I'm trying to work at a publishing company once I finish college! I'm sure it's stressful at times but I hope you enjoy working there; it seems like it could be amazing!
Also some of the best books I read in 2014 were Neil Gaiman's American Gods, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Amy Poehler's Yes, Please, and Gabriel Marquez's Love in the Time of Cholera :)

I'm so excited you mentioned Sabriel, it's been my favourite book for a long time (I got Clariel for Christmas and was so excited I nearly cried! The cover is gorgeous) but no one seems to have heard of it which is sad because it's such an excellent book (and trilogy, Lirael's actually my favourite) and I want to talk to people about it. Hopefully, you mentioning it might spark some more interest!

My favorite book of 2014 was definitely Red Rising. It's a dystopic YA but with a fresh twist. IT mixes classical culture and science fiction, plus, it has a lot elements that we already love like the Greek and Roman Gods of Percy Jackson, the social commentary of the Hunger Games and the amazing battles for power of A Song of Ice and Fire. Book 2 in the trilogy comes out tomorrow!!

The picture of Dorian Grey by Oscar Wilde, The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson, The Elephant Vanishes by Haruki Murakami (first of his I have read, not that I think it is the best) and both One Day by David Nicholls and landline by Rainbow Rowell as they were the first books of that type I was able to enjoy which I'm glad about because they allow me to sort of break in between other books and really develop a sort of connection to the characters as people rather than focusing all my energy on these huge ideas and issues constantly.

I think my faves of the year were We Were Liars, Wither, everything I read by Dawn O'Porter, The Lover's Dictionary, and then my absolute number one, The Invention of Hugo Cabret.

Oh my GOD. I remember reading the Old Kingdom Trilogy way back in the day, potentially 8-10 years ago, and I remember loving them. So much. The bells in particular absolutely fascinated me. Will definitely have to go back and read the lot of them (I think it's been long enough that I wouldn't remember the plot fully, so it'll be like reading for the first time again!).
On the subject of Garth Nix, his Seventh Tower series was also one I really enjoyed when I was in my early teens. Once again, can barely remember the plot, but I do remember that he nailed the worldbuilding. So glad to know that he's back with Clariel (which I'll definitely be reading).

"We Were Liars" sounds intriguing, think I'll look for it next time I'm at a bookstore. My favourite read in 2014 was Rivka Galchen's debut collection of short stories, "American Innovations" (don't let the title dissuade you, since it is oddly titled). I've been recommending it to everybody. I found her narrators' (all 20- or 30-something year old women) perspectives and personalities were terrifically strange and fascinating, I enjoyed her unusual style of writing.

Hi Sanne! I'm an American living in Belgium and have been learning Dutch for the last 4 years. I have acquired quite a high level of proficiency (I study courses instructed in Dutch at the university), but still find that creating the structure of the language doesn't come naturally for me when I attempt to reproduce it myself (in writing or in speech). Reading really helps me to learn new vocabulary and to become more natural. I was wondering if you would recommend Het Diner for a non-native reader or do you think it might be too difficult to be an enjoyable read (enjoying the reading process is key! I read so much for uni in Dutch and that's not always enjoyable, so in free time I would like it to be enjoyable ;) )? Do you have any other recommendations for books by Dutch (or Belgian) authors for non-native readers?

My favourites of 2014 were "To All the Boys I Loved Before" by Jenny Han, which really appealed to the romantic in me, "You Against Me" which is this really gripping story about a party going wrong and a boy being accused of rape (plus it's really feminist and deals with rape culture and stuff) and "The Night Circus" by Erin Morgenstern just because it was so magical and beautifully written.

WAIT! The Dinner's plot is reeeally similar to the film Carnage by Roman Polanksky, have you seen it? It's awesome, and Waltz is in it which makes it absolutely awesome and hilarious. Highly recommend it!

booksandquills I absolutely loved 'We were lairs'. Bought it on your recommendation and read it on a long haul flight London-Brazil and it stole my heart. I actually finished it once I got to my boyfriends house and it was so surprising and heartbreaking and I just wasn't expecting the ending. :D So I called Leo set him down, and explained it all to him (he doesn't read!) as I just could not, not share it with someone! Do you recommend any other books on similar lines? You make me want to read more!!
