Mike, I just want to say as a new almost 22 year old homeowner, you have helped a ton! Had to remortar some headjoints on a block foundation thats roughly 25 years old and now am wanting to parge the exterior after i dig down some to get more contact. You have been a big source of information for young and old viewers. Thank you so much.
Hi Mike. I've used a very similar formulation for almost 20 years. The cost of driveway sealers have doubled since pre-pandemic, but sealer is still reasonable for a 5 gallon bucket. However, you can quickly escalate the cost of driveway repair with specialty crack and depression fillers. I only use an acrylic, water based, sealer emulsion. I remove 1 gallon of sealer from the pail and add 4 scoops (2 cup scoop) of clean, washed sand and a scoop of Portland cement. The Portland seems to react well, since the sealer is water based. This is my mix for the surface sealer, which dries rock hard with a non-slip surface. Increasing the volume of sand and Portland can be mixed to a very firm mixture to fill large cracks or holes and a sloppier mix will fill the small 1/8" cracks and can be floated to fill depressions. No specialty crack fillers or depression fillers required. I re-do my driveway about every 3 years, since it was installed in 1958. When renewed and sealed, neighbors out walking their dogs stop to ask who I had to replace the driveway and the cost. They are shocked to learn that it's the original 1958 driveway (14 ft. X 95 ft.)
So nice to get a notification that you had posted a video Mike. Great job as always . The people there hit lucky to have Mike Haddock as their neighbor. Glad you’re keeping well and look after yourself 🤜🤛. PS. No big deal.
Hi Mike! When I was a kid growing up in North Carolina the road crews came around and sprayed the roads with tar and spread sand on top. Nice job Mike.
Great Video! On my parents residential driveway. I used rapid set cement to cover a low spot that a water valve cover was. I filled other cracks too with the rapid set cement. It covered well the sealer. I learned the uses of Rapid Set products from watching Mr. Haducks videos. Thank you very much from upstate New York& God Bless.
You've taught me so much about concrete Repair, now I can help you. Next time go to home depot, menards lowes what ever, get a mixing drill fill a bucket 2/3rd with sealer and as your spinning the seal pour in slowly Grey or black poly meric sand it will dry like a flexible gel concrete and will dry black. I love you are still doing videos, Mike. If you're ever in the chicago area, please let me take you to dinner. I owe you for what You've taught me.
@tonymanero5544 about 15 minutes max, will be hard in 20 to 25 max depending on sun and temperature maybe sooner, another trick is mix green bag rapid set concrete with sealer instead of water, gives you a super fast patch like 5 minute work time, that when fades or chips is still black. Polymeric sand is still better option for cracks because of flexibility, at least here in Chicago

Hello Mike, I finished slurring my concrete driveway up north it came out excellent, many that walk buy asked me when did I replace the concrete, I told them it’s a slurry. Here’s my formula…. used a 10 qt pail full of 100% portland cement, used 1 qt of white playsand, and 2 qts of masons hydrated lime, mix dry, then added 1 qt of white acrylic bonding agent and about 2 qt of water, mix well, could be a very loose slurry, may have to sprinkle a hand full of cement before applying to the surface. Use a squeegee horizontally to the driveway to apply, this should fill minor chips in the concrete, don’t be concerned about excess slurry when squeegeeing because before making another pass, use a 24” wide light bristle street broom and brush out lightly the slurry, this will help fill in depressions and leave a broom finish that will look like a brand new concrete poured driveway, right after your complete and able to walk on the surface, use a flat edge shovel and knock down all high snots (yes snots) in the slurry, don’t worry you’re just smoothing it out. Then I used a leaf blower to blow all the dust away, let sit for 3 days, then apply a concrete clear gloss Dutchboy solvent sealer with a 9” roller, let set for 72hrs before driving on it. can walk on it much sooner. I would like to send you some pictures let me know how. Thanks from a guy like you that work construction for 40 yrs.
"Asphalt Mike's" Road Sealer.... What is up you old sea dog..... Good to see your hands are not idle.... NO NOT THAT WAY... YOU CRAZY SAILOR... Nice work on that private road. Looks like you have helper crew! GOD BLESS BROTHER ... ERNIE...
Great video Mike! I will try it out on the cracks at the end of my driveway. Looks like your mixture will adhere well and blend much smoother than a standard asphalt patch mix. Thanks!
Good job as always, Mike. Those neighborhoods without curbs don't look good. Developers try to save money not doing the curbs and then the road is almost flush with the driveways. I've seen that in Miami. No clear barrier between cars and houses.
i bought a block of the crack sealer that they put in a heated machine and pour into cracks, and it is nice that modified asphalt that is rubbery, but it is a pain to sit there melting the block and troweling it into cracks and such the good part is there is no drying time it is good after it cools back down to room temperature. this looks like a lot easier method of filling in larger cracks and such because the sealer is kind of watery by itself. I thought you went to Florida to retire not switch to paving driveways down there LOL
That's what I use as well. It's basically a big block of tar. My trick is to heat it up and melt parts of it in an old cast iron skillet on a large propane burner (for deep frying turkey/clam bakes.) The goal is mostly to glob it on pouring it out of the pan, then you can get it to fill better/flatten out with a regular weed burning torch. Messy job, but that stuff works better than any of the goop they sell at the hardware store, which is why the real road crews use it. Driveway sealer is basically just paint for your driveway. Pretty much a snakeoil scam.
I've also had good results using a standard cold patch asphalt mixture, tamping it into cracks or small holes and hitting it with a propane torch to heat, melt and improve the bond.
@@bnasty267driveway sealer is like wax on car paint. The sealer is a sacrificial layer for the sun and weather to wash away. If you have cracks, sealer can cover the crack interior to keep water from seeping in and soften the foundation. See all those driveways where the sealant has worn out; they are gray color because the asphalt has washed away exposing the top stone edges. A sealer is the layer that gets washed away, and then replacing it so it fills the valleys and cover the surface stones. With proper prep work, the sealer will adhere and last 5-10 years.
Hi Mike! Do you think that will work up here in Pennsylvania? Cause you know what works in Florida won’t work……..oh, you know. Love your videos and thanks for making all the great content. Mark
I gotta hurry up and file for the Mike Haduck's Something or Other trademark. It looks awfully palmy where you did this so I'm not sure I'm going to give this the North Country New York test it deserves, although for the sake of science or something I suppose it might be worth trying. Thanks for the very enjoyable video, you took the chill out of a dark and chilly night. Or put the chill into one...or something.
I've tried every product on the market. None of them work, just tried the pli stix last year, yet to be seen how well it holds up, almost one season now, thinking we can remelt it with the flame torch if the cracks separated. It is flexible and seemed to keep out the water when it was fresh. Wasn't so easy to do though as we used three 50' packages. It's about time someone makes something that will level out the cracks. Looking forward to your patent and product, let us know as soon as it's on the market please. (hopefully your base bonding mix too) Always wished they made cold patch to match the asphalt rocks to look the same too. If you've ever patched a hole with it, I think everyone wonders why they haven't yet. Used another product that was like black cement, I was so hopeful, it dried harder than the asphalt, it looked nice but then it pushed broke up the asphalt around it, having a steep sloped driveway doesn't help either... same theory as making the mortar softer than the brick for the fail point... it did work on the hill like burm edging the sides to build up the low spots or around the grated drainage, but thats about it. You took way too long to come up with this solution. It’s about time you have a repair for asphalt. I wanna see you mix in some aggregate for pot holes or larger repairs next. Great job!
Mike you have been a wealth of information for me. Thanks! Hey I just did a concrete pour of a porch with six steps. Turned out really well except I have two spots with honeycombing. What works best to repair honeycombing on new concrete? Thanks
Hi Dave. I just get some Portland, dampen the honeycomb first and rub it in with a sponge float or sponge, It works for me, I show it on my concrete repair videos, thanks Mike
Mike - this is a innovative solution. Do you think this same method would work for quick repair in NY/PA? I realize we can use cold patch but I think this would work well for other applications. Curious on your thoughts. I think I will try this in the spring. Thanks again for the great video!! - Lucas
Mike, I’m trying to fix my exposed aggregate driveway. Can this be overlayed to fix the concrete in between the exposed rocks? Can you make a video if given the opportunity?
I used the video and painted my aggregate driveway with Portland! Worked beautifully. I did the sides in white Portland and the middle in regular Portland to give it a modern look. Thanks for the videos, certainly helps keep costs down. The quotes I received were insane.
Freaking genius!! Thank you Mikey-I sure am glad you never were able to finish law school otherwise we all wouldn’t be getting this great advise…and your music, though a little klesmatic is not too bad either 😁
Hey Mike! I have watched MANY of your concrete videos & have learned so much! Love me some mud!! LOL. I have a question for asphalt driveway in Northern NJ climates. My asphalt driveway (approx. 20 years old-in good shape). I have a large 2-3" driveway crack spanning the width of my asphalt driveway that turned into a "Y" (smaller cracks). It's been filled 3 years ago before sealcoating but the crack appears to be "Growing". What is the best material to use for repairing this? Do I hire an asphalt company to repair or is this something of a DIY project? Thanks in advance for your help with this Mike 😃
I'd love to test this up here near the salt belt. Curious how it would hold up. I've seen latex sealer last quite a few years so this just might work....
Mike I have a question unrelated to this video...I'll be forming a shower pan on concrete in my basement...then sealing it with a product called red guard..my question could I use mason mix for this pan..I'll form with a slope to drain? Should I add more sand? Any input from you would be greatly appreciated...your videos are great
Hi , they usually make a pan for that you can tile over, , I would think a lot depends on the thickness, where, why, etc. I would ask around, thanks mike
Hi Mike, I wonder can I use the play sand and asphalt, using the bonder as you show, to fill fairly large dips from heaves? The town had apparently make the road higher and higher before we bought this place but it's an asphalt road not concrete. So I'm wondering if this will stick to deeper voids? Thank you in advance.
Mike Where do I buy all the materials you are using. My drive way isn’t big enough to warrant a professional to repair it as it would cost me a fortune. I would think I only need a bag of sand and a barrel of the sealer. Hope you can help Thanks
Hi John, we have and haven't had any problems but we gave it a lot of dry time, if the whole was too big we use regular patch first and then go over it, thanks Mike
Cement or mortar side by side with asphalt don't work well together, especially in cold climates, because the two materials expand and contract at different rates.
@MikeHaduck how long would you recommend waiting after the application to know if it works? I have some cracks on our asphalt ranging from 1/8" wide to 2" x 3" deep.
Hi Mike I really appreciate your concrete videos I don’t know a lot about concrete but I’m really contemplating on getting into 3/D concrete printing houses so that’s how I found you. I have been a asphalt layer for about 22 years down in Nevada and up in Washington state. I got a kick out of your mix and I really appreciate your extent of crack filling and I hope you make a good bit on your patent of it. After cleaning with a blower or broom we but down SS1 and call it tack I don’t think the other name is appropriate here . After it sets up then we paved it . We always used this rubbish oil heated up and put sand on it then you set for a few days and then you sweep it up. But I was going to tell you we always have a five gallon tank of propane and a weed burner to heat up if things are too high rake it down and use a hand tamper for some compaction but the burner is always your friend. I hope you the best and I really appreciate your videos. Thank you very much man.
Ha. Mike is high in the Big Five Personality factor called Consciousness- in other words he cant stand being idle, he has to do some work regularly to stay happy.
@@MikeHaduck so much is done with seal coat. Your mix with sand on cracks and medium size filling is great. Seal coat looks good but like the painted stripes in a parking lot you see they sit proud of the surface . The coating protects against wear down. It needs to be done. Crack fillers are expensive and don’t work as well as your sand mix.Love your video’s.

I'm sure i watched this video about a year ago.. Looks like it came out great.. I hope the driveway is still holding up well..💯🎥🎬🎶👍👌✌️😎⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐🇺🇲
Thanks David, so far good, Mike
Hi Msheart, I can't say unless I seen it, maybe do a little experimenting, they do have choices at the box stores, thanks Mike
SealMaster Gator Pave - trowable crack repair. Available from any SealMaster dealer.
They stole my idea? Lol thanks buck, Mike
Hello Mike, do you have any recommendations on sealing a concrete slab that has water seeping through from the ground? Thank you.
Hi Jah, I would first find a way to get the water away from the slab, thanks Mike
Mike
Where do I buy all the materials you are using.
My drive way isn’t big enough to warrant a professional to repair it as it would cost me a fortune.
I would think I only need a bag of sand and a barrel of the sealer.
Hope you can help
Thanks
Hi, usually any hardware store has the sealer and play sand, thanks, Mike
Sand Mix Driveway Filler Sealant by Latex-ite sold at HD.
They stole my idea? Lol, thanks Mike
Now try to get your earnings from the sell of the product.lol@@MikeHaduck
Mike does the mixture have any compressive strength? Could you use it to fill a small pothole in a driveway?
Hi John, we have and haven't had any problems but we gave it a lot of dry time, if the whole was too big we use regular patch first and then go over it, thanks Mike
Hi Mike! Do you think cement could have worked to do the cracks and then you seal like you did at the end and it all looks one shade of black?
Cement or mortar side by side with asphalt don't work well together, especially in cold climates, because the two materials expand and contract at different rates.
Hi juliet, no, I would use the asphalt repair as it's more flexable and forgiving, my opinion, Mike
First ...top man Mike..peace n love from Cumbria UK ❤🇬🇧
Thanks UK, Mike
Would this work for fixing gator cracks?
Hi rob, I just show what I used it for and what worked for me, thanks Mike
dam was that hank hill talking in the back ground there ?
Hi Chris, maybe, Mike
You made driveway patching " no big deal!"
Thanks Todd, Mike
Hi. Does this works with all cracks sizes?
Hi Bao, I would do some experimenting to see what works for you, Thanks Mike
Thanks Robert, I need more to learn on asphalt, so thanks Mike
Not looking too retired LOL!!
Thanks Sue, they put me to work, lol, Mike
Ha. Mike is high in the Big Five Personality factor called Consciousness- in other words he cant stand being idle, he has to do some work regularly to stay happy.
What are you pouring into the sand?
Hi Ana, it's just the black top sealer. Same thing you coat the blacktop driveways with, thanks Mike
@@MikeHaduck Thank you! I love your videos! I have already completed several projects and I would have never tried without you.
Old school
Thanks again, Mike
Looks like your next door
Thanks yeehaw, Mike
@@MikeHaduck so much is done with seal coat. Your mix with sand on cracks and medium size filling is great. Seal coat looks good but like the painted stripes in a parking lot you see they sit proud of the surface . The coating protects against wear down. It needs to be done. Crack fillers are expensive and don’t work as well as your sand mix.Love your video’s.
I live in NY and that water base driveway sealer is garbage. We can't buy oilbase sealer anymore and it's very frustrating.
Hi, it's the way it is, thanks Mike

Hi Dan, they will be down sometime in the winter, Thanks, Mike
You say now; no big deal
Thanks again, no big deal, just patches, thanks, Mike
I've seen you work with lime and Portland but never the black stuff. It's nasty, huh?
Hi robot,,, every now and then but nothing this size, Mike
No no no Mike. We don't do asphalt. Don't ya know. If you don't use Concrete, it's your own asphalt
Thanks, Mike
No big deal
Thanks, Mike
Big Mike on the job!! I didn't know there was a water-based asphalt sealer. I love the look of an asphalt driveway more than concrete. Are you living in Florida now?
Hi yoga. Yep, Florida resident now, Thanks Mike
