There was a lot of that back in those days. I think it was done mostly to avoid technical difficulties that can tend to come with singing live on a live show.
I'd really love to believe that he sang it live, but his voice sounds exactly the same on the record and at the end of the clip you can clearly see it's playback.. pity. still a wonderful singer and musician overall, one of my all time favorites; with this track here being the best one for me. the movie to the soundtrack is also great (Buster).
He did sing this live. My dad was one of the sound engineers here.. Was a backing track, and he sung over it... And the end, they simply cut his mic and the music.
@@JonHop1 Thank you. I wouldn't disagree, it might simply be either bad vocal recording quality or time-pressured engineering; it might be laziness as well though, meaning to not care about the outcome at all.
@@cryoshock8137 Ill have to ask my dad if he has the original recording of this. But I remember him saying that Donahue had a terrible soundboard and setup there at that studio. My dad was with Phil from 1987-1991. He was mentored by Michel Colin while he was there. Trust me, if the sound was bad, it wasnt Phil or his teams fault. TV production and studio's really limited what you could do as an artist and as a team, and you were limited to using their sound equipment due to liability issues.
@@JonHop1 I used to work for a small company for stage construction. On one event I asked my colleague to make a recording because I liked the sound. He then gave me his headphones from the mixing console's monitor and told me that it would be unenjoyable recorded from the mixing console. And I immediately heard what he meant. The sound is mixed to fix the locality, not the headphones. So, to make a live recording you need to be specially prepared. I can imagine that the recording of Phil's voice was too hard to mix, because of background voice for example. At some point, even phase inversion can't fix a bad recording. Also, I'd like to point out that the poster of the video mentioned it being Phil's backing track 12 years ago already, which I didn't realize until now. Greetings also out to your Dad!
It would have been great if Phil had manipulated the backing track so midway through he went into a rendition of Blood on the rooftops , just to see that specific audience react.
I remember this it was the eighties thats for sure lol ,but I never took this guy really serious until he started to sing live and we all stood up to listen, also a lot of these people are gone now so a little sad to watch for me theses days BUT still entertaining.
I saw this when it first aired too - I taped it & played it many times - I remember many of the faces in the audience. Cleveland's own - Phil Donahue - really had some great guests.
Geezus. I'm a super PC fan and I can tell you all that this was in no way, shape or form, a live performance. That does NOT mean PC isn't ABSOLUTELY AMAZING, it probably just meant that Donahue either didn't allow him live vocals for whatever reason, or he wasn't feeling well enough to sing. Most artists now a days will have a love recording done of their album version and use that in the event they have to lip sync, it sounds more....live.
Do you (or anyone else) have the interview parts of this show? It was posted years ago but it's gone now, and looks like the uploader's account is gone
How do you explain that we hear the claps if he was lip syncing? And why would he if he can sing it? And making a backing track is very easy... so that's probably the case
It seems to be par for the course in the 80s every live or lip sync performance on a chat show the camera pans to the crowd who either have heard the song for the first time and don’t know it, or try to sing a long with the song even know they don’t know the words. Failing tht there’s the bad side to side jig they do which make u believe it’s lip sync and not live lol
@COLECCIONISTA80 He is singing with a backing track which has his backing vocals on it.
Yes, Except for the part where he is singing you are absolutely correct
Une des versions les plus sublime de cette chanson
Heeeeeeeeeeessssss baaaaaccckkkk
That was brilliant Thankyou 🌞 you're like my Sunshine each day Phillip Collins.
Just such a lovely upbeat feel good song ..don't make them like this anymore
What happened to this kind of music? Too bad a great artist like phil Collins had to retire! I miss this era of great music! Love ya Phil!
RIP Mr. Donahue, and great song by the other Phil. Best artist of the 80s.
It’s so sad looking at old footage when life was so much better compared to now.
Сегодняшние дни через 30 лет тоже будут казаться очень даже не плохими 😊

Look for phil Donahue Phil collins on UA-cam... you'll find the other live vocals he did on the exact same show
I think it's because Two Hearts has a lot of high notes in it that Phil decided to mime to it to save his voice.
Two ❤ ❤ living in just one mind
Two hearts believing in just one mind
a groovy kind of love was sung live.
3:15, Rick thought he was going to the Rick James concert. Now he's just praying Philip Bailey makes an appearance.
Why am I laughing so damn hard at this😂😂😭
2hearts
3:24 - it was a playback, wasn't it?
I don't think so, you can hear some little singing mistakes throughout the song.
girl at 1:41 is really gettin into it
🌍❤🎶🎶

So much technological advances but sadly no progress in music was way better in this time
