Man, I was just thinking the same thing! Hadn’t listened to this in AGES and it brings back so many memories. Pure nostalgia! These guys were great. Still are!!
The Xbox 360 playlist and the one flim clip for 'fear of a blank planet' I saw on headbanger's ball are the cause of me getting into Porcupine Tree. I listened to this while playing some mediocre 360 games; 'Kingdom Under Fire' and 'perfect Dark Zero'.
One of best progressive rock bands ever... they're able to communicate true emotions, feelings and a musical style really really out of common !!! I must absolutely see a their future live concert !!
It’s funny going back and listening to this song after hearing what Steve said about it being a contrivance, seeing as how it is one of the very first porcupine tree songs I ever heard.
I have to admit, when I discovered PT, I didn't even know about Prog Rock so I thought this was just regular good ol' rock n roll..... Pop, whatever you call it. Great songwriting
Damn this song rocks!!! Glad I'm alone and can jam on it 10 times back to back if I feel like it!!! Oh, and I have long hair and I am flip pin' it around "Hell Yeah" !!!
A friend told me its because Wilson thought this was a bit too mainstream for his liking - not sure how true that is but maybe why he hasn't performed it live.
In a recent interview he stated that the song was written mainly to be radio friendly. So with the song he connects the feeling of being pushed by the label to write this song for marketing purposes and not for the sake of music.
I don't remember Did something in my past create a hole? Don't use your gender To drive a stake right through my soul I live to function On my own is all I know No friends to mention No distraction, nowhere to go Shallow, shallow Give it to me Scissors cutting out your anger Shallow, shallow No good to me, not if you bleed Bite your tongue, ignore the splinter This city drains me Well maybe it's the smell of gasoline The millions pain me It's easier to talk to my PC
TrevRockOne haha as an artist i can agree, we don't always like what we do, even if others do. it's a paradoxical sort of thing, alot of writers, painters, and musicians hate what they do. i think this is a great song :P
TheBushwooky In a way, tool and porcupine have both distinct and different sounds that they work to get, I see what you are saying I mean they are both prog metal bands but it really depends on the songs, but I wouldn't say its like opiate, in opiate Maynard uses a lot of rage in his singing other than steven where he is more laid back, not in a bad way, I would say its like AEnima more than anything
That’s the point, the album is supposed to be about (supposedly) a toxic relationship and its effect on the main character. Open car is still a pretty similar song to this one, but something like In Absentia might be more up your alley

Shallow was written and sung here by Andrew Hopkins. Andrew is also the drummer. Andrew's friend Mattie is the guitarist. He posted it anonymously. It was then picked up by Steve Wilson.
I absolutely love this song, but the quality of this record is absolute shit. This song especially is clipped to holy hell because of the "loudness wars" of the early 2000's. The content of the album is amazing, but I can't stand the sound quality. Too compressed and loud. Sad because Steve usually puts out the best mixes of anyone I've ever heard.

idk if anyone remembers but this song was on the xbox360 music when they still had it back then. Crazy!

Hell yea! That's how I discovered this band lol. Killer tune!
The og white Xbox
I totally remember. The good old days.

So much more than progressive. Steven writes some of the greatest rock riffs ever.
You got goddamn right. There is a riff in "Anesthetize" that it's the heaviest riff that I've ever heard in my life, so simple and so powerful
Still the best-sounding album I've ever heard. This album is a masterclass in production
Man, I was just thinking the same thing! Hadn’t listened to this in AGES and it brings back so many memories. Pure nostalgia! These guys were great. Still are!!
Listen to some of Rich Mousers work Transatlantic Neal Morse Band etc
You should see them live, the things they can do with quadraphonic sound in a huge stage are glorious
What a great snare sound
IKR!
It's has the right amout of mids in it ,love it!
used to listen to this while playing halo 3 in 2008.
memories man
Yes, the 360 was loaded with playlist :,3
I wish I had checked out this band when a friend told me about them 2002. I started listening a few years ago, I missed a really great recommendation.
The Xbox 360 playlist and the one flim clip for 'fear of a blank planet' I saw on headbanger's ball are the cause of me getting into Porcupine Tree.

@ Exactly, I saw the announcement yesterday about their upcoming new album. They are definitely back!!
The drumming on this song is incredible!
Honestly haven't listened to this album in something like 7 years. Amazing stuff.
Song came preloaded on the original Xbox 360, racing round on Project Gotham Racing 3 with this in the background, good times :)
It amazing how this guy has created hundreds of songs, and almost all of them are great!

Kick arse song!!! The production is amazing.
Steven Wilson is a god damn musical genius. F ing love this song.
I can't understand why Steven Wilson doesn't like song.. it's just fantastic
Probably because it's a "single" song rather than a Prog one, but sometimes simple is better imho
This brings me back to my memories of listening to this song while playing "Call of Duty 2" on the xbox 360. Man, life was so simple.
Badass riff 🤘 one of my favorites
Love their heavy stuff
love how prog is re emerging
Green Pretzel Prog w a bluesy twist.
It’s funny going back and listening to this song after hearing what Steve said about it being a contrivance, seeing as how it is one of the very first porcupine tree songs I ever heard.
So far my favorite PT song, love this. The energy is incredible and intense.
This is easily one of the best PT song ever, for me
Incredible opening riff. Makes me wish I had long hair to headbang with.
Legends never die
When my mom heard this song at my sweet 16 party 14 years ago, she thought it was Nickelback, but I keep telling her it's Porcupine Tree🤣
Shallow Is A Great Straight Up Rock Song That Totally Rocks And Kicks Major League Ass And Is A Fantastic Wonderful Masterpiece By Porcupine Tree.

I just don't understand why Wilson has never performed this song live ever yet!?
A friend told me its because Wilson thought this was a bit too mainstream for his liking - not sure how true that is but maybe why he hasn't performed it live.
Steven Wilson apparently does not like this song, I read it in an interview with Steven that was talking about his best song with PT
its very hard to sing

TrevRockOne maybe he thinks it's THE SHIT - a lot of difference there, haha
I still love it regardless of what Steve thinks man.
