Majority of the Espadas got done dirty in Arrancar Arc tbh, the only ones that got to showcase their fullest potential are Grimmjow, Ulquiorra and Granz. The rest got beat by either a bad matchup or just got beat by the plot especially The top 3 Espadas

Kubo done Starrk dirty by killing him after one fight. And a fight he didn't was on 100% of his mind on it plus one foght that 2 of strongest captains and 2 buffed by hollow mask former captains. He was insanely strong, but this sensation wasn't fully transmitted for the public.
That's what I've been saying. Everyone saying Ulquiorra's Segunda was stronger, but we never even saw Starrk *_really_* try. He took heavy direct hits from 2 Captain Class Vizard and decided he was safe enough to *_take a nap._* Same with Harribel. She fought a Captain, and 2 Vizard that became Captain Class when using Shikai and Hollowfication in tandem. She was fighting 3 Captain Class enemies at the same time, and she was bored.

But it made sense for his character, starkk is the strongest, but his strength isolated him from everybody else, even after he split himself, he will still too strong At that point he didn't want to fight, let alone win or kill
It's also very uncharacteristic for him to fall to the most obvious trap that killed him. But perhaps it still made sense for him to lose his analytical skills since Lilynette's death made him emotionally distressed.
Also need to apply a similiar to the starrk take to everyone: They were not motivated. Look at Grimmjow and Nnoitra fighting, they wanted to fight, they gave it their all, not just because they shouted a lot but because they seek the fight, and look how hard they hit their opponents, just unfortunatley for them they got the worst match ups
Uh Grimmjow & Nnoitora fight like that because of their particular aspects of death. As far their matches go, pretty sure Grimmjow's fight with Ichigo was fair.
He didn't know shunsui bankai and second he for the first time he saw yama bankai was in tybw at the end and he didn't even know about his true bankai Gotei 13>espada
You make a compelling point about the true potential of the Vasto Lorde-class Hollows. It feels like their power has been somewhat underappreciated, especially considering their pre-Espada form is already above most captains. The fact that their Resurrection could destroy Las Noches hints at a destructive force we never fully witnessed. Barragan's defeat by his own ability, Starrk barely breaking a sweat, and Harribel dominating Hitsugaya before even releasing-these are massive indicators of just how dangerous they were. It's almost like we’ve only scratched the surface of what Vasto Lorde Espadas could have unleashed if given more space.
Kubo definitely didn't let Arrancar live up to their hype, but I think it could also be said that it's a difference of raw power vs skill. Sure, the Vasto Lordes were alive for a long time and each had some degree of control over their abilities, but it wasn't until Aizen showed up that they were able to become as advanced as the Espada. Even that didn't allow them to fully explore or train their abilities to their absolute limits. Ulqiorra's 2nd form showed that pretty clearly, where his power was incredible but his mastery over it wasn't very good. Even if they were stronger than the average captain of the Gotei 13 in terms of sheer power, their inability to effectively train their skills or fall back upon the wealth of knowledge that the Soul Society had made them bad matchups against most captains who had access to both more tools, better training, and more options. Against an enemy who they couldn't simply overwhelm with sheer power, the Espada were found lacking in every respect. Ichigo is kinda in a similar boat himself, being forced to rely almost exclusively on his absurdly high innate spiritual energy and brute force his enemies down because he lacks both the tools and the knowledge base to effectively win via strategy most of the time (fight IQ being a bit different than actual strategy).
I think the main reason of why most Espadas didn't live up their hype is because they are not the main antagonist of the arc. Kubo's main focus was to make Aizen as threatening as possble. He is the big bad guy. And so, Epsadas' role were mere mid bosses. Which is such a shame because they are my favorite faction of the series.
The thing that makes Arrancar seem weak, is the fact that literally not a single names soul reaper died fighting them. With the Quincy you can see their strength, during the first invasion we saw the number of normal shinigami they killed, and during the whole war they even took out some captains. But the Espada? I'm not even sure if they killed any unnamed shinigami on screen, I can only remember Yami killing tons if normal people when he first arrived in the human world
Aizen got bored of his Espada after they were being outnumbered in FKT with the Vizard joining in but at the same time, Harribel and Starrk weren't "losing" against their multiple opponents. Aizen stated as much to Harribel that there's no point in watching her fight three Captain level Shinigami because it would go nowhere. The top 3 Espada all faced multiple Captain-class Shinigami at the same time before being taken down by plot and it's a shame they didn't get to feel more dangerous like the Sternritter in TYBW even though Espada 4 to 0 all scale close to the high tier Sternritter minus Schutzstaffel. We should also be reminded of the fact that Aizen did not have that many Vasto Lorde Espada. Only Espada 4-0 were Vasto Lorde in level while Espada 8-5 were Adjucha class and Espada 9-10 (Before Yammy sucked up enough souls to use Resurreccion and become Espada 0) were Gillian class. The Adjucha class Espada all jobbed to their Captain level opponents in the end and you can tell that Aizen didn't necessarily rate them highly enough to take with him to FKT so he kept them in Las Noches to distract the Captains + Ichigo there. Imagine if Aizen had 10 Vasto Lorde Espada, all at the level of base Ulquiorra and above. Hitsugaya was right, 10 Vasto Lorde would've easily ended the Gotei 13.
I don't recall Halibel fighting and losing to multiple opponents. She mainly fought Toshiro, who froze her in the end. Wonderweiss's screaming broke her out of it, after that she up to Aizen & he decided to cut her down.
The top 3 lost all because of their mentality: Espada Number 1 Starrk: Lost because of Loneliness and no fighting will, no living will after loosing the person he cares the most about too. Espada Number 2 Barragan: Lost because of his own Arrogance, ironically his resurreccion named Arrogante is what got him killed, he who called himself death and a king died of his own power and arrogance of playing his ennemy and leaving them multiple chances at finding out his powers. Espada number 3 Harribel: Lost from Loyalty, for she, was betrayed by her own leader, though she survived
The biggest reason why people underrate the Vasto Espada. Is because none of those Espada succeeded in defeating any of the captains let alone killing them and it gotten worse when the most powerful of the Espada is treated as a joke. Dispite all of them being more powerful than the captains. Yes there are statements that hype up the Vasto Lorde Espada but it doesn’t really mean much when said hype isn’t back up by feats.
To be fair if he went all out and so did shunsui, shunsui will clap and jushiro was ill..but yeah stark is strong but shunsui can take him Cuz Pernida>>Stark and Shunsui took him
Starrk durability is amazing too He fought like 4 capitans total (2 visored ones and 2 of the oldest and more experienced than likes of Soifon and Hitsugaya)
I'm still convinced that if those four Espada were still alive the Quincy invasion of Hueco Mundo would've gone so badly that Jugram and the other Royal Guard would have to step in
Sounds like they just where very meh about it all before it became “too late” to change their powers. Had stark got serious. He coulda won. Had barragan not played with his food. He woulda won. Ullqiora also toyed a lot with inchigo and his friends. Had he finished them all quickly he wouldn’t have fought zangetsu. Harribel survived. Which is better than most. And she was winning in the first place. The only reason she lost was aizen.
starkk was literally going against two mfs who were PERFECT counters to him, one who could get in his blind spots and another which could literally take his attacks and redirect them
Omaeda thought Ggio was genuinely beating Soi Fon so I don't think he's too reliable. I do think Ggio was powerful for a Fraccion since Soi Fon noted on his speed and strength being better than expected and catching her off guard, but he stood no chance against her full strength and Omaeda thought he was beating her 😅

Even if the showings of the top 4 in general were lacklustre, we must remember that all of them except barragan had little to no time to hone their arrancar powers in the limited time they were espada Ulqiorra basically sat in a bush for half his life and only really started training maybe 2-3 decades before the main storyline (very rough guess but it shouldn’t be more than 100 years), stark and harribel were even worse off as they had less than a few years to train since they only joined after aizen betrayed the soul society Meanwhile, captain level personnel like byakuya had at least a hundred years of training before he even reached the SS arc and we know the top 4 espada are vastly above SS arc byakuya Overall, the statement about a Vasto lorde being stronger than a captain might be an understatement since only through intense training does a captain manage to fathom the level of a Vasto lorde arrancar with at most 2 years of training

@DontatMe-u9h who cares about discipline. Zaraki was the main obstacle in that fight. Byakuya was support. And thats not bad because zaraki recieved a near deatg experience against noitorra. U can tell Byakuya was a miniscule factor in their fight because all of byakuyas attacks didblittle daamge to initial release yammy. His kido did no damage in a surprise attack and his bankai barely gashed yammys face.

I'll never understand why Harribel was able to survive while Starrk wasn't. Barragan should have been sealed away like Aizen and locked in the Muken given his insane power. Both would have been great in the final arc. Barragan should then be in the final fight against Yhwach since he represents Death something Yhwach was against.
Circumstances. Aizen simply wanted hallibel out of the way. Luckily for sure, he didn't make sure she was dead. Shunsui used an ability that he intended to kill starrk with. Barragon wouldve got one shot by yhwach let's be real.
Aizen cuts down Harribel and starts shit talking the Espada’s performance. Bro said they weren’t worthy of following him. When the story itself starts trashing their performance, you know they were basically filler fights to let the Gotei 13 show their tricks before Aizen mopped up.
Aizen was also wrong. As it turns out, Bleach Lucifer is infact capable of being wrong. Also, Bankai Hitsugaya beat Harribel by himself and Kubo just really failed to portray them as overwhelming captain level shinigami. Come on, Sajin Komamura was there and not fighting any Espada, was it really so hard as to have Sajin Komamura bail out Hitsugaya with Tier Harribel pushing both to the brink of defeat?
I have a question about squad zero. If Senjumaru’s Bankai was successful and finished off the royal guards and uryu, would the other squad zero members be revived and come back? Or would they stay unalive??
Their bodies and lives are all tied to the Royal Palace. After the story, they all get revived the same way Ichibe was: Having a powerful character call their names.
Yeah people just kind of remember it as them getting beaten up without any reason behind them, I do love it that because of how anime is consumed nowadays it led to people actually questioning how strong they were, cuz in general once you get defeated people just move on, without them realizing that somebody strongest characters in the series had to basically find ways around beating characters they were just weaker than.
I think that Vasto Lorde are overall about as strong as Captains, being physically much stronger lacking their skill and versatility; after arrancaring they gained greater versatility being able to project more energy while keeping better stats allowing them to take on multiple captains despite some of them getting bad match ups but where still getting used to their powers so they committed key mistakes on the process

I mean, Ulquiorra was overwheminh Ichigo but he was stiff as hell and his movements were more authomatic which is why Ichigo was consistently reading his movements; when Hitsugaya started using more original moves, Harribel’s answer was swinging her sword harder; Barragan is rather skilled and the databook said implied he was an experienced fighter but he forewent most of that when fighting and Starrk partly lost to Kyoraku due to not being able to match him in the sword after fire going his guns, for which he didn’t have a particularly good aim but mostly spammed. Their abilities are part of what I mean, because the captain’s abilities were far more polished and wasted less energy while the top Espada all felt more raw power based. None of the captains were able to match a top Espada in a direct fight which is why they avoided those and resorted to tricking a win out of them.
@elnombredelarosa3167 no starrk lost in the end because he was nerfed by shunsuis sneak attack and had less experience with shunsui games aka, abilities. Keep in mind that starrk by this point, has at most, 2 months of battle experience and that's implying he trained every second before the battle in fkt, which we know isn't the case. Yet he kept up in swordplay with shunsui while nerfed and deduced several times, shunsuis ability, and swordplay in combat. Startk is insanely skilled, id even go as far as to say the most skilled espada in combat with the only espada challenging him being barragon and that's only because of barragons huge experience. Ulquiorra was stiff because for most of the fight he wasn't taking ichigo AS seriously.

Talent and skill can go together. While it's true starrk being able to do that while having little experience, shows he's talented, that talent allows him to be watching and analyzing the enemy closely mid battle, which is skill that comes from talent. Why does breaking the floor matter, ulquiorra doesnt care about collateral. Obviously when ur fighting, putting more power into ur swings would always be. A good thing. Breaking the floor means hes strong, not that he lacks talent.
Starkk was really a good character, but people really overrate him that he wasn't even serious. Lets be real if Shunsui wasn't that carefree and he use his bankai. Shunsui bankai alone would have been enough to slay Starkk, but ofcourse the victim wouldn't have been only Starkk, but almost everyone with an exception of a few character like Ukitake and Yamamoto.
While I see your point, i think Stark's reietsu was higher than that of Shunsui. Which would mean Shunsui would drown before Stark in his own Bankai. Although Shunsui also had a lot more up his sleeves. Who knows..
With all this discussion on theory, I vote Kubo create a non-canon “What if” series for Bleach. Meaning, he writes episodes or even a mini movies / series that have scenes like: “What if Stark assisted against the quinces in the first invasion of the TYBW.” It would be so sick to see.
The difference is the soul reapers trained like crazy during the events of the arrancar arc Toshiro is good example since in the beginning he was struggling with Gillian arrancars to later overwhelming Harribel
The espada which are vasto lorde where so underwhelming as captain level opponents. Even though their characters had better nuisances than the sternritters. Ichigo’s main conflict in the series laid with hollows.

Harribel still lost to Toshiro, though. Wonderweiss had to break her out. So it doesn't really matter if her general stats were kinda higher than Toshiro's, since he had an ability that made him more powerful than any of hers made her. Barragan wasn't untouchable. He just only fought Hachi and Soi Fon. Someone with a way higher reiatsu would be able to overpower his Respira. In fact, Soi Fon's bankai was able to as well, to an extent. I'd agree with Ulquiorra losing to a guy who was probably stronger than base Aizen. Starrk at the end of the day lost to Shunsui, regardless of how serious he took it at the start. He was trying after Shunsui stabbed him and just got defeated. Shunsui isn't at all a weak opponent, just saying he still would've lost either way imo. But yes, the strongest of the espada were somewhere in that "higher end" of normal Stern Ritter category. Which is still very powerful. Ulquiorra was probs equivalent to the strongest normal SR. Which is Bazz B or Quilge. Or maybe Mask. Starrk was about at Bambietta or As Nodt tier. Barragan again, in that Bambietta tier. Harribel, we're probably looking at Cang Du, Candice or Liltotto tier. At max BG9, but I think BG9 was likely stronger than her lol
Wonderweiss did not break Harribel out of the ice. No glass on surrounding buildings shattered, no one was covering their ears because of the scream and lastly Starrk wasn't worried about her dying unlike how he was when Barragan died. Starrk lost to Shunsui....and 3 other captains by the time he was getting somewhat serious he was already extremely weakened from a full on impalement from behind. Ulqiora is probably peak base Sternritter tier so that's fine Harribel needed Ywhach himself to appear to deal with her and the Espadas 2-0 are above that but they most likely won't be able to be at Ywhach either.
Hallibel did not lose due to being weaker. She lost to plot. She blitzed toshiro several times in base and was capable of one shotting him in release. Yet she then has trouble hitting him and even waits for him to load his strongest move. Soi fon didn't overpower barragons respira. Barragon couldn't use respira at full capacity due to the confined space. Thats all. Vl ichigo being stronger than aizen is doubtful. Strark was nerfed enough to where the stab fatally injured his soul and his wolves disappeared. Even then, he went sword for sword with shunsui.

Just because no windows shattered, that doesn't prove anything. Nobody was obligated to think that windows might shatter because it's not real life.. Starrk was weakened a bit, yes. However, it's not like Shunsui even took it seriously before that either. In fact, a point blank cero from Starrk didn't do anything to him. Soon as he started using the actual abilities of the Shikai, he won within like 2 minutes. Oh and the Visored captains did absolutely nothing to weaken Starrk, just wanna make that clear. Halibel most likely didn't "need" Yhwach to come for her, it was just out of precaution. Nowhere was it in the story, that Halibel had managed to defeat Quilge or any of the other SR. Hueco Mundo was being conquered. I assume it has a lot more to do with that than Halibel being so powerful that Yhwach himself needed to deal with her. I mean, let's get absolutely real. She actually does not scale past FKT arc Toshiro, maybe first invasion Toshiro at best. Even if she did, there's absolutely no way to state none of the other SR would've sufficed.

Possibly due to Toshiro's Bankai not weakening over time like he thought, but the ice petal counter being that he was getting stronger. Like Ikkaku's. No other explanation really. Yeah, so she overpowered it. Any blast sufficient enough to damage him, despite being covered by Respira, is a limitation of it. Therefore, it is capable of overpowering it. If it wasn't sufficiently powerful, it wouldn't have done anything either way. VL Ichigo being stronger than base Aizen might very well be the case. Or on a similar level. Shikai Aizen, no. Starrk's initial wound was not fatal. His wolves were gone because Shunsui erased them. He was stabbed because Shunsui snuck up on him. He exchanged a couple of sword swings and immediately went down. Overall, I'd definitely say it's a win for Shunsui. If Starrk had tried from the start in good health, it would've been closer. As it had happened, it wasn't even remotely close when you think about it. Shunsui could straight up cut his ceros. Take on point blank cero with no damage. Take his wolves with little damage. He took no damage otherwise and barely even tried at the end still.

Oh and Shunsui wouldn't have ever landed a single hit on Starrk if the Vizords never distracted Starrk while fighting. Shunsui was only ever able to weaken Starrk by stabbing him from behind while the Vizords were Starrk's main attention just wanna make that clear. I disagree especially considering how it took 1 captain and 2 liutenant Vizords to fight and her and yet throughout the entire fight there wasn't even a single scratch on her and there's nothing to suggest otherwise that she couldn't deal with the Sternritters. I disagree btw she definitely does scale past Toshiro even post invasion by that point. The only Sternritters that would've sufficed are probably Gremmy who was locked away by that point, the Shutztaffel and Jugram. Can't imagine someone like BG9 winning when she can take a The strongest Ice Zanpakuto Bankai's strongest attack and emerge unscathed while BG9 was under 45% recovery from a Jakuho Raikoben.
Well reiatsu is important in fighting classes as someone with a lower reiatsu will probably be unable to harm those with a higher reiatsu or be at a disadvantage. Vast lordes are at least captain class and the arrancar transformation should amplify their reiatsu further. If some adjuchas class arrancar are captain level then vasto lorde class arrancar should be stronger
Unrelated question, do stark and zaraki have something in common because they are the only two in the series to have their zanpakuto as a physical representation, also both are able to merge and become stronger, is this something kubo just overlooked or is there a special way to have that release
These things are supposed to be the strongest of all the hollows. Even Captains aren't supposed to be a match for them. Aizen had TWENTY of them I remember reading that in the manga when that came out and I was all: OH PHUK ME!!!! what a waste
yes vasto lorde are stonger, but please also note that vasto lordes will stay true to their animal behaviour even when ther is a half baled menos (ulquiorra) with no soul in it can be able to stay conious like an animal, so even considering the gotei 13 will be facing huge problem with dealing vasto lordes, i am sure soul reapers can lay traps or centralize each animal vasto lorde according to the animal they are and can kill them. so yeah, vasto lorde are underrated.
Just finished the fight of espada no.4 and ichigo. He clearly stated that no.4 n above are banned to use resurrection and special espada cero in Las noches.
At the end if you have about 20 bodies to count on along with a busted general and the enemy has about 3 threats and 3 expandable soldiers, the 20 shall win because more people that are capable and then you have the way each one of those 3 viewed Aizen with 2 of them not seeing worth in fighting a battle that isn't for them but was forced upon by that Aizen, if anyone did them dirty it was Aizen then Kubo
If the Espada were handled differently, they may have had more success than the Quincy in their invasion. The Espada are not failures as many people believe.
Maybe in the TYBW we'll see what Vasto Lorde class Arrancar can really do with the changes we're seeing. Grimmjow did note that he'd trained to reach Vasto Lorde level, or even a bit beyond it. And with Urahara's device stabilizing Nel, we might see something more and something better from both her and Grimmjow. Could be a nice way to redeem the Vasto Lorde as a concept.
@@chilled480 No he wasn't. He was a panther-like Adjuchas. Harribel, Barragan, Ulquiorra, and Starrk were all Vasto Lorde, as before becoming Arrancar, they were all Humanoid in shape. Grimmjow looked like a Big Cat and moved on all fours.

They all got jumped by captain lvl opponents too Stark (holding back) vs Shunsui, Ukitake, Rose and Love Harribel vs Toshiro, and two vizards Barragan vs Soi Fon, omaeda and a vizard
I always thought if azien had more vastoe lords espadas like grimjow would fall in rank to like 8, and hallibel to 5, so 10 vastos would have been serious
They never confirmed any VL class hollow in the manga. I know that toshiros silhouette resembles #4 but other than the silhouette similarly, there's no direct confirmation that #4 is a VL. Also the episode that they confirmed #3 is a VL is an anime filler episode and is not canon. They never confirm that 0-2 are VL either. There are no confirmed VL in the cannon manga

At the start the Espadas were stronger than the Gotei 13 aside from Yamamoto Then they trained and got stronger which gave them a better chance wgainst them And Ichigo’s ever evolving power, as well as his friends defeating some in Hueco Mundo, Also from the Gotei 13 being more prepared to face them It wasn’t really the Espada’s fault. Except for apparently not getting stronger themselves Until the Gotei 13 had prep time, they were largely no match for the Espadas save for Yamamoto, and possibly Shushi, and Joshiro
Bruh u are overestimate them... Most of the top class captains were not their like unohona, kenpachi, mayuri and byakyua.. And shinshui, ukitake and yamaji never goes all out and yamaji was always backstabbed and he was not destroying he was fighting to protect so he can't even use full potential of his shikai 😂
Zaraki become far above avg captain lvl by the end of the arrancar arc. But most vasto lordes def surpass no prep mayuri and byakuya. Byakuya struggled with zommari base to base. Apply shikai and bankai and hewouldnt even make it past noitorra.
Byakuya outsped the fastest Espada and hurt Yammy who has the 2nd strongest hierro according to the data book. Zaraki had more fun fighting Byakuya than the strongest Espada. These mid story villains got power crept by the Gotei 13 and late game antagonists - the Wandenreich.
@tobiisagoodboy8510 byakuya outsped a fatigued zommari and only won that fight due to a direct counter from his ability. Zommari isn't tye fastest espada. He has tge fastest sonido, which is just the activation of the technique being so fast it allows him to physically be in multiple places at the same time. Starrk has better general use of the sonido and ulquiorra can fly. Byakuya did nothing to yammy until he was already injured by zaraki. And even then, his bankai barely grazes yammys face.
Never forget Ulquiorra can easily nuke the battlefield of fake Karakura Town in second release. I mean that explosion was literally a nuke. Yama would be forced to interfere or Kyoraku bankai
stark lost to shikai captain, yes he beat 2 that never released their bankai, kubo did him dirty and it's hard to take him seriously as #1. Barragan and Hallibel defeats were trolls too but not to the same extent. There were 0 real casualties in that "war" on the Shinigami side, even Hiyori survived getting cut in half.
The 3 espada only lose cause of the arrival of the vizards, without this Soi Fon and Hitsugaya would have lose, and Weiss would still had sealed Yama's Shikai resulting in the explosion, Aizen was right
Stark absolutely was not beating 2 captains without breaking a sweat. Shunsui wasn't even trying either and it was very much a 1v1 apart from a small part of it. Stark is in no way Shunsui's equal let alone strong enough to beat him "without breaking a sweat".
Starrk did beat love and rose with no sweat. Even without bankai, hollow mask is comparable to bankai in multiplier so u can still judge them on the basis of other captains. Starrk was nerfed in tge end by shunsuis sneak attack and could still go sword for sword with shunsui

Majority of the Espadas got done dirty in Arrancar Arc tbh, the only ones that got to showcase their fullest potential are Grimmjow, Ulquiorra and Granz. The rest got beat by either a bad matchup or just got beat by the plot especially The top 3 Espadas

I think Nnoitra showed everything he could. He had a equilibrated fight against a monster called Zaraki after number 5 in himself being beaten by Nel.
Kubo done Starrk dirty by killing him after one fight. And a fight he didn't was on 100% of his mind on it plus one foght that 2 of strongest captains and 2 buffed by hollow mask former captains. He was insanely strong, but this sensation wasn't fully transmitted for the public.
That's what I've been saying. Everyone saying Ulquiorra's Segunda was stronger, but we never even saw Starrk *_really_* try.
He took heavy direct hits from 2 Captain Class Vizard and decided he was safe enough to *_take a nap._*

It's also very uncharacteristic for him to fall to the most obvious trap that killed him. But perhaps it still made sense for him to lose his analytical skills since Lilynette's death made him emotionally distressed.

Uh Grimmjow & Nnoitora fight like that because of their particular aspects of death. As far their matches go, pretty sure Grimmjow's fight with Ichigo was fair.

You make a compelling point about the true potential of the Vasto Lorde-class Hollows. It feels like their power has been somewhat underappreciated, especially considering their pre-Espada form is already above most captains. The fact that their Resurrection could destroy Las Noches hints at a destructive force we never fully witnessed. Barragan's defeat by his own ability, Starrk barely breaking a sweat, and Harribel dominating Hitsugaya before even releasing-these are massive indicators of just how dangerous they were. It's almost like we’ve only scratched the surface of what Vasto Lorde Espadas could have unleashed if given more space.
Kubo definitely didn't let Arrancar live up to their hype, but I think it could also be said that it's a difference of raw power vs skill. Sure, the Vasto Lordes were alive for a long time and each had some degree of control over their abilities, but it wasn't until Aizen showed up that they were able to become as advanced as the Espada. Even that didn't allow them to fully explore or train their abilities to their absolute limits. Ulqiorra's 2nd form showed that pretty clearly, where his power was incredible but his mastery over it wasn't very good.
Even if they were stronger than the average captain of the Gotei 13 in terms of sheer power, their inability to effectively train their skills or fall back upon the wealth of knowledge that the Soul Society had made them bad matchups against most captains who had access to both more tools, better training, and more options.
Against an enemy who they couldn't simply overwhelm with sheer power, the Espada were found lacking in every respect. Ichigo is kinda in a similar boat himself, being forced to rely almost exclusively on his absurdly high innate spiritual energy and brute force his enemies down because he lacks both the tools and the knowledge base to effectively win via strategy most of the time (fight IQ being a bit different than actual strategy).
I think the main reason of why most Espadas didn't live up their hype is because they are not the main antagonist of the arc. Kubo's main focus was to make Aizen as threatening as possble. He is the big bad guy. And so, Epsadas' role were mere mid bosses. Which is such a shame because they are my favorite faction of the series.
The thing that makes Arrancar seem weak, is the fact that literally not a single names soul reaper died fighting them. With the Quincy you can see their strength, during the first invasion we saw the number of normal shinigami they killed, and during the whole war they even took out some captains. But the Espada? I'm not even sure if they killed any unnamed shinigami on screen, I can only remember Yami killing tons if normal people when he first arrived in the human world

Hopefully Stark comes back in the Hell Arc to get redeemed since he didn't get a proper showcase in Fake Karakura.
Aizen got bored of his Espada after they were being outnumbered in FKT with the Vizard joining in but at the same time, Harribel and Starrk weren't "losing" against their multiple opponents. Aizen stated as much to Harribel that there's no point in watching her fight three Captain level Shinigami because it would go nowhere. The top 3 Espada all faced multiple Captain-class Shinigami at the same time before being taken down by plot and it's a shame they didn't get to feel more dangerous like the Sternritter in TYBW even though Espada 4 to 0 all scale close to the high tier Sternritter minus Schutzstaffel.
We should also be reminded of the fact that Aizen did not have that many Vasto Lorde Espada. Only Espada 4-0 were Vasto Lorde in level while Espada 8-5 were Adjucha class and Espada 9-10 (Before Yammy sucked up enough souls to use Resurreccion and become Espada 0) were Gillian class. The Adjucha class Espada all jobbed to their Captain level opponents in the end and you can tell that Aizen didn't necessarily rate them highly enough to take with him to FKT so he kept them in Las Noches to distract the Captains + Ichigo there. Imagine if Aizen had 10 Vasto Lorde Espada, all at the level of base Ulquiorra and above. Hitsugaya was right, 10 Vasto Lorde would've easily ended the Gotei 13.
I don't recall Halibel fighting and losing to multiple opponents. She mainly fought Toshiro, who froze her in the end. Wonderweiss's screaming broke her out of it, after that she up to Aizen & he decided to cut her down.
Harribel got done the worst imo.
She had more hits against toshiro with his bankai before her resurrection. She actively got worse
The top 3 lost all because of their mentality:
Espada Number 1 Starrk: Lost because of Loneliness and no fighting will, no living will after loosing the person he cares the most about too.
Espada Number 2 Barragan: Lost because of his own Arrogance, ironically his resurreccion named Arrogante is what got him killed, he who called himself death and a king died of his own power and arrogance of playing his ennemy and leaving them multiple chances at finding out his powers.
Espada number 3 Harribel: Lost from Loyalty, for she, was betrayed by her own leader, though she survived
The biggest reason why people underrate the Vasto Espada. Is because none of those Espada succeeded in defeating any of the captains let alone killing them and it gotten worse when the most powerful of the Espada is treated as a joke. Dispite all of them being more powerful than the captains.
Yes there are statements that hype up the Vasto Lorde Espada but it doesn’t really mean much when said hype isn’t back up by feats.

Omaeda thought Ggio was genuinely beating Soi Fon so I don't think he's too reliable. I do think Ggio was powerful for a Fraccion since Soi Fon noted on his speed and strength being better than expected and catching her off guard, but he stood no chance against her full strength and Omaeda thought he was beating her 😅

Ulqiorra basically sat in a bush for half his life and only really started training maybe 2-3 decades before the main storyline (very rough guess but it shouldn’t be more than 100 years), stark and harribel were even worse off as they had less than a few years to train since they only joined after aizen betrayed the soul society
Meanwhile, captain level personnel like byakuya had at least a hundred years of training before he even reached the SS arc and we know the top 4 espada are vastly above SS arc byakuya
Overall, the statement about a Vasto lorde being stronger than a captain might be an understatement since only through intense training does a captain manage to fathom the level of a Vasto lorde arrancar with at most 2 years of training

I'll never understand why Harribel was able to survive while Starrk wasn't. Barragan should have been sealed away like Aizen and locked in the Muken given his insane power. Both would have been great in the final arc. Barragan should then be in the final fight against Yhwach since he represents Death something Yhwach was against.
Circumstances. Aizen simply wanted hallibel out of the way. Luckily for sure, he didn't make sure she was dead. Shunsui used an ability that he intended to kill starrk with. Barragon wouldve got one shot by yhwach let's be real.

Their bodies and lives are all tied to the Royal Palace. After the story, they all get revived the same way Ichibe was: Having a powerful character call their names.

Yeah people just kind of remember it as them getting beaten up without any reason behind them, I do love it that because of how anime is consumed nowadays it led to people actually questioning how strong they were, cuz in general once you get defeated people just move on, without them realizing that somebody strongest characters in the series had to basically find ways around beating characters they were just weaker than.
I think that Vasto Lorde are overall about as strong as Captains, being physically much stronger lacking their skill and versatility; after arrancaring they gained greater versatility being able to project more energy while keeping better stats allowing them to take on multiple captains despite some of them getting bad match ups but where still getting used to their powers so they committed key mistakes on the process
Espadas didn't rlly lose in skill tho. They could keep up in swordplay with most of the captains. Only factor was their abilities.

I mean, Ulquiorra was overwheminh Ichigo but he was stiff as hell and his movements were more authomatic which is why Ichigo was consistently reading his movements; when Hitsugaya started using more original moves, Harribel’s answer was swinging her sword harder; Barragan is rather skilled and the databook said implied he was an experienced fighter but he forewent most of that when fighting and Starrk partly lost to Kyoraku due to not being able to match him in the sword after fire going his guns, for which he didn’t have a particularly good aim but mostly spammed.
Their abilities are part of what I mean, because the captain’s abilities were far more polished and wasted less energy while the top Espada all felt more raw power based. None of the captains were able to match a top Espada in a direct fight which is why they avoided those and resorted to tricking a win out of them.

Keep in mind that starrk by this point, has at most, 2 months of battle experience and that's implying he trained every second before the battle in fkt, which we know isn't the case. Yet he kept up in swordplay with shunsui while nerfed and deduced several times, shunsuis ability, and swordplay in combat. Startk is insanely skilled, id even go as far as to say the most skilled espada in combat with the only espada challenging him being barragon and that's only because of barragons huge experience.
Ulquiorra was stiff because for most of the fight he wasn't taking ichigo AS seriously.

Talent and skill can go together. While it's true starrk being able to do that while having little experience, shows he's talented, that talent allows him to be watching and analyzing the enemy closely mid battle, which is skill that comes from talent.
Why does breaking the floor matter, ulquiorra doesnt care about collateral. Obviously when ur fighting, putting more power into ur swings would always be. A good thing. Breaking the floor means hes strong, not that he lacks talent.

Starkk was really a good character, but people really overrate him that he wasn't even serious. Lets be real if Shunsui wasn't that carefree and he use his bankai. Shunsui bankai alone would have been enough to slay Starkk, but ofcourse the victim wouldn't have been only Starkk, but almost everyone with an exception of a few character like Ukitake and Yamamoto.

Harribel still lost to Toshiro, though. Wonderweiss had to break her out. So it doesn't really matter if her general stats were kinda higher than Toshiro's, since he had an ability that made him more powerful than any of hers made her.
Barragan wasn't untouchable. He just only fought Hachi and Soi Fon. Someone with a way higher reiatsu would be able to overpower his Respira. In fact, Soi Fon's bankai was able to as well, to an extent.
I'd agree with Ulquiorra losing to a guy who was probably stronger than base Aizen.
Starrk at the end of the day lost to Shunsui, regardless of how serious he took it at the start. He was trying after Shunsui stabbed him and just got defeated. Shunsui isn't at all a weak opponent, just saying he still would've lost either way imo.
But yes, the strongest of the espada were somewhere in that "higher end" of normal Stern Ritter category. Which is still very powerful. Ulquiorra was probs equivalent to the strongest normal SR. Which is Bazz B or Quilge. Or maybe Mask.

Wonderweiss did not break Harribel out of the ice. No glass on surrounding buildings shattered, no one was covering their ears because of the scream and lastly Starrk wasn't worried about her dying unlike how he was when Barragan died.
Starrk lost to Shunsui....and 3 other captains by the time he was getting somewhat serious he was already extremely weakened from a full on impalement from behind.

Hallibel did not lose due to being weaker. She lost to plot. She blitzed toshiro several times in base and was capable of one shotting him in release. Yet she then has trouble hitting him and even waits for him to load his strongest move.
Soi fon didn't overpower barragons respira. Barragon couldn't use respira at full capacity due to the confined space. Thats all.

Starrk was weakened a bit, yes. However, it's not like Shunsui even took it seriously before that either. In fact, a point blank cero from Starrk didn't do anything to him. Soon as he started using the actual abilities of the Shikai, he won within like 2 minutes. Oh and the Visored captains did absolutely nothing to weaken Starrk, just wanna make that clear.
Halibel most likely didn't "need" Yhwach to come for her, it was just out of precaution. Nowhere was it in the story, that Halibel had managed to defeat Quilge or any of the other SR. Hueco Mundo was being conquered. I assume it has a lot more to do with that than Halibel being so powerful that Yhwach himself needed to deal with her. I mean, let's get absolutely real. She actually does not scale past FKT arc Toshiro, maybe first invasion Toshiro at best. Even if she did, there's absolutely no way to state none of the other SR would've sufficed.

Possibly due to Toshiro's Bankai not weakening over time like he thought, but the ice petal counter being that he was getting stronger. Like Ikkaku's. No other explanation really.
Yeah, so she overpowered it. Any blast sufficient enough to damage him, despite being covered by Respira, is a limitation of it. Therefore, it is capable of overpowering it. If it wasn't sufficiently powerful, it wouldn't have done anything either way.

Starrk's initial wound was not fatal. His wolves were gone because Shunsui erased them. He was stabbed because Shunsui snuck up on him. He exchanged a couple of sword swings and immediately went down. Overall, I'd definitely say it's a win for Shunsui. If Starrk had tried from the start in good health, it would've been closer. As it had happened, it wasn't even remotely close when you think about it. Shunsui could straight up cut his ceros. Take on point blank cero with no damage. Take his wolves with little damage. He took no damage otherwise and barely even tried at the end still.

"Starrk was weakened a bit" he was completely unable to use his guns after the stab, same with the wolves except in the anime where he at least used those. Shunsui was outright bleeding from the point blank Cero and became a crater for a while. Oh and Shunsui wouldn't have ever landed a single hit on Starrk if the Vizords never distracted Starrk while fighting. Shunsui was only ever able to weaken Starrk by stabbing him from behind while the Vizords were Starrk's main attention just wanna make that clear.
I disagree especially considering how it took 1 captain and 2 liutenant Vizords to fight and her and yet throughout the entire fight there wasn't even a single scratch on her and there's nothing to suggest otherwise that she couldn't deal with the Sternritters. I disagree btw she definitely does scale past Toshiro even post invasion by that point. The only Sternritters that would've sufficed are probably Gremmy who was locked away by that point, the Shutztaffel and Jugram. Can't imagine someone like BG9 winning when she can take a The strongest Ice Zanpakuto Bankai's strongest attack and emerge unscathed while BG9 was under 45% recovery from a Jakuho Raikoben.
Well reiatsu is important in fighting classes as someone with a lower reiatsu will probably be unable to harm those with a higher reiatsu or be at a disadvantage. Vast lordes are at least captain class and the arrancar transformation should amplify their reiatsu further. If some adjuchas class arrancar are captain level then vasto lorde class arrancar should be stronger
Unrelated question, do stark and zaraki have something in common because they are the only two in the series to have their zanpakuto as a physical representation, also both are able to merge and become stronger, is this something kubo just overlooked or is there a special way to have that release

yes vasto lorde are stonger, but please also note that vasto lordes will stay true to their animal behaviour even when ther is a half baled menos (ulquiorra) with no soul in it can be able to stay conious like an animal, so even considering the gotei 13 will be facing huge problem with dealing vasto lordes, i am sure soul reapers can lay traps or centralize each animal vasto lorde according to the animal they are and can kill them. so yeah, vasto lorde are underrated.

And with Urahara's device stabilizing Nel, we might see something more and something better from both her and Grimmjow.

They never confirmed any VL class hollow in the manga. I know that toshiros silhouette resembles #4 but other than the silhouette similarly, there's no direct confirmation that #4 is a VL. Also the episode that they confirmed #3 is a VL is an anime filler episode and is not canon. They never confirm that 0-2 are VL either. There are no confirmed VL in the cannon manga

Zaraki become far above avg captain lvl by the end of the arrancar arc. But most vasto lordes def surpass no prep mayuri and byakuya. Byakuya struggled with zommari base to base. Apply shikai and bankai and hewouldnt even make it past noitorra.
Byakuya outsped the fastest Espada and hurt Yammy who has the 2nd strongest hierro according to the data book.
Zaraki had more fun fighting Byakuya than the strongest Espada. These mid story villains got power crept by the Gotei 13 and late game antagonists - the Wandenreich.
@tobiisagoodboy8510 byakuya outsped a fatigued zommari and only won that fight due to a direct counter from his ability. Zommari isn't tye fastest espada. He has tge fastest sonido, which is just the activation of the technique being so fast it allows him to physically be in multiple places at the same time. Starrk has better general use of the sonido and ulquiorra can fly.
Byakuya did nothing to yammy until he was already injured by zaraki. And even then, his bankai barely grazes yammys face.
Top 3 Espadas, Squad Zero, Gerard and Yhwach were handled very badly by Kubo.

stark lost to shikai captain, yes he beat 2 that never released their bankai, kubo did him dirty and it's hard to take him seriously as #1. Barragan and Hallibel defeats were trolls too but not to the same extent. There were 0 real casualties in that "war" on the Shinigami side, even Hiyori survived getting cut in half.

Starrk did beat love and rose with no sweat. Even without bankai, hollow mask is comparable to bankai in multiplier so u can still judge them on the basis of other captains. Starrk was nerfed in tge end by shunsuis sneak attack and could still go sword for sword with shunsui
