The point asmon makes about having the legion legendaries in his bag was a great one. Its the idea of making one thing good in certain situations and others better in their situations. It makes players not only make choice in the moment to fulfill a certain role but also the flexibility to on the fly swap to another unique and useful toolset.

What he's describing at 21:45 with the Legion Legendaries is exactly what Destiny does with Exotics. Basically a bag of tricks you haul around for specific situations. Blizzard need to design bosses in dungeons and raids where max dps isn't always optimal or required. By making everything cutting edge difficulty in mythic, you force people to pick the 1% dps increase and follow cookie cutter builds. Stop punishing players in fights for taking longer to kill the boss, reward them for doing mechanics right. Add mechanics that give better dps if you follow them. There is all kinds of stuff you could do, but right now there is nothing that seperates classes and specs, it's all down to the numbers. Add back resistances and damage types, that gives us a reason to make builds for specific encounters. Want to have difficult raids, make achievements that up the difficulty by forcing you to do things unorthodox, or take less viable methods. Make it viable to pick mobility, cc, other damage types over flat damage. Raidfights should be more about mechanics than damage anyway. I'm not saying make everything mythic KJ, one fuck up wipes the raid. Give personal responsibility, reward players who do mechanics and stay alive or do mechanics that progress the fight. Mechanics that allow you do do the fight faster the better you do them. That kind of stuff.

      Fucking TRUE

    • @ThePinkSora
      @ThePinkSora 2 роки тому

The problem with that is it would take shaking up the base combat system of WoW to do that. The reason it's all down to numbers and so on is because everyone is so familiar with the fundamentals of the combat system. You cannot design a boss that is pure utility/mechanics if you also want to have the combat system matter.
Basically, if you make a boss that has tough mechanics on a timer, high DPS makes the fight easier. If you have phases on boss hp then high DPS makes it easier, if you have add spawns, high DPS makes it easier, if you have specific mechanics that increase DPS (Alysrazor comes to mind) then high DPS still makes it easier.
I do agree that the game should be easier, but not just easier, rather more accessible. I feel the game is balanced too much around the degenerate shit done at the top end, so now even average guilds are semi-forced to participate. If instead mythic was tuned so that 25% of guilds, instead of 2% of guilds had the chance to clear it then perhaps 10% of guilds actually *WOULD* clear it, and that seems like a more healthy place.
To do that we do not need to uproot the combat system to make fights less impacted by DPS, but it may be interesting.

    • @Xynth25
      @Xynth25 2 роки тому +4

I mean that's literally what raid fights are now. Outside of the first two or three weeks damage isn't the issue holding you back from CE. Mythic raiding is literally Play Better, and there's so many encounters where you make a niche talent choice or a class goes one build if they're doing one role in the fight and a different build if they're not.

The biggest problem I had with most of these systems is the fact that the new systems weren't account wide. Another thing that made me mad was that they instantly threw out Artifacts after Legion like it was Mega Evolution in Pokemon X & Y

Are you referring to the Blood of the Enemy (and their healer/tank equivalents) or Conflict and Strife? If you're referring to Blood of the Enemy, for rank 3, I don't think 30k honor in battlegrounds is too terrible of a grind. 2 hours, so unless you're short on time it really isn't that bad. CONFLICT AND STRIFE HOWEVER, that one would suck for anyone that doesn't enjoy PvP and its their BIS essence, because that required multiple weeks of rated PvP if you weren't a high-end PvPer. Though I think for the most part most specs had Conflict and Strife as a minor power, not a major power BIS, and really having rank 2 vs rank 3 for that isn't that big of a game changer.
Ripple in Space is the only other PvP essence, a terrible blink isn't worth the trouble so I don't really count that one, especially when other minor powers were better to choose from than Ripple in Space's handful of primary stat that you got the same amount of regardless of the rank you had.

There were a handful of glyphs over the years that were stupidly overpowered, but that mainly came from the fact that they were enhancing things that tended to have that quality inherent in them anyway.
I can understand that it was probably a headache to come up with glyphs that did stuff that was useful and not being overpowered and balancing so much, but it added a lot. Glyphs, being able to reforge gear, gemming/paying attention to the color of gem used and making choices for that (along with having gear with guaranteed sockets), and enchants (both through rep and through the prof) all gave one control and immersion to one's character.

54:40 Dude, this part spoke to me so much! I've been saying for years that Blizzard needs to do something crazy with the classes, starting with creating a RANGED TANK! Even if they have to create a sort of shield or projection of the tank within melee distance of the mob to avoid redesigning whole boss mechanics and stuff. Like, the boss would be attacking a projection or shield at melee, and the actual player is ranged. And I love all the things you mentioned that have to do with making tanking and healing more accessible and more attractive. The Mythic+ waiting times need to be reduced so bad, man. I know you don't have this issue if you have a super active or hardcore guild but the fact of the matter is that most WoW players use the Dungeon Finder for their M+ runs. Blizzard needs to make tanking and healing more accessible, more fun, and more popular, and giving tanking and healing specs to crazy DPS classes would really hit the spot. Tanks also need a major boost to their aggro at the pull moment and for 3 to 5 seconds after the pull. After that, Blizzard can make the tank do their work with their DPS to keep aggro but making aggro weak at the pull moment makes tanking so freakin' stressful in many PuGs.

Whilst I didn't immmediately have my BiS on every spec, i quickly had a "good enough" one just through playing the game by the time ToV came out and player power was needed.
The community did itself a fuckload of harm in deciding they needed BiS legos for EN which was completely not tuned for that and my guild cleared Mythic with most not having their BiS because it just wasn't needed.
And by the time ToS came out the chance of having your best lego was high so it genuinely never bothered me.

One thing that always stuck with me when it comes to unlockable powers is the fairy ring teleportation network in runescape.
At first you need a useless staff to use them, and you have to always have that on you if you need to travel through the network.
Later on a quest rewards you with a staff that is not "quite" as useless that has the same ability... but later on, which is the part that stuck with me.
You get rewarded with an enchanted molar by the toothfairy, which allows you to use the rings without external aid.

Everything from Raiding to PvP to casual content was great in 8.3. Most fun I ever had raiding was doing 30 Tank Raids with TD and SotW essence. Just doing insane crits in the millions. There were so many super fun options to play!! 8.3 BFA is missed. People have fun when they feel like their character is broken OP and they are getting away with it. SL is an unplayable dumpsterfire devoid of ever attaining any meaningful fun. It's so bad!!!

I think 8.3 BFA was the Devs getting close to figuring out borrowed powers. Then they got rid of all of it and made the convoluted disaster that is SL. Hope they learn from this mistake.

New specs would be one of the greatest updates in WoW, A hunter who is a horseback archer, a Warrior samurai spec who focus on skill and poise for huge burst, a rogue who is more of a cruel murderer who uses traps, lures and dirty tricks to keep you in their control and separate you from the herd, a melee warlock who used their knowledge in demonology to become what they worship and control, a ranged death knight who uses death magic to destroy their opponents. The opportunities are high and varied, and it’s such a cool idea too.

Legion did have alot of borrowed power but imo all of it's systems was great and probably the most ambitious expansion blizzard ever done. Every class/spec had its own tailored msq with order halls and artifact weapons and everytime you logged in you had something fun to do. Probably the only expansion I played 24/7 since tbc back in the days for nostalgia reason. Legion was a GOAT expansion for sure far surpassing anything else blizzard ever put out and im sad that for some reason they listened to the crybabys in bfa and made a lidl version of legion.

Azerite gear had potential to be something amazing, I think that's what he is saying, not that it is better than tier sets in general (The concept is, but the way it was implemented is not). If Blizzard was more creative with the Azerite Gear system, it could have very easily replaced tier sets in a cool and fun way, adding a ton of customization to many builds.

My main gripe, and what felt absolutely horrible, was having to put Doomhammer, Ashbringer, Scythe of Elune, etc. into my bank to collect dust. Mere items that are used, grown in power and left to be a "Legacy Effect". Why? For what purpose would I stow them into a box to be forgotten? On the other hand, the Heart of Azeroth, like many other newer power systems are underwhelming, and have no interesting history behind them. The mix of these two conundrums are the most difficult part of designing borrowed power in a meaningful and long term way, we should have never gotten Ashbringer. It was a stupid idea to begin with, but it sold the expansion, and millions including myself had _fun_ with it.

Not to mention that people who enjoy doing high level stuff feeling compelled to farm as much as possible to try to get them because some of the legendaries were so powerful. People forget all the complaints at the start of Legion about how bad it was. It wasn't tied to anything - everything could get you one so players did everything. It feels really bad when you are raiding and can't get what you need while some random dude that plays an hour a week gets a BiS legendary while doing a WQ that ends up being WF (and I knew someone who was the latter). I even knew some raiders who were unlucky enough to have never gotten a legendary before clearing Nighthold.
Like in what world is this okay? Especially in a game where the community judges you by your gear? When you have that little control over your gear to the point that you are compelled to play far more than you would have doing things you don't like so that you can maybe finally do what your class should be doing - it feels bad.
You know what would have felt better? Working for gear augments through a variety of activities that were not random drops that enhanced what you were doing and got rid of the gambling aspect.

My biggest problem with borrowed powers that they are borrowed. Good "borrowed" power which isn't forcibly taken away to give you another of the same, but which just stays and then naturally gets irrelevant because obtain more powerful one. Basically how tier sets or just any armor function. Imagine if every expansion with their systems existed at the same time. So you level up, you become stronger, get new abilities and... at lvl 50 you suddenly become weaker just because you power turned into a pumkin. How is that makes any sense? It works in Metroid because it's different games. But there we play one game with linear level progression, but with lvling up we become weaker. Bullshit.

Blizzard should stop overcomplicating everything, just give us great upgrades, one for tanks, one for healers one for Melee one for ranged / caster. stopped playing mid term BFA, have played every addon before that but I just couldn't bear this crap anymore, my guild also got deleted and we did mythic clears in legion with the achievement for doing it pre-nerfs. Also the Mythic + Dungeons were much less fun in BFA compared to legion, in Legion they were challenging even at higher levels balanced, in BFA they were just plain and simple punishing, extremely punishing, even at lower levels.

Imo the only borrowed power in a game should be our gear, something that made the early years of wow so rewarding was that our character was the one getting more powerful. The past week I've been levelling on TBCC as a mage, I started out only being able to pull one mob at a time and then every two mobs having to wait for my mana or even my mana being gone after three spells. Now at level 25 I dont have to take nearly as many breaks unless I spam AoE but then I also have shatter now which for was what I had been building up to with the last 10 talent points by increasing my frost spells crit damage and the chill effects. Thats what people want, we want to feel like our time and effort put into the game is making our characters stronger, not this weapon or neckpiece makes us stronger. Covenants was a step in the right direction, I just hope they let us keep some of the passives and the covenant ability like fleshcraft, soul shape etc.

Gear is generally speaking a PROGRESSIVE power system, not a borrowed power system. A borrowed power system is one where the "power" is good during the expansion or a time frame, then it just ends when another expansion comes out or the time frame ends. Gear does not all of a sudden lose all its value, you have to go out and acquire replacement gear usually through player effort. The character progresses/improves in WoW with gear upgrades. If gear worked like the borrowed power systems then when an expansion came out all of a sudden your character would be naked (or more likely have a base gear set like when you first create a character) and the gear you had just vanished.

I still disagree: even if the method of acquisition was great, this doesn't solve multiple other issues with the design of these systems like how they invariably start out completely flawed and then take a year or more to reach a good state - this is a balance issue that is impossible to solve with these systems, it has been proven time and again.
What about the obvious fact that they are temporary? It's the name of the beast: '"borrowed" power. People constantly complain about how gear catch-up mechanisms completely invalidates the role of gear in WOW and they are the best example of how an easily-acquired thing can still be garbage that has no place in a serious long-lived multiplayer game.
What about all the development work that is put into those systems only to be thrown away next major patch? Compare that to a sane development methodology where each patch adds to the game as whole rather than have 90% of the balance, UI and QA and more effort thrown away wholesale when a new expansion starts?!
These are only some of the many more problems with the very nature of borrowed-power systems. This video does a great job of saying "acquisition is the worst problem with borrowed power in WOW" but for me it doesn't even begin to make a point for borrowed power being good in the slightest, for any game, in any long-term context.

    • @sere971

@@tukkek the problem is that without borrowed power systems, classes just stay the same forever-- there's no new exciting mechanics, *or* every single power gain is permanent and stacks on each other in a way that's probably even more hellish to balance than things are right now.
That's not really sustainable, but I hope nobody is silly enough to think that never having meaningful power gains like new systems or abilities would be a good thing-- doing the same exact rotations and numbers with no extras or modifiers expac after expac would be an awful compromise to borrowed power.
