You would be quite supersized how many students excited about a certain subject don't always act all that excited during lessons. For example, someone who is excited about drawing, may not feel motivated to do some of the repetitive warm-up exercises or reading a chapter from a textbook on theory of colors.

I think what I like most about Diana is in pretty much any other show she would probably have just been written as the typical obnoxious popular girl antagonist but she isn't here and that's refreshing.

If me then yeah this episode is a great example of that in fact, in most shows like this the popular girl character after finding out the talentless student was planning to compete would concoct some way to mess with her or at least sneer at the idea. Yet Diana treats Akko the same as anyone else entering the contest.

Considering this show came out a full 7 months before the first EQG, I like to tell myself Sunset Shimmer is a palette swap of Diana.
