Agreed, to listen to the gentlemen of Genesis telling their professional and life stories is such a pleasure. Such lovely talented blokes ☺️ Thank you John! 🙏
Love Phil, and seeing this has made me a bit sad because of his health issues now . Can’t believe how in a few years he gone from looking like this with massive biceps to how he is today. I hope he’s doing ok anyway. He’s a fantastic drummer/musician who I’ll always love and respect ✊
Man is a legend. Unmistakable signature drum style and sound. I'm a guitar player and own a Beat Buddy drum machine and it has a Phil Collins kit loaded in it.
Phil Collins Drumming & Musicianship was very important to me growing up. I’m still a big fan. I had the opportunity to play percussion on 2 Brand X records. I played on and off with guitar player John Goodsall for 20 years. We played many concerts together and also co-wrote songs together and the instrumental song we composed together called “Dance Of Life” ended up on the Brand X (X-Files double cd)🎶 Great interview ! Thank you for posting 🙏🏻
Brand X remains one of my favourite bands of all time. I have early pressings of Unorthodox Behaviour and Moroccan Roll. Love them to bits. Genesis (the album) is also one of my favourites. That drum sound! Wow!
I just cant get enough of these interviews. With Phil or Genesis, doesnt matter... So much interesting information. Thank you! Its funny how he says his memory isn't that great at one point but, its seems he remembers Everything... the details he remembers are just astounding. Shoot, i cant remember what I had for lunch yesterday 😂
Phil, thank you for sharing your life. Interesting. Love how your mind works. Many great ideas. You are so kind. I think there is nothing you can't do. Love your "accent." Keep singing. 💞
Another great interview. My intro to Genesis was Seconds Out and And Then...so i had to go back to the Gabriel era. I prefer Phil's versions as much as i like Gabriel's work. Is there a part 2 ? Often think his work with John Martyn gets overlooked. Drumming and his background vocals, their voices work so well together.
How come this video has such sporadic availability ? It feels like PC has all his walls down, not just with is answers, but his mannerisms.... the little tics & behaviors that are only done away from public view. I love seeing him that way. God bless Phill Collins forever. 🙏 But I'm so glad it's here now!! Thank you
Its funny how so much of the stuff back then is framed, almost apologetically, as 'Spinal Tap'ish' when at that time - it was just what bands were doing. There was - as yet - no hindsight. Everyone was just having a good time.
So glad you enjoyed it !! Do please check out the playlist of all my original Phil Collins interviews here .. ua-cam.com/play/PL4-tKyR13ib5NCeViXW5sBc-yT2W8PwsB.html&si=SOkZ-fc2hSboCM9h
Phil told more stuff about Genesis here than his memoir. But to be fair, it's a book about his life not the life of Genesis. We already have a book for that from 2007, and interviews. But Johns are the best. Phil Collins about everything. Same with the other guys.
Incredible...incredible...I realize at the end he said that they hadn't covered everything and I got the impression that Phil had much more to say. Is there a continuation of this interview???
There are several segments from my follow- up interviews with Phil in the Genesis Playlist on this channel here ua-cam.com/play/PL4-tKyR13ib7F3Q6wDh0bOq38v4ZrcF0F.html
Great interview outside of the fact that Eddington completely skips over Steve Hackett's contributions and subsequent exit from the band. Drives me crazy how little credit Hackett consistently gets as a member of Genesis.
As far as I am concerned Clapton or The Who (or even The Beatles) never made anything near the level of sophistication and depth that Genesis did. Songs like One For The Vine (especially the live version on Three Sides), Ripples, Mama, Home By The Sea, Dreaming While You Sleep, It's Gonna Get Better, Snowbound, Behind The Lines, Heathaze... The list goes on. I don't think Phil realize and/or appreciate the musical diamond he was at the helm of.
It was one of the most important revolution in modern music for all it brought to music and we owe it a dozen genres and subgenres but ok. It ALSO still exists. What`s next? let me guess, rap is crap?
Interviewer: "(after punk) you managed to steer the band towards songs that were "..." more melodic and had some emotion in them". Really? I guess he meant "making the music more repetitive and easy to digest, and the lyrics more about relationships between man and woman". Because music can't possibly be more melodic and emotional than 70's era Genesis ... Sorry, John Edginton, you did a fine job, but that question needed to be rephrased ;-)
Thanks Anders for your comment. Do I agree with you ? Perhaps more now than I did then in Jan 2014. I agree that 70s works like Suppers Ready and Musical Box are certainly full of emotion. Some of Phil’s stuff has a more personal kind of emotion. Tony Banks has also said that btw
In fact, try to find more emotional songs that Mad Man Mood, Ripples, Your Own Special Way or Say It's Alright Joe - all originating from before the period in question. Then, I think it's a popular wrong belief that it was Phil who single-handedly steered the band towards simpler stuff. I am convinced all three acted in agreement on that.
I regard it as social phenomenon that had its roots and consequences. Musically I am not interested in it at all. But I refuse to respect punk for one reason: atrocious hatred the movement directed at so much great, beautiful, precious music. Punk infected music press and critics to share the same hate. Fantastic musicians like Ant Phillips could not find a contract (apparently Malcolm McLaren personally discouraged labels from signing Ant). Had punk done its basic sounds without hating some greatest musicians, I'd just ignore it, but how it was, I disrespect it.
That wasn't the only incorrect comment in the sentence. He also said "this was before King Crimson". Bruford had already made three studio albums with King Crimson, after which they'd broken up (only to be reformed in 1981).
To be fair, Phil later questions whether Bill was in Asia, and says "forget that - he was in UK" - which is true. As we all know, it was his colleague in UK, John Wetton, who went on to form Asia.
I think I get what he is saying. Keep in mind that phil, in the 70s, was very much into fusion, jazz and more “loosen” styles of playing. Hacket was pretty much a (brilliant) composer. He was absolutely commited to play for the song, and his guitar work is not flashy or “relaxed”. Hacket guitar is, in someways, more straightfoward and that was different from the more freestyle phil was more into in said period. Both musicians are, regardless, genius.
Definitely nothing personal. I know exactly what he means. Hackett was very Frippian in his playing, drummers intuitively want some groove to play along to and feel. Steve isn't groovy like that.
But Guys , what’s the use of saying that towards a fellow Musician, that’s not a positive thing, watch that 1981 interview in NYC with Phil saying He’s ran into Peter several times and He’s ran over Steve … Let’s admit it , Phil has never spoken well about Steve Hackett, there must be something personal … Thanks for your response, Cheers !
@@trevizons to be honest, I think none of Genesis members ever spoke hacket very well. Hacket was the only one in the band to really dig into Prog Rock, but to the point of considering simpler and shorter songs uninteresting and poor. Peter, Phil, Mike and Tony were pretty happy writing more concise and direct songs, as they all eventually did later in their careers.
@@trevizons I've only seen and heard Phil say good things about Steve on a personal level and they get along, but they are very different and I've heard him use the "stiff" analogy a few times and he is correct. Tony, Mike and Phil are the natural players and songwriters, it comes more naturally to them. Steve is a good player and he fit with 70s Genesis but he's not a natural or a guitar legend.

Excellent drummer and seems like a nice person especially when dealing with those posh and picky public school kids... Thanks for the post!

Phil is an awesome communicator and always affable. The tonic that helped Genesis' soaring success.
I'm sure it didn't hurt (but should we just forget all about Gabriel ...)

The image of a Genesis vs. Python football match will stay for me forever.....
Phil, I wish you would think about a full-length documentary movie about your amazing life. It's a creative outlet you should explore.

Phil Collins is a national institution. His music will live on forever. Also comes across as a really nice down-to-earth bloke.
Love the video, but hate the adverts every 5 minutes
He said to you more interesting things about Genesis that he wrote in his autobiography "Not Dead Yet"😮

I’m lucky I guess for having worked my way backward through Genesis’ material.
I never knew about the costumes until years after absorbing the music.

@JOHNEDGINTONDOCUMENTARIES thank you so much.
Nursery crime is when the rubber started hitting the road with Genesis.
They were more solid with that lineup then before.

Thank you mister Edginton. Was this your most recent interview with Phil?
Yes - one of three interviews with Phil in 2014

I don't know the early material as well
but I'm going to get into those Peter Gabriel albums now 😊
The return of the giant hogweed, classic song
Punk Stunk! lol Glad it got over fairly quick.

The ‘ever present’ Tony Smith I hear in the background.
Tony was not actually physically present in the room. The background voice is my cinematographer
It must have been lovely to have met and spoke to Phil I have always wanted to meet Phil in person maybe one day x x

Still love Stagnation from Trespass much more with John Mayhew. With Phil and Steve it sounds like a cover from a mediocre band.
