60kph is the canon top speed, slower speed in combat doesn't change that. That's like saying an M1 Abrams has a top speed of 30kph because in combat it moves slower than when speeding down a highway/on faster maneuvers. Its going slower to have more time to engage targets and keep pace with other, slower, elements of the advance.
I personally hardly had a problem with keeping the gaps closed on mine but if you want to keep it tight I think your rubber band is the best strategy I've seen so far. It doesn't help that they made the joint on the cockpit panels bent by clip pieces so it's not fixated. I tried finding other ways but the geometry of the build is so intricate there's no easy connection to keep the gaps shut and if you do you lose interior accessibility.
the crazy thing is the small missed details - like the glove color. like....cant lego have lucasfilm nerds/archivists as well as 3rd party SW/lego nerds review this stuff in time to make changes???the glove color wouldnt even be an added costs to make it accurate!

Love the idea of those turning thingamabobbers for the infamous falling-off leg pieces! Genius!! That should've been there by design imo...
I have it too. I hate that the panels on the cockpit side leaves gaps. I made a video on how to close them
