couldn't move was at 2.. ;-( So I got him started and went to my meeting. I was wondering what he was doing. ;-) He was very polite and professional and it looks great so far. (I was able to run back out to check it after he had left...)

@@marlonorsburn4345 Same windshield is still on the car today 😀
Cool the windshield even had the factory visor tint something I’m particular about having in the replacement.
I used to work at Safelite autoglass in Chicago. This guy did everything well! Hopefully they dont overwork him like our shop did. I was a mobile technician and we had to do 6 jobs a day mandatory. A normal windshield like this takes about an hour to an hour and a half. Most windshields nowadays require to be recalibrated as well which can take another 30 minutes. Then theres travel time with traffic between each job. I would get home really late every day burned out. Wasn't the best company to work for. Safelite rarely gives out raised. Its all numbers based.
Thanks for commenting. The windshield from this video is still on my car and it’s never leaked or made wind noise on the highway. Sounds like a grind to work for them, not an easy day for sure.
I've removed and replaced windshields before. I wish I have that rotary tool for cutting through the urethane. Makes it look so easy. I only have a cold knife and if you aren't careful can scratch the roof or A-Pillar even if you add some scratch resistant tape at the arch of the blade.
My QM would freak if I didn’t aktivate in one direction or use nitrile gloves lol but he did an excellent job! Good work 👍

Love watching how things like this are done. Great job and turned out nice!
What do they do with the inspection and emission stickers? My windshield is being replaced this Friday and was wondering what about the stickers on the old windshield?
We don't have those in Florida but the installer may have a method of removing them from your old windshield.
Depends on the state you live in. I live in New Jersey and the stickers are easy to take off after the windshield is removed from the car. States like New York and Pennsylvania stickers cant be removed. They have serrations on the sticker when you try to remove they fall apart. They make them like that so you cant transfer the sticker. I know this response is 2 month from when you posted your comment but hope this helps you
Just had my done here in La. Safelite guy removed inspection stickers, oil change stickers, etc. from old windshield very carefully and then reinstalled on new one. 100% professional
What do they do about inspection stickers and things of that sort
Not sure since we don't have car inspections in Florida.
Thanks! I got my windshield replaced about a year ago. Seems fine, except there is a rattling from the dash at low to regular speed on local roads. Seems to go away on the highway. More pronounced at the driver side, but also sometimes around the center? Do you experience anything similar? I watched the video to try to see if there was anything under the dash near the windshield that could cause the rattle, but I don't see anything other than some yellow wires across the center of the dash, but those look tucked in and wouldn't come loose from an installation.
No my interior doesn't make any noise at all. He did a good job!
is it a dodge journey?
If your windshield has a heated wiper park area it sounds like it's not plugged in. That would let it rattle sometimes.
@@CarStory is that really a Subaru? Lol mine has all kinds of rattles

How long does it take to replace windshield
this replacement took 90 minutes but time can vary based on the car.
Was there a post-installation wait time before you could drive it? Some web sites say you have to wait several hours for it to cure. What was your experience?
They say don’t drive the car for at least an hour unless you really need to. Waiting at least four hours is best. I didn’t use the car until the next day.
With the new product used the safe drive away time is 30 mins
Why would you put the seam in the middle of the top of the glass. I would want a continuous bead along the top. Maybe that’s why windshield leaked. But I was told there was some of her issues for the leaking. Went to another glass shop and they let me watch and they ran a continuous bead across the top. Now I know why the leak! Thanks for the video.
Why wasnt the glass or aperture primed??
I was wondering the same thing no primer on the pinchweld from any scratches. Or none on the glass
Some guys prime the glass at the shop and if he didn’t scratch body while trimming you don’t need to prime old bond line just activate
@@jtwilson1982 you can see definitely no primer on glass. Awful job. Nonseat covers no gloves
lgu400angus look at the grit of the glass u can clearly see the primer . Primer is much more dark and the frit is more like a Matt type color . Sounds like u just started doing AutoGlass
Definately black primer on the windshield. Noticehow at first you can see the defroster grid? Then when he shoots the urethane bead you dont see it as much anymore. If your as good as me... You wont scratch the pinchweld at all on this specific install...
Everything I’ve read says that windshield install that are correctly done require wearing gloves to keep hand oils from interfering with adhesive
You are correct.
If the tech is careful it's fine. It's not hard to not touch the thin line where the glue goes. That's the only place it matters. People always find something negative.

Hello there, great video. I have a question. In the beginning of the video the tech mentioned the windshield didn't say Subaru. Did you have a choice to get a OEM replacement? thx
I did not know at the time but yes I could have requested an OEM windshield. I was told by another glass installer that unless you have acoustic glass for extra sound insulation, the OEM windshield is no different than the aftermarket glass. Regardless of that, next time my windshield breaks, I am requesting OEM glass just to see if I can get it. Your insurance company can refuse that request or make you pay an extra fee for it.
@@CarStory that makes no sense that your insurance can refuse oem replacement. Thats like saying if an oem wheel gets damaged you have to get an aftermarket one. No, if they are covering the replacement it is supposed to be oem. If not you have a crap insurance company.
@@Hallowsaw not true. I work in the auto glass industry and if you do not have an oem rider in your policy, they may not cover it.
You can get the make glass, however it usually takes a while longer to get the part. There’s honestly zero difference. Chances are the glasses are made in the exact same shop, just one went down the Subaru line, the other went down the aftermarket line
What is the name of the equipment he uses to swing the glass into position?
I’ve got an interview for Safelite tomorrow, it’s cool to see the process
How did that go?
The technicians might be good, but it's been my daughter's experience that their windshields are poor quiality glass. She just spent $400 on a windshield and the VERY NEXT DAY it had a rock chip that spidered. You can't tell me they can't make a windshield any better than that. They won't do anything about it either. They were a total waste of $400!
Same thing happened to me a month after this windshield replacement. I got a small crack that had to be repaired.
Got a safelite appointment tomorrow
So nervous because they already have totaled 1 of my cars from not being able to replace and seal windshield properly

You think that with me not driving the car much this kind of thing would be less likely to happen. I mostly use the STI for 200 mile round trips between Orlando and Tampa once or twice a month. There are lots of trucks on the highways and there's always small rocks bouncing around behind them. I try to stay away from them until it's clear to pass. I heard something hit the glass but didn't know the windshield was cracked until days later. This guy did an amazing job replacing the windshield and I really can't tell it was replaced. If you have a WRX, this is what replacing the windshield looks like. The installer told me he does 8 windshield replacements a day. Hopefully I won't need another windshield for a long time. Thanks for watching!
Eh shit happens. I broke my glass a week after I took it home from the dealer lol. Was pretty upset about it since replacement glass isn't as good but whatever.
@@Chris-us7tj 4 weeks later another rock hit my windshield at 70MPH and my new windshield cracked again. I took it to a local Safelite shop two days later and they filled the crack before it spread. Are there electronics that are installed to the windshield since they have a defroster?
No at least on my windshield there isn't.

What did he take the tape off after installing I thought it were to.remain on ?
How did he bend your inter cooler fins ? Could that cause more problems with your engine?
It wasn't a big deal. Part of his hand hit the intercooler when he was removing screws to remove the wiper blades. I check my intercooler on a regular basis to make sure the fins don't get bent by other things like large bugs hitting it after they get sucked into the hood scoop. The fins are easy to bend back straight. Yes it can damage the turbo if something was to close all the airflow for the intercooler but that would never happen. A few bent fins won't hurt anything.
Car Story I just got me a xt turbo outback! Loving the car but don’t know much about it yet.
big deal for those that expect the ride to not be damaged during a repair.
@@punktalleyI’m pretty sure the more u took a car to shop for work the more small damage happen and u Wuz never told smdfh dude be for real atlest he wuZ honest
It's a big deal to those they worked hard for their ride and all repairs has risks involved but if you call a professional place they should explain those risks and how they are handled before doing the repair. @@frozenking9394
How long did that take, start to finish?
Does it have to be replaced or can it just be repaired? I had window tint on the front and don't wanna pay again for it
a crack usually has to be replaced. a small dent can be repaired.
Great video, how long did you start driving and also go to Carwash after the replacement?
I didn't drive it until the next day but the installer said wait about four hours to drive it if possible. I didn't wash it for a week after the install.
@@CarStory thanks, I just replaced a cracked BMW 7 series back glass yesterday, but drove about 4 miles back home after from the installer and packed in garage, he warned also not to wash for a week.
That was a good job he did,
That tech know what he is doing
Great vid. Side note we’re u get that steering wheel cover?
james randall There is a video for the wheel cover on my channel. Search for Zatooto Flat Bottom Steering Wheel Cover on Amazon. There is an amazon link in the video description for that video as well.
Im from Germany i wont start here by Autoglass business. The tools that you are using looking pretty useable. Where can i buy it? I couldnt found any Shop for it. Thanks in advance.
My left and right pillars have glue residue. Did you have the same problem?
On the inside or outside? I don't see that on mine.
@@CarStory the left inside is the worse one
@@Alimboi Did you let Safelite know? They can probably do something about it at their shop.
@@CarStory I actually brought my car in to Honda, not sure the vendor they used is SafeLite. They’re claiming the glue is in the outside and wouldn’t come into the car, and won’t even bother to take responsibility
@@Alimboi Wow that is poor service for sure. Sorry to hear about your experience.
I see your in Fl, I’m going to get my windshield replaced today and I was dreading it take all day hopefully they will call me sooner for pick up. My nephew hit my windshield with a basketball 😒
I have to go to them Tuesday through Allstate insurance. Idk how your state is but did you have to get a new registration sticker and inspection sticker on your window?
Thankfully we don't have registration or inspection stickers in Florida messing up the windshield. They will probably remove the stickers safely once the windshield is removed. They probably come right off with a hot air gun to warm up the glue.
Cool video! Our mdx windshield is bad I’m excited about having it done - online quote was 340 which isn’t bad for at your hosie
So how long did this actually take for them to replace you windshield?
around 90 minutes
I have to get mine done today and I was curious of the process and how long I was going to have to wait. Lol. I have to go to them. My windshield is $300 + to get replaced and to have them come to me was an additional $50
I’d make sure to have a $ 100 comprehensive deductible. Replaced a windshield on a 2019 Trax....$408.....buddy paid $1800 for Volvo replacement with built in electronics. Both done at Safelite.
@@hoffrun It actually costed him $1,800. 00 to have is window replaced?
I did my windshield yesterday and today is raining is that safe?
I can't remember the recommended time before getting the windshield wet but I think after 12 hours you are ready for anything.
Can they replace it with a more sound isolating windo i wonder?
Did he try up selliing you some of their unbeatable wiper blades
LOL I think he did.
what cind of spray is that ?
Will they cut out the inspection stickers from the old windshield?
I'm sure they have a way to do that although since we don't have those stickers in Florida I can't say how.
Hi, I'm 6 months late here, but I worked for a mom and pop auto glass shop for 2 and a half years and id say 95% of the time we were able to at least cut inspection stickers off the old glass, but they didn't always adhere to the new glass.
Many states have single use stickers that don't pull off entirely (think the security stickers on electronics that say "void" if you try to pull it off), and other absolutely sadistic states (looking at you, New Jersey) have paper stickers that will disintegrate when you try to remove them.
Most of the parking permits, car wash passes, fast passes, etc were able to be saved no problem unless they were incredibly sun damaged.
Quick question, Do you need to have any type of certification or license to do this type of work? Thank you
You don't need a state approved certification or anything, but Safelite does their own training and certification.
I work for safelite, to be master tech you have to do at least 6 or 7 jobs in 1 day, in 1 week has to be 27 or 30, thats crazy
You mean master hack
Are you still with safelite
Did you have whistling from the wind driving on the highway?
Todd Montgomery No, all is good after the replacement.
Very nice video. Very informative.
All windshields are aftermarket windshields at a auto glass shop unless you ask for a OEM windshield which is more pricier I’m also a auto glass tech but I work for a family owned auto glass shop
Yes very true! My wife needed a windshield for her GTI and we requested a OEM windshield and we got one. It cost the insurance company $850 and it was 100% covered here in Florida! Next time I need a windshield for my STI I will request OEM glass.
No it's not. I only sell and install OEM glass and if the customer doesn't want to pay for OEM or OEMe then I won't do the job.
Did you tip the technician?
Great video
