Another good Postmodern Jukebox number is "Creep" by Haley Reinhart. Elizabeth Zharoff has one of her "Tea Time" interviews with Morgan James over an hour long on her Charismatic Voice channel . They talk about Juilliard, broadway, etc.

The coolest thing about this is that she's not even stretching to do this. It's done in ONE TAKE for crying out loud. This is pretty much what you get with her live.

The "jazz cello" in the middle of this is the first time I've heard a cello player do that. Big kudos to Scott Bradley for his arrangement. Morgan's
voice is powerful, clear, and under total control. Her quick breathing between beats is is also quite amazing. Her covers of Joni Mitchell songs
are the best I've ever heard. She evidently liked so many of the songs on Joni's album, "Blue", she covered all of them. "River" and "A Case of You"
from the album always get to me. PMJ, Morgan, & two other singers you might like also do a great cover of Meghan Trainor's "It's All About the Bass"

You nailed it in your wrap up. For Morgan she can sing Dream On, or a duet with Haley for a Beatles classic, or a duet with Marc Broussard on a Soul classic song and still have the vocal chops to cover a Prince song. Check out her channel for more of her covers, including a full cover of the Beatles white album. She is a little vocal ball of energy.

Hands down, one of the very best I've ever heard. Especially when it comes to 20th century/contemporary American styles (Jazz, Blues, Gospel, etc). You mention the clarity, and that's what always struck me about her voice. She's like a warm, bluesy, high-intensity laser beam. Her projection in the upper midrange frequencies is just so good.

  • @dfhowes
    @dfhowes 2 роки тому +4

The first time I heard this cover I just couldn't get Steven Tyler's voice out of my head. It wasn't until I listened for the third time that I could truly appreciate Morgan's cover. Now it's my favorite!
I especially love listening to professionals like you react because I know next to nothing about music/vocalizing. When people like you explain what all is involved with her singing, it really helps me to better understand just how hard she works to keep her wonderful talent at it's peak like this. I sincerely appreciate you sharing like this.
I've been a BIG fan of Morgan for a few years now. Absolutely LOVE her!!!
As already mentioned several times here, Morgan studied opera at Julliard (her classical training is why she has those big pipes) and has performed on several Broadway plays including Motown: The Musical, The Addams Family, Godspell and Wonderland. She didn't appear in any of the talent shows because of the age limitation. While under the wing of Barry Gordy, she was signed with Epic Records and released two albums. Epic Records dropped her in part for the very reason you mentioned - they couldn't pigeon-hole her. Also in part because she wanted to release what SHE wanted, not be dictated by someone else. So she started her own band and is married to the guitar player, Doug Wamble and is now an indy under Hedonist Records LLC.
If I may suggest, check these songs from Morgan out as well.
Maps, Maroon 5 - This is probably my second favorite cover.
    ua-cam.com/video/8gO_lxThc1M/v-deo.html
All About That Bass, Meghan Trainor. This is where I first discovered Morgan James
    ua-cam.com/video/aLnZ1NQm2uk/v-deo.html
Call My Name, Prince - Prince rarely gives permission to record his songs but within 5 minutes of hearing Morgan's cover, he said yes.
    ua-cam.com/video/DhbS3BFtXDk/v-deo.html
Also, Spike Lee uses Morgan's You Thought Not on his series She's Gotta Have It.
    ua-cam.com/video/xCEarMTkG68/v-deo.html
Ain't No Way, Aretha Franklin - Morgan holds a note for an amazing 24 seconds @ 1:42 into the video. I get frisson every time I hear it!
    ua-cam.com/video/3qw9SjAYHEg/v-deo.html
And yet, still a couple more.
Who Wants to Live Forever, Queen
    ua-cam.com/video/7Ttx0gHKfY8/v-deo.html
Take Me to Church, Hozier -
    ua-cam.com/video/9C0xGB73Uuc/v-deo.html
And just for the fun of it, here's one that I recorded the first time I saw her live in concert at The Dakota Jazz Club in Minneapolis, MN doing her title track Reckless Abandon ua-cam.com/video/rAgYQj7bBes/v-deo.html
Morgan is one of the hardest workers in the industry. She's no one-trick pony. She doesn't just sing, she acts, runs her own recording business, travels world-wide to bring her unique talent to everybody and champions for minorities and females.
For example, Morgan dreamed that she performed Jesus Christ Superstar as Jesus and Shoshana Bean was Judas. She decided to put on an entire female production of JSC and started hand selecting some of the best vocalists, performers, musicians, producers and engineers in the business - all females. She put on a live concert at he the Highline Ballroom and later got Pledge Music involved to raise some money to produce the album. Unfortunately Pledge Music stole everyone's money and filed bankruptcy. In spite of all the financial problems, it took a few years but she stayed true to her very supportive fans and just recently still managed to release the entire album. Check out Gethsemane for a sample, you WILL be impressed!
    ua-cam.com/video/nuqVjC0XrkE/v-deo.html
So yeah, I'm a Morgan fan. Big time. Check her out at www.morganjamesonline.com/

Amazing reaction Bethany. I had not heard of Morgan James either until I came across this. Sultry is oozing all throughout this arrangement. She makes the lyrics so much more powerful. I think for the first time hearing this song I actually understood the meaning more deeply because her tone is mesmerizing and I found myself hanging on every note. I hope she continues to do JAZZ because she is born for it. Your appreciation of her talent was also a pleasure to watch.

Morgan's Broadway credits include The Addams Family in 2010, Wonderland in 2011, the revival of Godspell in 2012, and under the watchful eye of Barry Gordy, created the role of Teena Marie in Motown, The Musical. She also has a silly side, producing a podcast called "Gettin' Peggy Wit It" where she has fun "interviewing" various industry professionals. Thoroughly enjoyed your reaction to Dream On, too. She shares the top spot with Haley Reinhart, I can't pick a favorite between them. Of course, you should do more reactions to Morgan James, but you really should react to Haley Reinhart with PMJ. Thank you for a great breakdown, you really do a great job of blending your musical knowledge, excitement and intrigue, plus your beauty and smile are like a cherry on top.

nice reaction bethany. morgan james is an amazing singer and performer and fits perfectly with the postmodern jukebox (i.e. pmj) family. she quickly makes herself known with that intro belt in "all about the bass". however, this performance takes her to another level and is her best one... imho. the string arrangement is also superb. the way the guy on the cello plucks it like a guitar after her first run is super cool (never seen that before). if you want to check another great pmj vocalist, i highly recommend "creep" which maybe one the best covers ever done.

Morgan trained at Juilliard for opera. She is a multi genre singer. She has also done broadway. Her real wheelhouse is soul.

Because Morgan James is always worth re-kindling in a feed.... You should absolutely check out her cover of the album "Grace" by Jeff Buckley - if not, just the song "Grace". You talk about not pigeon-holing someone into a style which is absolutely true - similar to Jeff Buckley. Her cover of that album is a beautiful homage that captures sorrow and soul-shaking goodness.

Yep, PMJ's Creep feat Hailey Reinhart is gonna blow you away. It should be your next react. This is a good rearrangement of the original and Morgan's performance is somehow a bit reminiscent of Steven Tyler's original vocal. That Hailey, though. Another performance from a musical theater alumna that you might enjoy is Shoshana Bean singing Make It Rain, live at The Theatre At Ace Hotel. Blues for days.

Morgan is the Cover Queen, some of her more obscure songs are great, as they are in a home sitting, one that comes to mind is "Rather Be". There are a multitude of choices, for sure you will be entertained!!!

Morgan James' Broadway career has definitely leaned more towards what would be considered rock musicals than more "traditional" musical theatre. Her most significant role was being part of the original cast of "Motown: The Musical", when she played R&B singer Teena Marie. So, yeah, she is not what you might consider a "run-of-the-mill" Broadway-style singer.

She is one of the gems you can find thx to YT and just appritite.
As for experssivity I just love your reactions, your face just tells everything. There are some who watch everything with stoned face, motionless then express their feelings. You are the opposite.
And of course you always point out thing I didn't know even existed, these are the two reasons i'm sub here. Also hope you will find inspiration watching these completly different amazing singers, and their completly different perfect (and perfectly imperfect by choosing flawed notes/sounds to express emotion, convey message properly) approaches to songs.
Recommendation: as many others will point it out you should definately also get familiar with Haley Reinhart's PMJ covers, many like the song Creep, but personally I prefer
Postmodern Jukebox & Haley Reinhart "Seven Nation Army"
better, as in for my deaf ears she is just as versatile and expressive in that song as in the other one but the song itself is better, and already has 48M views (yep creep doubled that :O ).
