As someone who works out a lot and has been in the game for about 9 years at this point this is just my viewpoint on candy in working out. Does it work? Yes. But like Matt said, the crash hits hard. So what a lot of people will do is before working out you would eat a slow digesting carb like oats, about 30 mins - 1 hour before depending. Then, if you start hitting that wall, then while you workout you eat that candy (Personal choice is gummy bears) to give you that sugar spike you want and when you do crash, you won't crash during the workout. Again, this is just my view of this topic but I do love seeing videos like this and want more!

I'd like to say the real value of candy when working out is that the energy boosts. Since they're such quick, easy access energy I find it more effective to eat in the middle of the workout to replenish energy. Of course, if your goal is to lose weight, this is not a good option, but if your goal is to gain muscle I find this to he a great way to get you through your final sets.

I'm excited to say that I think I actually legitimately can answer Matt's question on this. The fact that is actually sour candy is arbitrary most of the time it's just whatever the lifter likes best. It originated from powerlifting culture, in fact there's even a fitness life style UA-camr called Max chewning who came up with the line of sour candies because powerlifters tend to use sour candies to supplement their workouts. The reason is powerlifter than particular it because their workouts can be upwards of two to three hours and they're mainly very high intensity outputs of a few reps. The candies are away to keep allowing us to do that high output. It's strictly in order to make sure our muscles can still lift a lot of weight it's not necessarily good for anyone who's looking to have a good workout or trying to lose that in fact it might be doing the opposite is purely to hit our strength numbers for competition. I will admit most of the people I know do tend to go with sour candy❤.

I could see an additional reason for going with sour candy in particular, though it is specifically for early morning workouts. The punch that comes from whatever gives it the sour flavor (I believe I have heard that it is malic acid for warheads at least?) can potentially wake you up more in the morning, adding a bit more immediate alertness and potential energy on top of what the sugar is already doing (both in sour and regular candy)

There is one error made on the video though, PWO does not contain glucose like sourcandy. There might be a difference here depending on brand and country but looking at most PWOs they don't even need to print thier calories on the container. And those that do print that are about 50 or so cals per serving and that's mostly protein.

When going for long hikes I will usually take some hard candy with me - usually lifesavers or a similar small, hard candy. Hit a wall, have a candy and drink a little water. You definitely don't want more than a couple of grams of sugar to bust a wall, and they tend to keep you going long after the few calories you took in burn off. Generally an 11-calorie lifesaver every half hour of strenuous hiking can keep you going for a long time.
So infrequent but sustained input of a small number of calories of straight sugar seems to be a very effective method at sustaining a good workout.
I'd certainly look into very small-calorie sweet items as a "pre-workout" incentive or as a way to get past walls.

  • @dadbodthirsttrap

The first time I heard about using candy for exercise was Jim Stoppani who would eat a few pieces at the end of the work out along with his protein supplement. He said that the fast glucose spike would help refuel your muscles so the protein wouldn't be used for energy and be focused on repairing the damage of the workout. Plus it had the psychological effect of rewarding you for doing the work in the first place.

Exercise helps strengthen your muscles, including your heart, and lungs, and helps regulate different hormones that affect mood and sleep and all kinds of things. We all do ourselves a big disservice when we think the only reason to work out is to burn calories and lose weight. If going to the gym is something that makes you miserable and you have to bribe yourself with candy, maybe try something else! Take a yoga class, take a walk, go for a swim, learn to dance, and remember that movement is healthy whether or not you have a fitness tracker telling you so

I am someone who has a problem getting to the gym, once there, I can workout fine, but getting over the hurdal of showing up is my problem.
But the thing I recommend for people like me, is to do and find what you enjoy doing to workout.
I am not a "fan" of cardio, but I find the act of reaching the target goal (mine is 2 miles in 30 min on the elliptical) is something that makes it so, so much more rewarding psychologically.
When I started trying to go workout seriously, I started it by doing the cycle bike for 5-10 minutes. And tried to increase that time by a minute, or add a tenth to the total difference between each workout. Meeting and then beating my goal is the best motivator I personally found that I wasn't very conscious of in the beginning. Before I knew it, I was hitting 15 minutes consistently. Then, I decided to try something that let me do more with my arms, the elliptical. And hitting the wall of 20 minutes was something I kept failing to do. But when I finally did, I was so happy I pushed to 25. And the same at 30. Now, I have to stop myself from doing more to see how far I can just push myself to. And shifted my focus to be on some of the other measurements. Distance, speed, calorie total burned and current rate of calorie burning.
I have done 2 miles at my fastest just last week at 30:03, down from my first time reaching 2 miles at like 33:00.
I also try and keep the calorie rate at 15-16 a minute, which isn't the hardest highest I can reach, but what I have found lets me reach the other goal, 500 calories burned in a session. (It is in part to burn calories, and in part to give me a number to reach towards, and makes me feel accomplished for reaching. Because that is almost an entire meals worth of work I have put into this task. (And yes, it isn't the most accurate measurement of my calorie burning, but number go up, happy juice go up too.)) Then there is the mini goal of a .33 miles in five minutes. Like a Speedrun stretch or section timer.
It is something that works for me for cardio. The same with working out with machines. Managing to continuessly reaching a difficult set goal is so satisfying.
But my hardest workout is getting in the car to go do it. And maybe this will work, idk. Wish me luck folks, and I wish the same for everyone else to

Varying slightly by the type of ramen (cheap stuff or good quality like a ramen shop in Japan), the answer is definitely "not very sustainable". It might be cheap and filling, but it isn't very nutritious. A lot of carbs, a fair amount of calories, almost nothing in terms of vitamins, low but not awful protein. Nutritionally speaking, a Big Mac is better for you, having more protein, fewer carbs, only slightly more sugar, and more vitamins by weight. Ramen is a lot cheaper, of course, but if nutritionally it's worse for you than a Big Mac, then it's not all that sustainable in terms of health.
That does change if you're adding stuff to it instead of just eating it as is, but then that also increases the cost making it less viable for a college student than eating it as is.
Of course, if that's all you can afford, there's nothing really wrong with that. It's not your fault the US government screws over the population in countless ways.

Common in powerlifting to eat something with QUICK carbs like candy to give a boost of energy. And more specifically during the workout. So still having pre-workout and/or high carb meal before.

I think that's the variable he didn't account for. Your friend, like the people in the videos, used a gummy based sour candy. Mat pat and his wife were eating warheads, which is a hard candy, so it's more sugar than a gummy candy and it lacks the gelatin which is 1. An animal product and 2. Possibly affects how quickly the sugar is digested thus lowering the crash.
They were so focused on it being a sour candy, they didn't even take that into account.

The main reason folks do this is when powerlifting, the quick burst of energy helps to fuel the never ending quest for new PR's. Aside from that, most only really use them intra workout, when the workouts are longer sessions.

My highschool anatomy and physiology teacher had us in 3rd block, which was when lunch was, and since I had B lunch, we left about halfway through class for lunch and came back for the other half.
He believed that after eating a meal, your body devoted more energy to digestion and therefore, your brain was less effective at learning. So he shoved all our lessons into the first half of class and let us do whatever we wanted after lunch. I napped in that class after lunch every day and I'm convinced he was right.

I learned this technique early in high school, but I combined the fast burning/hard crash of candy with the slow burn/longer energy stores of something like sun chips. When you eat sugar, your body can access that high energy easily, but the trade off is that you feel the crash extremely fast & hard. But if you eat something that burns slow, but lasts long, like nuts, fruit, or sun chips, it offsets the crash because you have a different energy store

when I was competing as a powerlifter the candy thing was big, however not as a pre workout. we ate it as an intraworkout sugar to give us quick burning carbs to keep lifting. It wasn't a whole bag tho, it was usually like 5-10 sour patch kids or Swedish fish, it didn't have to be sour, just most of us preferred it. When I was trying working with a body building nutritionist they had me drinking dextrose powder and bcaas in my water instead that I started to drink about 20-30 min into my workout. the sour strips candy was literally invented by a powerlifter/UA-cam influencer that couldn't find sour enough candy. So that is another reason why that particular candy shows up a lot also

I only eat one meal a day, but in the middle of the day I often get a craving for candy (usually sour candy), and that's probably because sugar is a simple carb and gives a burst of energy for your body quickly. Eating a bit of sugar compared to a plate of spaghetti is gonna be way better for your waistline (assuming you're not diabetic etc.) So having a sugar spike before the gym makes complete sense.
