i enjoyed this so much-peak october content! 🧛
the grey wool cape together with the lace collar suits you so well, and for some reason it made me want to elope to my foreign lover on one of those new steam trains! 🚂
also, i'm glad you like to read because in your commentary you had so many interesting thoughts and i have much i would like to say, if that's alright. 😊
i'm glad you brought up the vampirism/war metaphor, which maybe can be thought of as conquest at any scale. i think it's relevant and interesting that a vampire doesn't act in their own self interest-it seems more so that they cannot stop themselves in their pursuit for the end goal: externally sourced relief. (especially clear, i think, with dracula killing the crew on the boat which actively hindered him getting to london).
the metaphors of mirrors (no capacity for self-reflection) feels like it could fit with that lack of emotional autonomy, and not eating could be interpreted as a lack of capacity, or even opportunity, to process one's own feelings and solve problems on one's own, and therefore rendering them unable to nourish themselves with internal emotional reward. nobody ever wants to be emotionally inept and dependent (i think the group equivalent would be groupthink or gridlock) connecting to the "no one ever asks to be a vampire" point, but people do want and need relief and reward somehow.
it then makes sense to me that dracula desires the most introspective character (jonathan) the most, but the one who first falls victim is the one who was most readily and least critically looking to feel (lucy).
to the final theme of coming together and caring about one another, i feel we do really need to support each other in building and coordinating our emotional autonomies and unique ways of thinking, especially to prevent groupthink and war, and with the themes of the new woman who thinks and acts more autonomously (and the man who appreciates her), i feel that love, intimacy, and partnership, also friendship and community (and also books) can be a contexts for gaining emotional understanding and agency, (like approaching difficult feelings such as fear, hello it's dracula) and not just for social convenience or advantage-something we're still working on today!
and if it's not too bold to say, i think we might be doing some of that support in some modest way here with our discussion! 😊
also please tell me if this comment was too much. i like being this effusive but i certainly don't have to be. 🙃
thanks again for a thoughtful, fun, aesthetic video! 🥰

omg pls I live for long comments like this! First off, Dracula has def got me in a dramatic clothing phase lol I'm just sitting here wishing capes and top hats come back into fashion. Honestly I did not even make the connection about the mirror thing being related to vampires' inability to reflect on their natures. That is such an incredible observation and it fits so well! It is like a metaphor for how they have lost not only their souls but also their entire sense of self, even their sense of how they appear to others. and omg, your theory on why Dracula craves Johnathan so intensely is like blowing my mind. It makes so much sense that vampires would crave what they lack most, which is humanity and the ability to have an introspective sense of self. Lucy is displayed as the most 'shallow' character which makes her the most gullible and therefore accessible to vampires. So even though Dracula is physically sustained by Lucy's blood he still craves to be mentally and emotionally satisfied, which is why he never gives up on hunting Johnathan. I really wouldn't have thought about all this without your comment so really, thank you! I am so glad you enjoyed the video too ~

@@ArielReads_ "even their sense of how they appear to others"
oh my god you're so right, and what's more terrifying than that? what if you might have to face that you appear really scary and disgusting to other people?? 😳 no wonder dracula freaked out and smashed the mirror! 😣
      "lost...their entire sense of self"
i can't help thinking of how often i hear the term "dissociation" these days, and how delicate a process it can be trying to find the spaces where it's safe to genuinely approach, reveal, and therefore truly understand, one's own feelings and associations. i guess that was the case for bram stoker as well, which is why he used all the metaphors!
i'm very glad my thoughts landed and i look forward to the next time we get to have a long comment exchange! 🥰

The Video title is a threat. Why did I click on this? I don't want to read Dracula. Why is it recommended to me? Is it because I watched Castelvania on Netflix? The Internet Algorythmen is hauting me. 🧛
