  • I tear down a set of brick steps and rebuild with a different size brick and limestone thread. All my videos are my ways and ideas, I always suggest anyone doing any type of work to consult professional help.

I watch so many of your videos and learn a lot. I really like your historical perspective on how things used to be done and how they're done now. I watch so many of your videos that my wife is even saying "no big deal" and I say "we're not gonna win any trophies here." and "comprendes?" I've parged a few walls now and like the work.

More than 40 years ago I got a huge amount of practical training by working summers for my grandfather who owned a small business. He was a big proponent of “patterns” and even to use the same board as a pattern and keep it separate from the copies. That might be why your videos feel like a continuation of Gpa’s training. Except we are about the same age and your training is a lot more fun ! And it’s a lot easier watching vs trying to actually perform the task while being watched and coached. But your videos gave me the confidence to start working with the premixed concrete. I can only wish the results would be as good as yours.... but twill do. Thank you for sharing what you know and keeping it as simple as possible for us newbies !

Hey Mike ,love the finish of your work .Instead of using the cardboard why not get your height and divide by number of steps .
You will get your risers to work that way .The same with the treads distance in from the first riser to the top of the last riser ,then divide by how many steps to suit your stone treads .Always keeping even risers and treads .
It works trust me ive been a bricklayer for 35 years .Id like to do some steps with you but its a bit of a hike to the states from uk

Hi Mike, down here in Alabama the mortar lasts quite a bit longer than it would in Pennsylvania. However,I do get ALOT of calls for pointing up steps (usually where full joints were not used to begin with). The joint on the third brick will crack ,sometimes all the way up and down the set of steps before anything else. Great video!
