Major design flaw in the new LEGO Star Wars UCS AT-AT? I don't think so.

  • The new LEGO 75313 UCS AT-AT is an awesome set, but according to some recent reports it has a big design flaw - some Technic assemblies cannot be taken apart without damaging the parts. Is it really the case? Let's find it out!

UPDATE - to make it clear, the knife was *not used* for the disassembly, just tried to show what was suggested in the article. Here's a more detailed video about the story - ua-cam.com/video/4U4yZ3tVq4w/v-deo.html

When it comes to UCS sets - since these are preimium products- there are two kinds of customers: those who never take it apart, and those who never build it in the first place. Only a few unlucky people will have to do away with it.

Hard disagree. I build and take apart all my sets, and store then in crates, in zip bags, to rebuild at a later time.. For me the pleasure of Lego is in the building process and I don't have the space to keep my models on display at all time. I also disassemble puzzles when I'm done with them..

Disagree. I just don't have enough space to permanently display every UCS I have, so I rotate them - I periodically take them apart and build another one. I do keep some of the subassemblies intact for some though (like the Millennium Falcon for example)

Unpopular design choice used here, interesting. I would personally just use a piece of stocky duct tape (like Gorilla tape), press it firmly onto the axle "head", and gently remove, hopefully taking the axle part out with it.

I also managed to get technic pieces trapped in this very technic frame. There was no way of removing them without cutting a pin in half. Hated doing that, but I learned to be more careful while putting stuff together. The fact that this got green-lit baffles me.

Interesting, and good to know for anyone intending to someday pull this thing apart. As for design flaws, the 2020 AT AT has serious ratchet issues after having only built it less than a year. It'll still stand, but forget posing it as I find it'll just collapse due to the weight.

For me this was a problem even though I never wanted to take the set apart: it is possible to make an error on page 89 of the manual, and put the technic frame on the WRONG side of the rotating disc. You'll only notice this when it's too late at the time of attaching the leg and trying the mechanism: the technic frame rotated loosely while it should be fixed to the disc. So, I had to look up this vid and in the end I used a blunt knife to take the rod out. Once put on the correct side the problem is solved. Took me half an hour of wtf-ing before I noticed the two tints of grey didn't match the figure on page 89.

Hard to find a set without such "traits" nowadays, especially in technic line... Either problems with too soft suspension (Bugatti), 50 shades of green (Lamborghini Sian) or use of parts with friction ridges where there should be the non-friction used (e.g. winch of Jeep Wrangler), huge flaw in Zetros (you showed how to fix it, @RacingBrick) and gear-eating and canceled Osprey...

    • @McKrushi
      @McKrushi 2 роки тому

The suspension of the Bugatti was not too soft, it had too much friction. It's almost the same problem as with the steering of the 42114: If you use non-friction pins it is wobbly, if you use pins with friction it has friction... And since you cannot always use axles with stopper -> choose your poison.

I think lego is expecting this set to be assembled and (more or less) never touched again. Most of these massive star wars sets and display pieces, not play pieces. I think lego was just looking for something that works and looks good. Rather then "easy to dismantle". It is a lego set, so it should be able to be taken apart. But it's a special kind of lego set, so it's somewhat understandable

I think Lego always was a mark that was based on creativity, that means, that you should be able to modify everything (deasamble the sets). Now, if you use a building technique like that one, that you can't really deasamble, for me, that means that Lego hasn't the creativity on first place anymore, and that's sad to see.

Ok, not much of a problem with flexible Lego but still poor design. Lego Technic is used to by some to demo mechanical mechanisms and should, amongst other things, be teaching good engineering practice and this clearly is not. There are lots of sound engineering solutions if flush shafts are required - an extraction bolt hole being one.

LEGOs in 2000's is like the plastic model kits we built in the 1970s. When LEGO started making "kits" with instructions on how to build X, that's when the entire notion of "figure it out yourself" went out the window.
When I was a kid, I found a picture of the USS Kittyhawk in one of my dad's books and used damn near every LEGO block we had to build it, figuring it out myself. So I take these complaints about LEGOs with a grain of salt. Anyone interested in "free play" isn't buying a step-by-step set in the first place.

Bunch of cry babies, crying. You get an AWESOME set. Just look at the opinion of most content creators out there - some have even gone as far as saying that it very well may be the best lego star wars set ever. And yet people find reasons to cry. I wont be surprised that the next century people will look back on previous generations and say "20 century - baby boomers, 21 century - baby criers".

To me this is not a problem. Some people just like to find fault in every little thing.

I don't thinks so, I already have too many LEGO sets around here. There's no free space for huge Star Wars statues :)

To me this 'problem' was roughly on the par with removing old tiles that didn't have grooves... i.e. a bit fiddly but not a problem!
