Genuine Barn Find 80s hot hatch - real life Forza Horizon

- Опубліковано 16 чер 2024
- This is a genuine barn find of a true 80s hot hatch survivor. Jonny Smith headed back to Wales to pounce on a hibernating Renault 5 GT Turbo that hadn't moved since its tax ran out in 2001.
Several things really attracted Jonny to this Renault 5, which had been brought to our attention by a fellow car hoarder called Sion Ellis from www.automax-wales.com/. Sion first got in touch with Jonny because he found a one owner original Allegro Equipe a few years back. He then learned of an unmolested R5 GTT via an old friend.
Thanks for stopping by The Late Brake Show.
For starters the owner of the Renault had had it since the late '80s (2nd owner) and it hadn't succumbed to any of the usual Max Power mods. Now you cannot find a good unmolested 5GTT for toffee. Hard to believe that there's less than 300 left in total on UK roads. Do Jonny and Sion manage to fire up the hot hatch Renault? Watch on to find out.

The type R is not an 1800 kg car it is closer to 1400 kg you might be thinking about an M3 Johnny
I must have eaten the wrong breakfast that morning and got my stats mixed up. Huge apologies to everyone who pointed out I'd weight shamed the new Civic R.
@@TheLateBrakeShow haha 😆 the plus sized Civics will be giving you hate on Twitter. Great episode as usual.
Absolutely class....would like to see that 5 when it's been restored
I thought it sounded heavy
@@TheLateBrakeShow tut tut tut 😂
My dad’s secretary had one. She got caught speeding and ended up in court. When asked “why were you doing 60 in a forty limit?”, her answer was “slowing down for a roundabout”. The book was thrown at her and she was banned for a couple of months. 😂
A mate of mine did a speed awareness course, and when they got the little bit of cardboard to write down their names for the lecturer, he decided to put "Ayrton Senna" on it. The lecturer had no sense of humour and threatened to throw him off the course and collect 3 points unless he apologised. Whoops! 🤣🤣
🧢
That‘s what I‘m doing with my 996.2 GT3 👌
You’re dad was defo banging her….if he had any sense…
Brilliant, made me laugh
This absolutely MUST be followed up once she's recommissioned 👌👌
A "where are they now" series even.
@@AnttiBrax yes!!
As a former R5GT owner I can attest to how much fun they were/are. The feeling of mashing the loud pedal and waiting for the turbo to catch up, then fire you at the horizon never got old.
My brother had one and I absolutely loved to drive it. Driving it was even more fun than driving my VW Golf 1 1.8 GTI, which wasn't bad either.
I do , had some fun still miss to this day
I had one aswell exact same colour as this one thay were so much fun
Thats right defo a drivers car, being able to keep the turbo spinning at optimum...i had a pearlescent white one back in the day, loved it
Insanely fragile and, when tuned, insanely quick. Like a road going roller coaster.
I don't know why but I love how Jonny starts the videos by diving straight in, and then casually introduces himself and the show a minute or so in. Love it Jonny. Great 80s vibe music too. 😍
Cheers Dan, so glad you enjoy it.
You are absolutely right. Gets you hooked from the beginning. No sponsorship or plea to subscribe as you see everywhere
Great video!
It's good. Because I am sick to death of a 2 minute intro and what the guys name is. Because we want to CUT TO THE CHASE instead of hear your name and background story we ALREADY know. My name is kinda different but NOONE CARES.
As a french man raised in France in the 80-90s, i approve this message. One of the most fun cars around, seen a mint 205 GTI 16v from the 90s few weeks ago here in Nice, still gorgeous.
My dad taught me to drive in a 205 GTI 1.9, I loved that car a lot you hardly see them anymore.. shame really they were fantastic
I still own a 205GTI!
My friend's brother had a black 205 GTI when we were younger, there were Renault 5 Turbo's aplenty, and also another friend of mine had a Citroen AX GT with a rally head and cam.. that car used to fly as well, much like the Renault 5 it weighed nothing. All great cars but the 205 and R5 were my favourites! Good times.
@@simes205 Nice, what's the condition..
@@simes205 1.6 or 1.9? Colour? Mileage?
It would be great to see a video when it's finished. I used to see these car's tearing around the South Wales valley's as a kid, great to see again.
I was 1 of those tearing up the valleys in my Reggie 5 turbo 😀
I had a black Gordini Turbo and red 205CTi, it could have been me too 😎
Yeah I also used to have one! It was an awesome car. If I'd only known how valuable they would become! 🙄
Dump valves were essential too. 😂
@@karl1971 yes definitely you wernt cool without a Bailey's dump valve 🤣🤣
Probably the best episode yet! Both your and Sion's excitement and enthusiasm are infectious.
Fantastic find Jonny. What a survivor. Obviously well cared for when it was used. Such an iconic 80’s hot hatch. Thank you.
Holy moly, what an episode.
These videos make me feel like the UK is an island full of "buried" treasure.
Keep them coming Jonny!
I hope you can put a part two of the Renaults new life once it's been cleaned. I bought one in Canada with snow tyres the front only, and it was a little tank, nothing would stop it!
I found a 300 mile Mini Metro in a barn - a literal farmers' barn in 2010. Now a Mini Metro is not that special - but it was in mint condition with 300 miles on it, so I contacted the Mini Metro owners club and gave them the chassis number etc, I was immediately contacted by a very excited guy.
It was from the same donor chassis production run as Colin McRae's 6R4 and this guy HAD a Colin McRae crashed 6R4 he needed a shell for. There is a difference on the donor shell, you cant use a standard 3 door metro for some reason. Anyway - I paid £250 for it and sold it for £1500 so I was happy and happier that it was going to a GREAT place...
Ohh the joy! E872 GLO was my baby back in the day. Gloss black she was. Drove her to GT tuning in Poole from Manchester and had the full works. Superchip'd, adjustable boost, turbo uprated, new clutch, air filter, dump valve, strut brace. Some of the best fun I ever had on 4 wheels. No power steering. A proper drivers car. Great times dispite the fuel pump failures, electrical issues, head gaskets, water pumps lol. Driving while the dash vibrated and lit up like a christmas tree, while catching the interior mirror as it fell off lol. Nearly crashing while trying to get a tape into the radio because of its daft position lol. Climbing though the boot when the fob stopped working because you de-locked the doors. All typical issues for most GTT owners. 1000s spent but I loved her. She eventually was written off. Wrapped around a set of traffic lights by her new owner 3 weeks after I sold her. Good times 🖤
Super chipped with no ECU 🤐
The editing , music , dronework and of course the fantastic presenting makes this a far superior show . Discovery / Dave channels etc should have this on primetime cos it's that good .
Dont think I've ever seen a bad / crappy late break show / car pervert episode ever , even your talent johnny has rubbed off onto your missus , the episodes she presents are great too . Cant get enough . Thanks guys 🚙💨💨❤
Goosebumps when it fired up! Can almost smell the fumes, the excitement for old cars firing up after such a long time is priceless. Excellent video!
GREAT EPISODE - I bet dollars to donuts that the front splitter damage has everything to do with the dented speedline alloy in the hatch. The driver at the time knew it would be some time to get that wheel round again, so he rotated the spare to the rear and ran the rear alloy up front. Probably understeered into something that took it out.
Can't quite explain why, but I get a hell of a lot of Joy out of these videos. Well done to all those involved in the creation.
Absolutely loved ❤ this Johnny. Only been watching TLBS for a few months, and doing the barn finds in the last couple weeks 🙌🏼 Awesome content, we’ll presented and edited with ample British 🇬🇧humour, bravo chap, keep em coming 🙏🏼
Great to see this car going on to have a new life. I work in old properties in remote locations across the Scottish highlands and it always amazes me how many old cars are hidden away in outbuildings and buried under hedges in gardens. I was at a house a few months ago with 5 GT Turbo sat up next to a 911, both never moved for years. It really is great to see.
Knocking it out of the park with these barn find episodes!! thankyou Johnny keep up the good work!!
This Barn looks like it's straight out the Forza Horizon games, how apt!
Was thinking the same
Loving the cinematography and music in this episode. What an ending shot too! (and the gkorious sound of that engine firing up).
I loved this episode. As a teenager with a reasonably new license, I worked in a Renault dealership whilst these (and the R19 16v) were about. Absolutely loved them, great fun. Brought back loads of good memories. Proper hot hatches.
That was a magnificent trip down memory lane. Thank you Jonny and crew.
Thank YOU for watching. Glad you enjoyed it as much as Jonny did.
I love Jonnys enthusiasm to get it starting and having “It’s alive” moment.
I had a brand new one when I was 23 and drive it across Europe to Greece. Then onto Cyprus.
Incredibly uncomfortable on a distance run and equally fun.
Amazing handling out the box.
Really enjoyed watching this. Nice work Johnny
Loved this, please revisit it when it’s restored and takes us on a thrash down 80’s memory lane
My favourite barn find yet. Brings back memories of my own 1990 gt turbo, many moons ago ❤️👍🏻
Gosh, that made me feel emotional, listening that engine trying to start. Another great barnfind video Johnny, Thank you. 🙂
This is great - you have brightened up my Friday. I owned a red 1988 GT Turbo back in 1991 and also owned three 11 Turbos. All were daily drivers and with correct maintenance including the correct oil - Shell Gemini I recall was effective but changed every 4-5000, quality magnesium tipped plugs every 7-8,000 (£10:00 each then!) and regular coolant and temperature checks, they were capable of long distances and shorter blasts with excellent reliability. The phase 2 Renault 11 Turbos running the same engine but with 5 bhp less, were a real Q car when de-badged and could easily worry other fast cars. They are even rarer today than the 5 GT Turbo. Let's hope that this Tungsten Grey example is fully restored and pampered in its old age. Fabulous.
Great episode. Glad I got to own and enjoy a silver one of these back in the day!
Thanks for jogging the memories Jonny
Fantastic video - lovely for her story to be told & continue on into the future. Pleasure meeting you too :)
I had one of the earlier models, a "C" reg version. Had it for a couple of years as a daily drive. Fantastic car to drive and I found it not too thirsty for fuel. Overtaking was a pure dream, often not even needing a down change given the torque available. I'm now retired and living in Australia but I have very happy memories of my R5 Turbo and wish that I still had it. Would love to see a video of this car after the renovation.
Was it blue
Loved that. My mate had a red one as a company car back in the day. I had a MK1 Golf GTi and we had a Sunday trip out to Brands Hatch and he wiped the floor with me! Thanks for the memories Jonny
Bloody love this series!
I’d love a post-resto catch up and test drive with this gem (and the others).
Absolutely brilliant! Takes me back to my first job when our Finance Director had a R5 Turbo just like this. Happy days! :)
This has to be one of my fave barn find's, I remember shortly after I passed my test in 99 seeing one for sale just down the road (around £4K I think it was up for) and thinking I would love that but there's not a chance in hell I'm getting insured 😄
Another stonking barn farm episode thanks Jonny and the team your enthusiasm is contagious 👍😊
That thing is absolutely beautiful, I love the barn finds series and this is the best one yet. Thank you so much!
Love watching videos like this, the R5 wasn't my favourite hot hatch but it's always nice to see classics given a second chance
Same. I'm more into things like MG Metro Turbos and 309 GTis but this is excellent. Bringing the old hot hatch heroes from the 80s and 90s!
Wow, I was transported back in time 35 years when you showed the interior. I worked in Sheffield at the time and a customer let me have a blast 'around the block' in his new red one; I was mighty impressed but it felt like it was going to fall to bits as everything was made so flimsily.
Amazing episode! Such a great find in practically original condtion - as a teen when these were on sale this is nostalgia overload! Great production by you and the team too, you make us feel like we are there with you.
Cheers David 👍🏽
Just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed this edition of the Late Brake Show.
I think one word would sum it up perfectly - WOW !
Learnt to drive in a base model Renault 5 and it was a fun, nippy little car with woohoo a five speed box.
Good times.
People of my generation will remember the hot hatches of the day, most notably the venerable Golf GTI Mk 1 but this car will go on to put big smiles on the lucky owners face.
Thank you
David W.
Great episode, my neighbour had exactly this grey phase 2 version and at the time I had the Nissan Cherry Turbo, which was fuel injected and quite an advanced Bosch based ECU setup. We always laughed at the hair dryer that kicked in after he came home to ensure it restarted, and often it didn’t leaving him rather grumpy. But I always wished I had the R5 as it just looked so damn KOOL. Brought back a lot of memories Jonny.
I'd love a go in a Cherry Turbo. Rarer than a GTT now I'd say...
I had a black Cherry Turbo also, before my R5GT, to find one of those in a barn would be amazing!!
@@grumpyrse yep would make a great episode !
My girlfriend's Dad in the early 90s had a Cherry Turbo. Wolf in sheep's clothing. Made quite a wining sound on full send!
I'd love to see some follow on videos to these barn finds, I'm sure a good portion just end up gathering dust again but it would be great to see the ones that hit the road once more!
I remember when I had my first job I worked at a farm and Renault UK used to store there new cars in a compound I remember seeing around 200 to 300 brand new Renault 5 gt turbos I wonder where they all are now brilliant to see someone bringing one back to life good find johny love the videos 👍
I used to own a Renualt 5 Turbo when I was 18yrs old, I absolutely loved that car. I remember having a Street Race with an Astra GTE 16v and it was neck and neck. I do remember it always breaking down every month, but I had so much joy. Great find
Man, that was brilliant.
So happy to hear a barn find cough, splutter then sing, yes R5 GT Turbo, you plucky little hot hatch you...👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks again Jonny, another great episode...🎩
Great to see and hear the engine fire up. Have 2 little 5 turbo stories. My mate had a gordini turbo. He wrote it off after someone pulled out in front of him . He said the steering wheel actually bent round to nearly touch the steering column.. so not the strongest thing in the world. The other is watching an elderly lady give a 5 turbo gt raider( the last of the line blue one) a full rev. Slipped clutch unintentional launch across a waitrose car park... looked impressive. She looked bloody frightened. Great video as always Jonny. 👍🏻
Thank you for this! Great memories, I had a C plate, electric blue phase 1 R5 Turbo. I got it after working in a Sextons after Uni, 1994/95. Renault Clio 14" alloys, slightly bigger exhaust, Clifford alarm, anti-shatter window film, de-locked, bee sting Ariel and a mint sound system. Alpine then clarion head unit. Denon very heavy and old amp running 2 x alpine 10" subs, alpine 4 x 50 rms, running infinity 6x9s and component fronts in door builds by me. It was the best rave mobile ever. Welsh roads were amazing. M4, M1, M5 devoured on a weekly basis and apart from a dodgy relay, it never let me down. I really wish I still had it!
Enjoyed this one. Always great when you get these barn finds running
Just awesome. My wife thinks I'm mental as im shouting "it's going" and "she wants to run". Then a huge grin when it started up.
I remember so badly wanting one when I was in my early teens.
Great video Jonny 👌
Greetings from Spain
What a brilliant video and brought back a great memory for me.
Back in the 90's when I was at uni my housemate/landlord had one of these in absolutely mint condition and so much fun!
Nice to see that its still working after all these years. There are a lot of extremly fun 80ties cars standing around and forgotten how fun they were to drive. Just keep them alive.
Would be great to have updates on these barn finds 😊
The roads in north Wales were made for these back in the good old days - too many speed controls now. I drove one of these a few times - fun but below about 2,500 revs were gutless, then took off and had a very low red line at around 5,000 revs. Were really hard work but fun. I had the 205 GTi (1.6 then 1.9) which were easier to drive and not so manic. The road rallies I did back then in the 205 in the hills of north Wales were great fun - now no more due to safety concerns ! But given the current hot hatches are so much faster probably a good thing. Great memories
Yes the average speed cameras have really killed that nice flowing road you could safely do much faster.
What a BRILLIANT episode! I remember my mates one in exactly the same colour but with TSW Wheels back in the day, such a classic hot hatch!
I was in my 20s when these cars were about. I worked in a garage at the time and drove quite a few hot hatches of that era, and the 5 GT turbo was THE one that struck awe into many a spotty young driver. It's amazing what Renault did with a carbed pushrod turbo engine and 105 horsepower. I love em and this was a real nostalgia fest for me. Fantastic
Now if only you knew someone with an Uno Turbo that’s been sat in a barn for a few years, you could complete the set.
✊🏽😳
Was a few immaculate Uno turbos at Mallory last weekend.
How many left show eleven road legal, most of those must have been there.
Minty Uno Turbo at Capesthorne Hall classic show a few weeks ago, that brought back memories!
Have an original mk2 in a container here in New Zealand 🙋♂️
Brilliant! Had a 5 GT Turbo back in the day & loved it. Great memories!
That was a cracking Barn Find video, Jonny - one of your best from a purely sentimental aspect.
Great work, dude... 😎
* cough * can there be an Allegro Equipe follow- up vid please * cough *
Wonderful barn find, what a great car. Awesome to hear it running with that pipe.
Also the barn location was great, so picturesque. Lent itself to some great drone shots, nicely done.
Hey Jonny what a great find. I’ve owned 3 of them in the past. Best ever hot hatch in my opinion. Not the fastest but the most exciting to drive. Brilliant motor.
Just found the channel a few days ago and wow.... loving all the barn find videos. Keep up the good work👍
I had one D reg 1987, second car as a 17 yr old. Changed the wheels, stuck a Devil exhaust, love that car. Totalled it as usual. I could have told you everything about this car, Year, power, top speed, when the turbo kicks in, how to get it past 130 mph etc etc !
Great barn find and good to hear that sound again .
It’s joyous when these old cars spring back to life. These cars have soul.
Absolutely love this! Could not stop grinning when it fired up. Would be great to see how the restoration comes along
How glorious to see that sparking into life! Top job!
That’s just brilliant Jonnie, what a result. Be nice to see it again when it’s been restored/ recommissioned.
The scenery, the gorgeous weather, the iconic hot hatch of my youth, the smooth presenting style of Johnny.... my favourite UA-cam video of the day by far, possibly the week!
Thank you v muchos!
I owned a F reg R5 gt turbo in black in the 80’s , I’ve had several nice cars since I sold it and always regretted it .
Unless you have owned or driven one I don’t think you can appreciate how much fun and how unique these cars were
great work JONNY I had one of these in 92 ,so it brought back some great memories so thanks for the memory... hope theres gonna be a follow up on this one
Another fabulous episode. I'm sure I wasn't the only one shouting at the screen when the R5 Turbo was teasing us by delaying the inevitable burst into life!!!!! Brilliant
What dreams are made of…
That complete intact interior and even the inter cooler strap. Wow.
The sound is what got me hooked on these, rattly tappity front end and deep angry burble out the rear.
Only the Astra GTE 16v had legs on these, when considering the R5 is a carbed 8v 1.4 dating back to the 50’s….
My old 5 running a bar of boost made 148bhp but an astonishing 179lb of torque that hit hard right after 3k revs. Plenty for sub 900kg.
My fave bit are the brakes, so much feel.
Another fantastic barn find video. The bonnet-mounted camera was perfect for the eventual engine start-up. Great images of flying aluminium water pump debris!
Many thanks Ian. Always hard to try and capture the fire up moment, because it can sometimes take hours (or never arrive)
I love these barn find videos Jonny there are the best. I would love to see follow up videos and maybe document the cars getting detailed 😉 all that algae I would love to see these cars shine again. Keep up the excellent videos. Without doubt one of the top10 if not top5 car enthusiasts / journalists in the UK 👍👍👍
It brings joy seeing these old animals survive, I't did put a smile to my face seeing the little car starting again.
I owned one of these for over a decade back in the day and I can truly say, out of all the cars that I owned I miss this one the most, just pure simple unadulterated fun
My dad had an allegro for 16 years. We were always tinkering with especially the ball joints. Eventually it was handed to me as a 16 year old after been stood some time. I used to see an Equippe version driving around our neighbourhood and always wanted that car. It was so nice to look at and i have never seen one since. This was in the 80s. Really takes me back to very fond memories.
Nothing better than the thrill of chasing a barn find. This was a great find. Brilliant video. Cheers
Loved that. I drove one once my mate had a garage and needed to deliver a car to a customer. The choice was a Porsche 944 or a Renault 5 GT Turbo needless to say took the later. No other car since has put such a smile of elation on my face since. A true classic. I would love to see an update in the near future on this amazing barn find
Excellent videography and drone work, by the way - and great music with it too. Very professional! But I never expect anything less from TLBS!
Love the aerial shots at the end Johnny, such a nice way to end another great barn find video. Keep up the excellent work!
Many thanks - that is all down to Phil's cam/drone handiwork.
Awesome episode! R5 GT Turbo was my dream car when I was younger
Good team you two make. Another blinding video LBS. Thanks for your time and effort yet again.
Enjoyed watching this. Had a white one in the mid 90s and loved it, also damaged the bumper in the same place in Epping forest taking the kids out when they were little.
There's something so distinctive & pleasing about the sound of an old Renault starter motor.
Love these barn find videos. This has just made my day.
Bought a pearl white one new in November 1990. Never had as much fun since. Replaced it with a 16v golf and was disappointed!
Thanks for the memory Jonny
Love the 80s stuff. Had an 89 Peugeot 205 GTI and loved it to bits
I had an identical-looking E-plate GT Turbo in the late eighties/nineties and, upon start-up with the choke open, sounded absolutely identical to the twenty year abandoned barn find. Was a great car, glad I never crashed it because it was made of tin foil. Keep up the great videos - the content and delivery are impeccable.
Brilliant car loved my uncles one, love to see the restoration journey of this
What an episode and what a car! Amazing how good these now look when not modded
Great video and content. Love the Renault 5 GT Turbo one of the cars that symbolises how bonkers 80s cars were!
Amazing camera work. My hat is off to your camera person. Even a drone shot of the car being trailered away. Ace.
PS I drove a red one of these new when my mates had either XR3i’s or XR2’s. This picked up much quicker than either of them.
Another fabulous video Jonny 👍🏻
OMG, I love those cars. I owned Three of them throughout the late 80's early 90's. People used to talk about the Turbo lag but I loved the drive because when the turbo kicked in and the needle shot up, you could really feel the difference. I think from memory, in 1989, they were £9.800 on the road to buy new :)
Lucky enough to own one of these when I was in my twenties, brought a tear to my eye watching this. Thanks.
An old F reg came off the road also in 2001 , it had oversize turbo and twin fuel pumps fitted but standard GT spec . In third gear it flew and never failed to put a smile on the face , 0-60 was close to 5 sec , something many dispute but I know was fact . Epic car Johnny , literally a roller skate with a rocket attached 👍
Excellent barn find episode, as usual. Willy the Sparrow, what a legend.
Nice video lads ,i own a vw mk1 convertible 89 its from the same time period i absulutly love cars from this era .beautiful to see you saved this one ...
