  • This is the full installation DIY for the AvinUSA Avant 3 android multimedia navigation system.
    Simply said, what an amazing upgrade! The installation of this new display is really easy and you will be glad you did. I have worked with Avin for years, and seen how the company and their products have grown and this is a huge step forward.
    The touchscreen display is fast and responsive, GPS location is quick, and all the controls are right on point. I am especially glad they have continued the tradition of matching the button font and color perfectly, so this looks like a vastly improved OEM component, and not some garish aftermarket hack.
    Refer to the Avin product page for a full listing of features, but here is a short highlight.. GPS, navigation, android apps, TPMS integration, Wifi and even native 4G LTE cellular connectivity! It has just about every single feature you could possibly want in a new display, let alone being able to retrofit this into an older vehicle seamlessly.
    What amazes me even more is the integration into the car itself.. I was able to switch on 3 blink turn signals without any other coding.
    All in all, I am already really impressed with this display and I have only just begun looking at all of the technical and software details.
    **IMPORTANT NOTE** The example M3 in this case already had the double din OEM NAV, so the center console bracket didn't need to be changed. If you have the business CD, single DIN, setup, you will also need the OEM center console bracket and swap it out. I did not document that process here, but can help you with it if you have to do so. Shoot me a message or comment if so. The part you need is listed below, either single row or multi switch layout.
    Also, if you find your orange trim clips are broken or need to be replaced, the part number and listing is also below.

      Thomas S now that is odd.. cant say I have seen that. I would check the primary wiring harness to make sure it is seated fully.

    Hey DIY guy,
    I have the 2 din oem gps factory unit, and The only harnesses that plug in to it are a white one and a blue one, both look the same but with diferent colors. None of those adapters seem to fit them, I'm a bit confused, what should I do?

    • @BMWDIYGuy
      @BMWDIYGuy  5 років тому

      So definitely check in with Avin. I know with the E53 if you have the factory NAV, you needed a long extension cable to get to the unit back in the trunk area. The E46 may be the same.

    Great vid. It looks like the AVANT 4 has a few features incorporated into the head unit, like the sim reader. 2 questions: I have factory nav and I figure you did too. Did you have to run the 6' extension cables to the DVD in your trunk? Also, I have the Harman Kardon system. Will installing this unit limit my audio to only 4 speakers?

    • @BMWDIYGuy
      @BMWDIYGuy  5 років тому

      I didnt have to run the extension though have done so in a 5 series. It isn't hard, just route up under the door sills. You will still use all your speakers, so no worries there.

      Tony, I just bought the avant 4 and got the cable extension since i have the bmw factory nav and harmon kardon system...I see how it plugs in on the radio side but not sure what to do with the cables in the trunk when i run them back (obvi have the amp, the nav/gps metal box, and i don't think i need the dvd drive anymore....there's also some unused cables in the trunk that were never hooked up....i also have I think what is a gps antenna extension to run from front to back....I think this may plug into one of the unused cables that is wrapped up in the trunk....did you ever figure any of this out...was just hoping to have a little direction and not guess my way through it...thx

      @BMWDIYGuy  5 років тому

      @@andrews1722 I have run the extension once on a 5 series with factory NAV. So you didnt have factory NAV? If you didnt you usually dont need the long extension. You just pull the cable off the back of the head unit, and plug that into the new wiring harness, and then into the Avant4.

    • @andrews1722
      @andrews1722 5 років тому

      BMW DIY Guy yeah I do have the factory nav, it was easy to plug in the extension and the old radio harness into their extension cable on radio end but I’m wondering about the trunk end...has 4 plugs and not sure where they go...I assume I unplug the nav unit cable in trunk and plug 1 of 4 into that and take that one and plug it into 1 of the 4 from extension cable....

    I'm trying to use the IBUS app to unlock the canbus, but it keeps saying there's no connection to the vehicle. Do you know what's wrong?

      I figured it out. There's a male USB coming off the main wiring harness that needs to be plugged back into an empty USB slot.

    DIY GUY,
    I watched your video while I installed my unit in my e46. My volume controls do not work. The can bus is a stand alone unit correct or did I miss something? Any help you can send my way, I’d appreciate it.

      Happy to help how I can.. I would say check the canbus module and make sure it is fully plugged in. I didn't have any issues with this and it worked immediately, so my guess is that module.

      BMW DIY Guy ok thanks for the reply. I’ll try to get in touch with Avin and have a new module sent to me. I’ve sent several emails, however the replies are scarce.

    Hi, thank you for the video! It was very helpful. One question though: When the unit is powered on, I am hearing some kind of low buzzing noise from the speakers. I had the same problem with the Avant 2. When I mute the unit, it disappears. Back then, I read that it might be solved by grounding the unit. Any ideas on that noise and a solution? Thank you in advance! @BMW DIY Guy

This is where I am not an expert in that area.. another thought would be to look to the forums like E46fanatics and their electronics subforum and maybe folks would help? Sorry I am not more helpful than a reference.

      So far my research just showed some people explaining that these (chinese) units tend to buzz because of bad internal shielding.
      Any idea on rooting?
      Besides: I hope the promised Android Oreo will happen. I asked AVIN before buying and they wrote that it is planed for 2018.

    Terrific video and it looks like a great unit. I noticed there was no mention of SiriusXM, though. Is that an option or is there a work-around? Thanks.

      Great question.. as long as the android client works, you should be fine! Its not a platform I have used, so didn't speak to it.. great question though!

    • @dave232
      @dave232 6 років тому

      Thanks. Do you think it would work via a separate antenna? I'm guessing that, unless the head unit has a dedicated SiriusXM tuner, the android SiriusXM app would only play via a data connection.

    Hi, Thanks for this video! I have the Harman Kardon sound system so my connections are in the back of the car. Any tips for routing the extension cable?

    • @BMWDIYGuy
      @BMWDIYGuy  6 років тому

      Olivier Faber so guessing you have the factory nav? I haven't run that cable before but I have run several from the trunk for the backup camera etc. There is an easy oath if you pull the rear side carpet (right or left, wherever your connection is..) then pull the back seat base up and out. It's then easy to run along that path, under the door sill and then up into the dash usually behind the glove box. All in all easier than it sounds.

    • @OlivierFaber

    Which wire do I connect to the parking brake wire in the harness? Which wire in the car?

    • @BMWDIYGuy

    • @johnbearjunkyard
      @johnbearjunkyard 6 років тому

      There's a parking brake wire in the harness, I figured I'd hook it up just to be safe. I guess if it doesn't do anything I won't bother.

    • @BMWDIYGuy

      Another question :) I have the dual DVR system in my E46, but the rear camera doesn't come on when I put it in reverse. I know the rear camera works because I can see that it's recording in the recording app. Is there an app that's needed to run it? I have the red wire that goes to the head unit (along with the RCA cable) wired to the reverse wire in the head unit harness and the red wire that goes to the camera itself spliced to the blue/yellow wire going to the reverse light. there was no blue/brown wire to splice it to. Thanks in advance.

    • @BMWDIYGuy
      @BMWDIYGuy  6 років тому

      Yeah, you are having a trigger issue, where the reverse light isn't triggering the deck to realize its in reverse. I would check your connections, especially at the reverse wire at the head unit.

Someone from Bimmerfest, that goes by the name of "thehardcorps" said he would do a full DIY on the e38 with the new AVANT-3 unit, but he is not replying to my send. You may know of him if you are on Bimmerfest. I do look forward to your DIY.
