Your passion for working on cars is truly astounding. Your videos make me want to work harder and harder on my NA. 3 years ago I had never done an oil change, 4 months I swapped a 99-00 engine and 6 speed with a MS3 into my NA. Thank you, Craig ;)
Love love love that you went with the bronze retrofit! I went with Delrin and spherical bearings because I’m a glutton for punishment. Keep up the great work!!!!!!!!!!!
I use marine grade grease on all my bushings, it works really good. It's a must have if you do like a bushing style insert on a oem mount. Be sure to wear gloves, it's insanely tacky.
Also, when I did this job I used a 3 jaw puller and it was so hard to line up. And some of the bushings were so stuck I bent the threaded rod and junked the puller. Then I just set a fire in my backyard patio and threw the control arms into it.
Interesting solution for the sleeve! Used 3 arm puller and heater gun when changed to orange Polybush kit (flexing poly with sleeve fastened to the poly material, so function as rubber oem ones, but more reliable and a bit stiffer - fast road). Got out upper arms, but kept the lower font ones in place and changed bushings right there. A bit less working space but can be a pain to loosen the ball joints.
i changed all the bushings in all of the control arms when i installed fortune auto coils on my 99. the bushings themselves were pretty expensive from the dealership and i actually found it cheaper to just buy brand new control arms all around from rock auto with the bushings already installed so no pressing them out, just swapping control arms :) pro tip for anybody else!
Maybe sadfab can retroactively sponsor the show, because this is one hell of a sales pitch. I’m still another year or so away from my next Miata, but these are on the list
Nicely timed video Greg. I'm up to my eyeballs trying to fit new (OEM) bushes to the front suspension of my car and the old ones are proving to be a heap of trouble. I think I need to get some heat on the job. Thanks for the tips 👍
God, I read Aidan’s entire build thread and the development of the sadfab brakes and bushings and such. Honestly I’m surprised to know that they’re actually making products. His car is dope, yours is dope, god I need another Miata.
Did poly bushings on my NB, I used the jaw puller as well. It took two full days of work. Good drive feeling but after a while they started squeaking. Great video!
I was going to use grease fittings in my poly bushing install but i instead found an alternative method. I found Mike Kojima recommends applying a layer of Teflon tape in addition to grease to keep the new bushings from speaking over longer periods of time. The example i saw was supposedly a 5yr old poly bushing install that was pulled off the car still not squeaking. i performed the install with teflon and no squeaking immediately as expected but more time is needed to truly test.
This looks like a good solution, I would not recommend using standard or cheap poly bushes in the long term. They can become very stiff to the detriment of safety without regular greasing and maintenance. Even channelled poly bushes require some ongoing lubrication. I’m looking these up because it seems like a good alternative
I always wondered if a double-sleeve design would solve it. That and/or a hybrid poly-delrin bushing, which I have yet to see come to market. Though if you're doing a hybrid bushing, might as well do rubber-delrin so you don't have compression setting from the poly, right?
How about freezing the whole control arm, then trying to get the bushing out? Maybe the metal and rubber have different warming rates, or you could freeze then apply a little heat to the outside of the metal as shown here.
Wish I knew about that Sadfab kit earlier. I just recently replaced my old poly bushes with some IL Motorsports rubber ones for the exact reasons mentioned in your vid.
He needs to upload more like ya it sucks he has to work and doesn’t have time but his channel is dope and I feel like I learn how to do stuff on my Miata
Great vid! I will be doing that same thing soon, but I have another set of arms to paint and all. Also I am gonna install far superior SuperPro bushes. no need for SADfab mod with those
With these bronze bearing kits installed, will the control arms move freely without the shocks installed? Unlike the preloaded twist of the stock rubber?? I'm wondering if the suspension would be better at absorbing small bumps if it could respond faster do to less stiction and how it would effect the original design philosophy.
Great ideas with the drilling & adding lube nipple 😃👍 i live in Australia & we have Polyurethane Bushings & Nolathane & Rubber of Course ! i use SuperPro Bushings & The Company says they don't / won't squeak 🤔 ive only had suspension done recently so i hope SuperPro are right in saying they wont make a noise in the future , My Question to You is Can we do your method of sending tubes aways for drilling on all brands & parts for our cars ??? Or just the particular brand you are using ??? Could i get my SuperPro Bushings done same way you have done your Bushings ??? Steve in Bundaberg Australia 🇦🇺🍹🕺
Good video and I'm glad to see you back making videos again but hey Greg you had all the parts out the car you couldn't take them down to the power washer and wash them off first LOL 🤣
Greg, can you help us out with putting a list on your website of all the tools one will need to build a motor? I’ve also got a VVT 1.8 that I would really like to rebuild to similar specs, but I’m terribly unprepared in the tools department lol
I finished a 1.8 (not vvt) rebuild recently. Apart from the obvious socket and wrench set the only special tools I used was a torque wrench (you need a 1/2 drive or bigger to torque the crank and fly wheel bolts), and a piston rings compressor. Also the Miata uses 12 point bolts on the head so make sure you have a 12 point set and a 6 point set as if any bolts are seized on at all the 12 points will strip the head but a 6 point should be fine. Then if your going to be re-using your rods you'll just need pliers and a mallet. Using that and the back of a screwdriver you can pop out the piston connecting shaft. I know I'm not Greg but hopefully that helps. Good luck man!
I actually just put poly bushings in a couple months ago in my 95, I used a ball joint C clamp kit. Lemme know if you want any help with stuff or want to cruise some canyons, I’m also located in San Diego.
Hiya quick question some one might be able to answer. Are sadfab still going? been trying to order a bush bearing kit for my na, sent an order form on their website and emailed them direct and have had no response… any ideas any one???
Can you give me a link, if you have one with how the car drives, before and after? I like the SADFab idea! Some guys say it's barely noticeable of a difference, I'd be doing Corvette Arms , so it's pretty labor intensive, (*12 bushings) . Delrin or monoball might be horrible on the street. There's a lot of install videos. I like this one! I'd like to hear some real driving experience, thanks
Just with considering that the original factory bushing lasted hundreds of thousands of miles. I didn't think the poly bushes will last anywhere near that because the r&d is not there.
Energy Suspension had been in the business a very long time, this isn't a cheap set of chinese knock off bushings. They're not claiming to outlast OEM's as the primary benefit (although they probably will), it's for people that want the perfomance benefit of polys. 🙂
just installed these on my NA but i was wondering, the washers u used that came with the kit, do you have to install these somewhere? i lost the papers that came with the kit but did you end up using these other then to press that bushing in? i used your video's every step along the way in restoring my NA, best miata channel out there!
Similar to the included Energy Suspension pins, its odd to me that these pins aren't WIDER than the bushing material itself. To me, without making the pin wider than the bushing, once you torque the bolt, it will still have an element of drag on the side faces of the bushings. Am I in the wrong here?
Dont you think the movement between the bearing ant the sleeve will actually wear them out and thin out the bearings after some time. Or is it the greese acting like OIL in an engine?
I just took my pretty slammed Miata on a 2k + mile trip with polyurethane bushings and it was a nightmare lmao. I brought my girlfriend too and she never wants in my car again she said 😪. NVH is so bad but I'm just used to it lol.
I have the same bushings in my 97 NA, and after taking it in the rain for a little drifting both rear lower control arms have their bushings popped out. This work was done by the previous owner, so I need to buy new rear bushings for the bearings etc, or just press them back in?
@@a.drenalinet.herapy9489 Sounds like it might be missing the washers or something, the bushings should not be able to come out once everything is bolted onto the car
Hey carpassionchanell. Love the videos. Because of you I no longer feel the timing belt and water pump job is monumental amount of work. And I pull Nissan transmissions at work. Thank you. Also, years ago I saw I saw aftermarket upper control arms with serviceable ball joints. What's your take on those?
why didn't I see this before I put in the master kit. And why didn't I see this when I removed all of them again, trimmed them down, then noticed that the CA's slide fore-aft along the trimmed bushings. I hate these mods, SadFab kit has reassured that third time is in fact the charm. Bad part is, I've trimmed my poly bushings so they don't bind against the subframe mounts, so now the SadFab kit likely won't work with the bushes that are in the arms. Good lord.... now what.... any suggestions anyone? All new kit and use SadFab retro? Replace all poly with MS bushes? I'm gonna go cry
Greg: fantastic knowledge and skills you have! Where did you learn all this?! BTW The control arm w/ bushings looks like my motorcycle swing arm main bearing including the grease nipple. Best, Rob
Nice work. I can't wait to get my miata. Do you think the NB is better then the NA? Also if you had a skilled welder/fabricator what work would you have him do? Stitch weld the chassis? Make tower braces? Chassis stiffeners?

Yessss! Love it Greg!! Someone tell Fyeah spec that he fell short on this on his swapped miata build and was one up by GPSPEC! Legit as always Greg!!
Thank you for finally giving me a use for these giant C-clamps I bought at Home Depot last year.
SQEEEEK!!! Energy Suspension has been squeaking for 40 years! And more! 30 seconds in, and I was wondering when and if you were gonna get to that!
All thread rod and washers work pretty good for pressing back in. I used a stainless exhaust tube and all thread to push old bushings out, too.
Love love love that you went with the bronze retrofit! I went with Delrin and spherical bearings because I’m a glutton for punishment. Keep up the great work!!!!!!!!!!!

Subie King can’t remember what I was using but energy suspension has good grease that will last.

Amazing. I have the same adequate caliper.

How have the bushings been after these years?
Still great!
@@TheCarPassionChannel that's awesome to hear! So no squeaking?
