Watching this through the eyes of a North American I am so utterly jealous of your county’s restraint when it comes to leaving the old towns alone and not paving it over and tossing a Target over it. Just the age of the town and alleyways, the Abby etc is hard for me to wrap my mind around. It’s gorgeous!

The EFFORT going into these vlogs *chef's kiss*. So appreciated and very entertaining. Dracula and Frankenstein are my all time favs and I think a lot of people are put off by them because they think they know the general story and that the books will be 'old and stuffy'. Couldn't be further from the truth. So pleased you enjoyed!

I don’t remember where I read it, but I saw someone compare Dracula to modern found-footage horror films, including the way the characters slavishly document everything, even in moments of peril. I think that’s what helps it to stand out in comparison to other epistolary style novels, at least the classic ones anyway.

Dracula was really so well-written and ahead of it's time. The book still holds with how creepy it is and it's definitely deserves to be a classic.

Haven't watched the entire video yet, but there is this new "Dracula Daily" thing that I have been loving! It is a mailing list that sends out the letters from Dracula in "real-time" mails, it's a way to consume the book in small chunks and has sparked an entire sub-culture on social media. The order of the letters and journal entries is not the same as in the book, seeing as the book is not chronological - so it's an entirely new way to consume this "daunting classic"

This was outstanding. Such an amazing effort. I read Dracula years ago but now I'm considering a re-read in October thanks to you!
I'd love to see you do a similar thing with Greenway (Agatha Christie's house) which was where she set Dead Man's Folly. Just a thought.

One of the best experiences I had while there was sitting in the graveyard of St Mary’s Church at 10.30 at night looking out to sea reading Dracula with my daughter, that will live with me forever, it was lovely! I read Dracula last year in October and I kept saying the same thing - why did I wait so long to read this! It is Gothic at its finest (the GOAT) and I remember sitting in my room by a window reading it in the dark so scared because I thought Dracula would climb up the side of the house and attack me through the window. Great Vlog !!!! ❤❤❤

I loved watching this vlog, it was great watching my home town through the eyes of a first time visitor. I loved that you were reading Dracula during your trip too, i5s one of my favourites. Watching you go through dracula experience was so funny, i used to go through there when i was a kid but its changed quite a lot! You need to visit during one of the goth weekends and visit the whitby museum which has some cool bits and bobs.

Ik this is an old vid but INSTANT LIKE!! I love dracula so much, i first read it fully last year via Dracula Daily where they send out each day's letters newsletter style, on the actual days they were written, every year! So much easier to digest! It really blew up on tumblr like a huge online bookclub a couple years ago and it was so fun but i only read about 3/4 of it the first year. So glad i finished it the next year!! (Theyre publishing a hardcopy of this arrangement too!!)

I've read Dracula a few times (and own a special edition copy that also contains Frankenstein). It's one of my favorite classic 19th century books. Part of my love of it comes from some of the movie adaptations. I have a reprint poster of the 1931 Universal version hanging in my bedroom, and I wrote a bio of Bela Lugosi (the actor who played Dracula in that version) for a term paper in college.

Loved this adventure! When Bram Stoker wrote Dracula he used a lot of the myths that existed in how to kill a vampire or tell if someone is a vampire, he based his vampire mainly in Elizabeth Bathory and a little on Vlad Tepes, basically his moniker Drakul, to name his character. Interesting note is that he, Mary Shelley, and Robert Louis Stevenson were all writing their famous gothic books around the same time.
The movie you speak about with Winona Ryder, Gary Coleman, Cary Elwes, and more is the most accurate to the novel although not everything made it into the movie it is the most faithful to the book...lol...I have loved vampires since I was a toddler thanks to Sesame Street and Count Chocula cereal. I think what cemented my love was the 1930's movie starring Bela Lugosi, he's the one that gave way to how we say, "I want to suck your blood." My grandma happened to be watching it and I adored it and had to know everything about it, I was between 6-8 years old, also they had Count Duckula on Nickelodeon which of course just made me love the vampire more.
I never laughed so hard, sorry, but you in the Dracula experience...lol... that's me in regular haunted houses and someone jumps out with a chainsaw, no chain of course, or if I enter and hear it right off the bat, freaks me out.
So glad you loved the book! Also, agree that the Captain's notes that were on the boat Demeter were creepy, but that was an awesome part. If you want to read more about vampires or Dracula himself I highly recommend The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova, it's written like Dracula with journal entries and letters, it was an interesting read. Dracula the Un-dead I haven't read, but I believe it's supposed to be like a sequel to Dracula. It's written by two authors, Dacre Stoker and Ian Holt.

Watched again. I love the train ride footage. Whitby at night definitely gives off creepy vibes, and I like it. The Abbey was so amazing. The views of the town and the water are so lovely from atop the 199-ish steps. I love that you showed your hotel room and what you ate in the restaurant. And that Dracula experience was so fun…sorry you got chased by a demon. 😆 Thanks for the tour, Gavin, and for including us on your super fun adventure. I loved it! 😘 Can’t wait to see more of your spooky adventures, especially the night you stay in a haunted castle! Stay safe!

Another amazing vlog - I am currently doing my own spookathon reading list, I am starting with some of your own suggestions btw Gav. Hide and Seeker first, liked it quite a bit, and now doing Scritch Scratch. And my first horror book I read as an adult was Come Closer earlier this year, also your suggestion, and I loved that too. Must admit I was not fond of the writing style in Dracula when I tried to read it as a teenager, but maybe as an adult I would appreciate it more now. Thank so much for everything!

Eeeeeee! So excited for this vlog 😊. What a gorgeous edition of Dracula; I recently bought one that I’m in love with that is illustrated by Edward Gorey. I remember how the first time I read Dracula, I was surprised and impressed that this story was able to get my heart racing and really felt scary at times. Most of my experiences reading older horror or gothic novels have not given me that same level of dread. Well this clinched it, I am adding Whitney to places I need to visit.

So nice to see your take on Whitby. If you ever feel like listening to the audio book, I'd like to recommend the version narrated by Mark Gatiss (Penguin Audio). I took a fantasy/sci-if English class at uni (many years ago), and we read Dracula. Bram Stoker was a manager for Henry Irving, a famous actor, and I feel like the time he spent in the theatre added to the theatrical quality of the book. Very readable ❤️📚🩸

I read Dracula for the first time this year, 2024, and I absolutely loved it! The atmosphere Bram Stoker creates was just so perfectly dark. I also waited way to long to read it. I was always intimidated by the length and was worried I wouldn't like it! LOL

I live near Whitby and went to school there and we read Dracula in our English and Drama Classes. 😂 Did you manage to find Dracula's Grave in the Graveyard? it's near the gate to the Abbey and is marked with a skull with a crack in it. Love going back to Whitby and Whitby Bookshop is a fav to go to along with the Down the Rabbit Hole Shop.😊 Glad you had fun and enjoyed the book.

This was fantastic Gavin! I listened to Dracula last year, and as I'm not English, I hadn't thought of Whitby as a real place I could visit. Dracula was a fantastic novel, if not a little long...For something different side of the same coin, have you read Carmilla?? I just finished it today, and it was FAB!

Hey Gavin, wow, this was great, I might just have to read this now myself.. Thank you for discluding spoilers, for those of us that haven't read it yet. Can i suggest a book for you? Vlad the Impaler
by Gavin Baddeley, it is not a Gothic novel but based on actual history.. A VERY good read, even if, truly gruesome. I only found your channel this morning, but as an avid reader, i am so glad i did.

Dracula is so good! Have you/will you read Carmilla by J Sheridan Le Fanu? It's also gothic lit about female vampires, published before Dracula! It's a great one too!

Hey, Gavin, recent subscriber here. I just started reading Dracula (love it too) and was so glad to see you made a vlog to Whitby! Thanks so much for giving me the visuals for the book and for being so kind, funny, and charming. I love all your videos.

I went to Whitby a few years ago and didn't really get to experience it properly because of who I went with (and it turned out to be a pretty shitty holiday). I'd love to go back and do it the way I want to!!!
