Hey man! Such a big fan of the a6500! I use the a6300 for all of my UA-cam videos. I love that someone else’s sees the huge benefit of these mighty little cameras! Keep it up mate!
Oh heck yeah! The a6300 and a6500 are still great cams! Honestly I'm even considering getting the a6600 to replace my a7s cause I like them so much! Keep rocking it with the smaller cams dude!
Nice and stable camera setup. I have a rig as well but with the GH5. Its working great for me so far. I havent looked into sony cameras too much, but im sure they are great cameras.
Thanks Max! Yeah, the GH5 is an awesome camera-it packs a serious punch and at such a good price. Sony has great cameras as well, honestly though it's more about the skills behind the camera than the camera itself usually.
I was inspired by this, and did much the same with my own A6500. So, many thanks. The result looks awesome. But I did find some limitations that I had to get around: 1. Even with the lightest of V-mount batteries, this thing is HEAVY, and weighted towards the back. It was fine on a tripod, which is how I plan mainly to use it. But I would probably not want to use it hand-held unless I were Jack Reacher. I have 2 classic video cameras that I can use for that anyway. 2. With the V-Mount battery's covering the back of the camera as you have there, it is nigh-on impossible to use the camera's own LCD or viewfinder. And with the A6500, you need that LCD. There are several touch screen features you need on there, plus the A6500 will not display camera settings on an HDMI external monitor like my Ninja V. I tried having the LCD set horizontally, but that worked only in ideal conditions. In the end, I remounted the battery hanging down below the rig, and as far back as possible to avoid snagging the tripod on a tilt or pan.
awesome, sounds like you ended up building a really great rig for your a6500! Yes--using v-mount batteries always adds A LOT of weight, however it also adds a lot of stability when doing handheld work. It does make it so you have to balance your tripod head a little bit different but you get used to it. As far as the LCD goes--yes, it definitely sucks having it covered up. What I usually do is just end up scooting the battery back far enough so I can clearly see it and tap on it when needed.
What if you want the nd throttle to use with a Sony 10-18mm lens with the A6600 Does that only come as an adapter for the canon lenses? Loved the video and setup.
Texas Best Construction unfortunately you can’t use the ND throttle with native Sony lenses. It can only be used to adapt other lenses because it puts space between the lens and the body, whereas Sony lenses can’t do that. You just have to use screw on Nd filters or a matte box with Sony glass
im new so idk if you did this, but you should make a short film with one of these rigs because they look awesome so i would like to see the amazing content they can make.
Nice rig, i might consider building it for my A6500 which is now my b-cam and doesn't look professional at all. I'd just change the battery for a NP-F 970 ; i'm pretty sure this would make it more convenient and should supply enough power
Yeah, rigging out the a6500 definitely helps it look much more professional on set, not to mention it's just more useful. The larger Sony NPF batteries will certainly supply enough power for longer shoots. What's your A Cam now?

*types in smallrig on amazon* thanks man, I've just been using my a6400 with my ronin SC and it just feels so fake. Gonna slowly get pretty much this kit my sony now, appreciate the video!
lol! Yeah, I've spent A LOT of money on SmallRig parts over the years. You can still get amazing footage with the a6400 and a gimbal, but for certain setups, having it built out can be helpful too.
i'm watching this video and i'm saying This guy looks familiar then i get to the end of the video where you talked about the a7s rig and it clicks.. Oh That's where i know him from.. I just saved your A7S rig video because i loved the look of that setup..
Have you had any problems using a follow focus on lenses mounted to a dslr? I seem to be getting slight movement on the lens both up and down when pulling focus on my rig. I've ended up getting a lens support with a strap around the top. Seems to work but is taking up useful space on the 15mm rails.
Owen Simpson yes, depending on the camera and cage I’m using, the focus motor will shift the lens up and down some. With my A7s it was the worse. But with my Pocket 6k and X-T4 it really doesn’t move. Take a look at your cage and base connections to see where it’s giving and allowing it to move. The lens support might just be necessary for your rig!
Nasar Salman nope, no reason in specific, but keeping them going through different ports could help prevent anything being fried, I’ve heard reports of cameras frying from thing powered off the same source
What about the "crop factor" from the full-frame lens on an APS-C sensor? Was reading a bit about it and, correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't the 50mm basically end up looking like a 75mm on the camera? So it wont be a "nifty 50" anymore?
Why do you use an atmos ninja V? I have a sony a6300 and a sony fs5 and I am thinking of getting an external recorder so I can up the frame rate and film in 10bit.
Spicer Productions I use it with the a6500 just to get pro Res, it doesn’t do anything else on that cam. But with my X-T4 it’s amazing 10bit 60FPS 4k. I’d recommend only getting the ninja if it can really improve the image quality with your cam. So might be good for the FS5

I almost feel like I should make a video when I get all of my parts in since you kinda inspired this for my next gig. I'm rigging up my A7iii, and wanted to have both a Atomos Shinobi and a Aputure F7 on the rig simultaneously. Using the "SmallRig NATO Top Handle HTN2439" on top of their cage (with a NATO rail), I'm gonna use the BUM2448 Arm in the front of the handle like you did for your monitor, then the BSE2346 Monitor mount right behind that in the coldshoe for the Shinobi. Then in the second coldshoe on the end of the handle I'll hang my Rode Wireless GO. I'm using the same baseplate to rig Gold Mount batteries.
Daniel von Seckendorff that’s awesome. Sounds like you have a really cool rig planned out for your a7iii. If you make a vid all about it, def share it with me
Sujan Gurung the a6500 can’t shoot 4k 60fps unfortunately so no. The ninja v can usually only record what the camera is capable of. You can with the X-T4, I just started using 6k 60fps with it
The battery you recommend is no longer available. I bought a Powerextra BP-190. It's similar to the one you recommend but did not come with a charger. How do you charge a v-mount battery? Thanks again.
Awesome! I have something similar going on with my a6500, put powered the camera from the monitor with an NPF battery. Downside? The weight of the 970NPF battery broke the mounting screw on my cheap FeelWorld monitor :(
Very Nice! I've considered powering the rig off of NPF batteries before, but was always concerned about it being off balance or too heavy up front. So, that's crazy it broke on you! Bummer.
Susan Bruno I press record on the ninja v or camera and then get my grip all situated to shoot. Some newer top handles and side grips have a record button built in that work with some cameras
Thanks for watching! And yeah, I actually saw a clip from one of my reviews on Amazon. That happens every once and a while where I'll see that. Doesn't bother me though. Thanks for the heads up!
@@chadwin Thanks, I just got a a6600 for 1k new on Craigslist..too good to pass up. Thinking about building a rig like this but I think the 24mm would be better for that 35mm equivalent field of view.
Looking nice! But what if you need to use a stabilizer or smth (if you’re running for example or so), then how may it work out all together? And how much approximately does it weight? 💎
Ivan Pchelintsev it definitely can’t balance on a small gimbal. But it could be balanced on a steadicam. Typically I quick release it off the rails to put it on my gimbal. Weights around 5lbs or so
Jonathan Richey you can add a little cold shoe mount to the side of the cage to mount a mic. Truth be told I never use shotgun mics cause I only need scratch audio for syncing to my boom audio. If I do use a mic on camera it’s a LAV
Thank you so much for this wonderful rig setup!!! Can we mount this whole rig on a tripod fluid head? Do we need an additional adapter? Do you recommend any type and a brand of bag that can hold all of this rig while commuting/travelling?
Nasar Salman no problem, thanks for watching!! Yes, you can just put a QR plate for your tripod on the bottom of the Basel plate and throw it on to your tripod. Best bags for fulls rigs like this are from Tenba. Just search them on Amazon
I see a lot of 14.8V connections for batteries, are these more for higher end cameras like URSA’s or RED’s that need more power? Is that 8V thing you’re specifying specific to smaller cameras like the sony? I’m just wondering because I’m on an a6500 now, but I plan on going BMPCC 6k in the next 6 months or so, and URSA G2 in like a year, so I wanna buy gear now thats as universal and future proof as it can possibly be, even if it means getting stuff thats a little overkill at the moment
Ava Greyson Productions yeah! I’m using the Fotodiox Vizelex VND filter adapter. It’s linked in the description, but looks like it’s out of stock on Amazon right now.
Mr. & Mrs. Williams I wouldn’t actually choose one over the other. I definitely use a gimbal and the handheld rig. The good thing is, since it has a quick release plate I can pull it off the rails and throw it right on my gimbal.
You know that was actually one of my worries; taking it all apart to not use the rig. I guess I wasn’t paying close enough attention 🤦🏾♂️. I definitely think I want to build one because it looks cool!
@@MrWayne-cb9tp Yeah, it's definitely nice to have a rig like this for certain bigger client shoots. I do break it down when I need to, just depends on the work I'm doing. It doesn't take much to breakdown for the gimbal, but it will take a few minutes.
Great setup! But... how do you take S&Q 120fps slomo with the Atomos Ninja V attached? When I tried to do so, I always got the camera monitor display info icons in the footage :-(
Hi, congratulations on the great channel and content. How about the performance of the Ninja V with the Sony A6500. Is it worth it to record at 60 fps or just to use it as a monitor?
Macanche Producciones hey thanks!! I don’t typically record to the Ninja V with my a6500 cause it can already do 4k internally but sometimes I do. The bummer is you can only do 60 FPS at 1080p internally or on the Ninja, it doesn’t make a difference or allow 4k 60.
Cahayamata Studio yeah, you’re 100% correct. ProRes edits way faster in FCPX cause it doesn’t have to transcode. I do shoot in it when I can, but man those files sizes. I’m filling up so many hard drives these days
I am trying to make my new to me used Canon M10 into a micro Cinema Rig. Can you do a super cheap build on it? Ideas? I want something that I can use as a Cinema/Photography rig.
The correct port should actually have a small Camera icon next to it. It should be an 8v port for most cameras. and DO NOT plug into 12v unless you wanna fry your camera...haha

No. You can do that with the Pocket 4k/6k and Z Cams, but not the Sony cams. You need an external recorder like the Atomos Ninja V
Any suggestions for a lumix gx85?
Thanks for the info bro! Not sure if you knew, but that comer d tap v mount battery is using your clip from youtube on their amazon page.
Thanks for watching! And yeah, I actually saw a clip from one of my reviews on Amazon. That happens every once and a while where I'll see that. Doesn't bother me though. Thanks for the heads up!
The title took me out 😂. Wannabe... I’m here for it.
Definitely doing this with my a6300! Great little setup
Kris Dekker yeah it will work great with your a6300 for sure!!
Could I throw a Matte Box on the front and instead use 16in 15mm rods to mimic the aS7 setup? Love your content dude, keep it up!
yes, you can definitely use longer rails and add a matte box with this setup! Thanks for watching!
So this 50mm on a crop cam like this Sony will be 75mm FF equivalent?
Yeah, exactly! I forgot to mention the crop factor. I have many lenses though and also use the 24mm and 16mm rokinon lenses on my a6500.
@@chadwin Thanks, I just got a a6600 for 1k new on Craigslist..too good to pass up. Thinking about building a rig like this but I think the 24mm would be better for that 35mm equivalent field of view.
Andrew Freeman that’s a really good deal! I’ve been wanting to get the a6600 used also! Yes the 24mm would be a great option for basic field of view.
Weights around 5lbs or so
So how/where would you mount a Rode shotgun mic for audio? Great video though, this is exactly what I'm looking to build out.
Jonathan Richey you can add a little cold shoe mount to the side of the cage to mount a mic. Truth be told I never use shotgun mics cause I only need scratch audio for syncing to my boom audio. If I do use a mic on camera it’s a LAV
Does he have sample footage?
How much u spent to build this ...bro... please tell me...
I'm not totally sure cause I haven't added it up. probably around 3,500
Chadwin Smith thank you so much for the generous information!
Thank you for this video.
I cant find the Battery eliminator thing. Can you link it?
JoshDidItt the battery eliminator actually comes with the ninja V, no need to buy it separately
Would this build be applicable to a sony a6400?
Martin Tjandi yes, it would definitely work!
Ohhh you said 8V OR LOWER, as in its ok to plug it into 7.something port?
Thanks so much for this! Wonder what brand of Sony to Canon w/ND adapter you found?
Ava Greyson Productions yeah! I’m using the Fotodiox Vizelex VND filter adapter. It’s linked in the description, but looks like it’s out of stock on Amazon right now.
What about the weight...is it heavy..?
Yes. It’s much heavier. But this helps a lot to stabilize handheld work.
This is very interesting and cool build! I do have a question; why this over a gimbal?
Mr.
Just needs a follow focus and boom
curvy pig check out this rig with the follow focus! ua-cam.com/video/EL_eoU1vkSY/v-deo.html
You can def add a mic if you need an onboard mic
Thank you so much
That's super
Hey thanks man!
Link for the dummy battery for a6500??
I’m gonna do this with my 6400!
Toney Franco heck yeah, do it!
Same! I noticed that the camera dummy battery is not listed in the description. Is there an alternative if that particular one doesn't exist anymore?
Great setup! But... how do you take S&Q 120fps slomo with the Atomos Ninja V attached? When I tried to do so, I always got the camera monitor display info icons in the footage :-(
Rolf Scheffer the ninja v cannot record 120p. It maxes out at 60p unfortunately....
@@chadwin but u can record prores with it where files can be edit friendly.. just need to deal with bigger files size
Ideas? I want something that I can use as a Cinema/Photography rig.
now, how can i do this with my "IPHONE"
YoungBlaze movi freefly, anamorphic lense, rode mic, counter weights
Va bene anche per 6400?
Hey, do you have a link for a charger to the battery? Been looking everywhere but can’t seem to find one! Thanks
Man if that battery somehow went behind the monitor that would be clutch
JayJs yeah, luckily If you put the battery back far enough, you can still see the LCD SCREEN
Good info but doesn’t using canon lenses autofocus ability?
Hey Chadwin, great video. I was just wondering why you cant just plug in the sony dummy battery to dtap straight into the Vmount Battery? Thanks
So do you forgo the gimball altogether? How does this interact with a gimball?
What is the weight of this setup?
Hi I bought a fotga v plate and the lowest voltage it powers is 5v, is it safe to connect my camera to that port?
The correct port should actually have a small Camera icon next to it. It should be an 8v port for most cameras. and DO NOT plug into 12v unless you wanna fry your camera...haha
I have the feelworld MA5 monitor, what cabels do I need so I can power it with the v-mount battery?
Ronald Kalangi I believe it’s a 12v barrel connection. Double check the port and manual first tho
Thanks 😎🙏
