This is actually how Barney works on the tv show
FYI at 7:47 that’s actor….Young actor Christian Slater was the middle tall kid “real average family” reviews after watching the movie. But man how young he is. Funny how Hollywood is setup.
I wonder if we will ever see a grounded, realistic, and simplistic telling of the TMNT like this again. It's my favorite movie of all time. I worry about all the new films rumored - TMNT projects have a history of trying too much at once or going way off the source. All I want is a retelling of City At War, keep it gritty and dark while maintaining the TMNT charm! Ah, one can dream! "Where do they come up with this stuff?!"
Well unfortunatly that is never gonna happen again since todays generation have cheap taste, and nickelodeon targets the new generation, doesnt give a damn about the older tmnt fans. And ever since peter laird sold his part of the share to nickelodeon, you shouldnt be expecting anything good from the franchise in the near future. Unless kevin eastman sells his part of the share to warner bros. Which is never gonna happen. So i guess us older turtle fans just have to rewatch the 2003 series, and just enjoy the older cartoons.
@@um4765um sad but seemingly true. At least we have the classics!
Will always have this movie which still holds up today. Nickelodeon will never give us a take on the turtles like the 1990 film ever.
You say you want tmnt to be dark and gritty then quote a arc from the mirage run which had tons of silly and nonsensical stories some of which were canon
I don't think we ever will and I don't think we need to.
This movie was the perfect blend of the comic origins and the 80s cartoon that made it so popular. It's also a product of its time with the crime infested New York of the 80s. That's all gone now and I don't think TMNT can ever really be like this again.
This movie will never old me it's forever a classic I love the Ninja Turtles
The only way this movie can be better now is if there was a Anniversary release with all the behind-the-scenes details, original interviews, and reunion talk with the cast and crew.
It's coming out in 4k when the new movie comes out
@@ctv8555 don’t give one false hope
Make it so!
Raphael was always my favorite. Josh was the only guy who did the voice (of Raph) as well as wearing the suit.
that would be great!!
All the latest cgi couldn’t do a better job. Still the best tmnt movie ever made from every aspect.
I dunno about that, I mean just look at Gollum from Lord of the Rings from 2001. Sure its older but still think Gollum looked better than the CGI turtles. Like I really do think the latest CGI could of done a waaaaaaaaay better job.
The first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie is a MASTERPIECE. We haven't seen the Ninja Turtles since. All of the best CGI and modern technology in the world right now still can't even come close to that level of greatness. It says so much about where we are at today and how far things have fallen.
I mean, I thought the second was nearly as good. And if it isn't, please don't spoil it for still sometimes 7 year old me.
@@JosephCox-yx4ds you should go check out when the Ninja Turtles were on Oprah bro
@@JosephCox-yx4ds First was perfect origin story, second was an amazing follow up and i know people hate on the third but its so fucking bad its fantastic in my opinion and this series is hands down one my favorite series period
The second was not that far behind. 1 & 2 pure gold.
This movie still holds today ❤
With cell phones and the Internet, this movie is beginning to lose its impact with the younger generation. Really sad
This movie will never die...It's like how corny the wizard of oz is but still stays relevant to watch
I agree 👍
TMNT is still one of my all time favourite of all time
I’ve never met anyone who remembered the cricket quote, so to hear that it’s beloved by many fans is heartening!
i do. also the comment he makes about casey jones bat. Raphael catches bat then says.. A Jose Canseco bat... tell me you didnt pay money for this :-D
@@hometownhobbies103 I’m from Australia so I had no idea who Jose Canseco was until a couple of years ago, but Raph’s delivery clearly showed a lack of respect! Brilliant
Love this line.
There is a famous crumpet shop where I live (in the US). Whenever I walk by, I always joke to the tourists visiting it that they’re going to finally understand cricket.
Then they didn't watch the movie
The dark gritty but still fun and light hearted is the perfection for the tmnt. Not going to bright or too dark. This balance is what they need. Also the suits with cgi faces would be the best way to make a tmnt movie today. I remember that the movie Where the Wild Things Are was made like this and looks very impressive.
I agree
Also, that foot clan warehouse got me as a child, I wanted to go there. Looks super fun. Skateboard ramp, video games, basketball, rock music, and a whole bunch of other stuff - yeah, they were stolen goods and recruiting for a clan, but gotta give them credit for knowing how to entice kids 'rejected from the outside world.'
Yes very true. The warehouse scene is so well shot. It shows how abandon kids will most likely turn to crime. It showed how badass Shredder’s empire was. Shredder really knew how to manipulate young people to get them to join the Foot. This film is definitely one of the greatest comic book movies ever made.
I'm glad the director stuck to his guns about the film, he made some great choices that we all love, I never knew the film was shot in North Carolina which is where I'm from so thats a major plus for me!!! Great video
I like the way the opening ended up. The Turtles are slowly revealed. The fact that we just hear them first, then we see just Raph's mask and eyes, then we see them in silhouette, then the full suits are revealed in all their glory when Leo leaps into frame, and the others follow. As cool a visual as the giant turtle shells surfacing is, I think the reveal plays better without it. I'd love to see a director's cut, though, especially with the additional footage they shot at the farm location.
TMNT 1990 is so good, I wish the sequels were as good as the first one with the dark tone.
It would've been great to see Bebop & Rocksteady and other cool villains in the sequels.
I wonder was the 3rd the last lived movie?
@@steelstreet3765 Yes, it was the last one made. There was a 4th film in development, but that got scrapped.
@@barbarianorc8301 you can thank Karen’s for that they complained about how Dark and violent the first movie was so that why they made it lighthearted for the sequels.
@@caden141 Who is Karen?
Still the best TMNT movie, nothing else comes close.
Holy crap i never imagined how difficult the suits or just the entire production of TMNT was. Something that has been watched probably over a hundred times by me and my brothers , heck even my parents can never express how grateful to have this movie in our young lives. It's something amazing how even back then those campy movies of the 90s just feel still to this day unrivaled, I wish i could see more TMNT movies similar to the first two, three had it's issues but it just seems they were being run too hard and fast and so couldn't get much of anything right.
Cool to know Jim still used his monitor and elevated floor techniques for this
Honestly....my favorite film of all time.
Grossly underrated and WAY ahead of it's time
In my late 30s and I still watch this movie
After watching this movie, I would go outside and try to mimic all the flips and tricks the turtles did in the film. I could even remember how myself and a couple of friends thought that we could move out of our parents house and into the sewers. Incredible movie.
I used to imitate those moves you said with my book bag on as if I actually had a 🐢 she'll on my back
@@Cogic 🤣🤣🤣🤣 so did I. My friends and I would make weapons from tree branches, broomsticks, and whatever else we could find and train in the backyard like they did on April's farm in the 1990 movie. Lol
@@kwesiwilliams1188 Wow so who wore the blind fold you?
@@Cogic we all actually put shirts over our heads in a way that we looked more like a band of little ninjas rather than ninja turtles. Lol!!! Those were good times.
I never knew they shot alot of shots in NC!! lived here my whole life and to hear that one of if not my fav movie of all time was shot right here in Wilmington Nc which is not to far from me at all. It's amazing how this movie STILL stand up to today!! Man I would LOVE for them to make another movie like the 1st one or even the 2nd one, I mean they would literally be printing money!!!
Yeah I knew that they filmed in Wilmington years ago back when I was a kid watching it on VHS (being such a huge turtle fan I looked at all the end credits lol) but it still blew my mind seeing as I'm from North Carolina 🙂
@@brookswilliams5239 dang that's pretty good, cause I never picked up on that as a kid, and when ya find out a movie like that has been made from where we live that's pretty awesome!!
@@TimScottDT Most definitely bro 💯
Gotta agree with the dark and gritty of the movie. For me, it gave the feel of the raw and gritty look of Kevin and Peter’s original Mirage comics at the time, and it felt like how actual New York City looks and feels. They got it RIGHT.
This first film was amazing. It nailed the gritty dark feel of the comics. They even do a nod to Kevin and Peter! Sam Rockwell says "check out the east warehouse on Lairdman island".
I have so much more respect and appreciation for this epic movie, now. One of my favorites of all time.
There should be a Director's Cut of TMNT.
I agree. Considering how much "lost" cut footage that exists.
@@maximusprime3459 let's hope they dig out the footage soon from a vault 🤞🏻
I was amazed to discover Steve Barron directed some of the greatest music videos in history, as well as the greatest Turtles on screen and to this day one of the best comic book movies
The movie blew me away. I think the suits and animatronics were so well done and very believable, specially with the lighting. I still have not brought myself to watch the Michael Bay movies.
You'd be disappointed. Megan fox is dreadful
TMNT 1990 FOREVER!! 💯!
The Crow was also filmed at this same studio in Wilmington, my sister in law worked at the hospital they took Brandon Lee too. RIP. Another classic movie
This came out on my birthday, what a great present, I love this movie!!!
I will always love this version of the turtles. Those suits are pure magic.
You can definitely see how they eventually ended up with a more colorful film like the studio wanted in TMNT 3. But your spot on with the lighting for the first movie. It was dark in a way that as a kid, I was scared to watch, but desperatly wanted more of.
Even as a 10 year old kid I immediately recognized and appreciated the dark gritty realistic look of this movie. It was nothing at all like I expected and everything that I wanted
My favorite part was when Don calls Casey a claustrophobic and he replies that he never even looked at another guy
That’s funny cuz know “they” think we’re afraid of them.
Lol its funny because that joke would never get past the censors today.
@@metaloverload7374 it’s funnier because it was way over any kid’s head.
I need a well done story game as taken care of and well developed as spiderman ps4 for the turtles. How awesome would an open world New York ninja turtle game be. Where they each have side missions to do so you can play as them all but then choose which one in the main story.
"Dark and gritty but still fun at the same time", this is what the people who are making the TMNT movies these days don't seem to understand. Michael Bay and Paramount leaned to heavily on the 1980's cartoon for the last two movies and that's just not a good basis for a live action movie, it's just too...well, cartoony. The Mirage Studios comic book, and also the IDW comic book, both have foot holds in reality, so using story elements from those would be better. Heck, I wouldn't mind seeing the IDW back story used in a movie, ie Oroku Saki was a legendary evil warrior of the Foot Clan back in feudal Japan who gets resurrected in the modern day by Karai. Meanwhile, Oroku's ancient heroic nemesis Hamato Yoshi and his four teenage sons are revealed to have been reincarnated as a rat and four turtles and they regain their humanity through their mutations into anthropomorphic humanoids at StockGen, Baxter Stockman's lab, which also works in the connection to General Krang. It's a perfect back story that doesn't have to be dumbed down like in the 2014 movie and I really think it could work. I would also use the body suits/CGI faces method for Splinter and the turtles because I think it could really look amazing.
Side note: I remember that scene from the trailer of the turtles' shells popping out of the water but up until now I never knew where it was going to be used in the movie. It is kind of a shame that we didn't get to see the bigger opening, but what we did get is still great. It's just to bad that we may never get a special edition with all of the deleted footage restored and placed back into the movie. That - would be - the s#%t!!
I really liked the 1990 teenage mutant ninja turtles movie because it was pretty dark like the tmnt mirage comics but it also mix many elements from the tmnt 1987 cartoon but still great ninja turtles movie 🥷🥷🥷🐢🐢🐢🐢🍕🍕🍕
Still by far the best TMNT movie.
Man this movie was one of the greatest
love this movie
I wish they’d make a new film that is mostly the costumes with a sprinkle of the cgi like he’s saying. Loved this video! Thanks
This was amazing, l love all this BTS footage
I totally agree on the dark lighting and mood of the first movie being a positive rather than a negative.
Just about every TMNT property has been painstakingly attempting to recapture the original animated series when, for me, they should seriously consider taking more from this film. The Turtles, for me, have never been better than this first film.
I liked that 2012 was a hybrid of 87 and the 90's movie. I remember there being an Epic battle, Leo - not Raph gets the shit beaten our of him (and even used that as the excuse to recast Jason Biggs with Seth Green- Leos throat was damaged in the scuffle) and they go to the country house to train and come up with a plan to rescue splinter. I never did finish the show but I think I stopped around mid season 4. think it would be possible for someone with decent editing skills to take each seasons main arc and turn that into a 2hr movie ignoring most of the mutant of the week aspects.
I say it before I'll say it again. The director's cut needs to released.
Everything that was mentioned in this video in regards too the movie is spot on too why so many people adore this movie. One other thing is the musical score of the original movie that was so well done fit in with the dark tone of the way the movie was filmed gritty street crime kinda way.
The dark grit is a big part of what makes this movie hold up better then later attempts.
Yes I agree this movie to me is still perfect! I was 10 when my mom brought the movie home, and went nuts! 😂 God I love this movie!
I'm so glad I was able to find this movie at a local Thrift store for like 2 bucks. It's so good!
Rewatched this movie the other day. It still looks awesome.
Quoting splinter you are ninja you must stick to the shadows, their world can never be ours.... pizza is okay
Hey The Old Turtle Den can you do a ranking of all 5 TMNT TV Shows ranked from worst to best please.
This was amazing.
Also cool to hear the original TMNT was mostly filmed in my state NC. I don't know that many movies that film here, so its nice to know one of my childhood favorite films did. :)
Can you imagine if Steve Barron directed the 1995 Casper movie? It would've had WAY less forced pop culture and more on the emotions and themes as originally intended. But do you think he would've made the ghosts CG or by Jim Henson's Creature Shop? I think he would've made Casper look like the 1996 Pinocchio just white and bald. (Honestly would look creepy as hell) So maybe he would stick to CG instead.
Yeah everyone loses here, he lost a big fat pay check, also working with Spielberg, and we wouldve gotten an incredible movie of Casper that i cant even imagine.
And maybe we could have had Steve Barron as the next Steven Spielberg over JJ. Abrams because unlike that creative hack manufacturer director, Steve actually has an artistic and thoughtful element to his filmmaking which TMNT 1990 is a good example of such qualities.
5:40 to hear all this is amazing for the time. It's also very sad if you see a video out there of how the suits held up it's like a horror show they look like zombies you would think they would be preserved very well but unfortunately I guess what they were made out of it just didn't hold up or someone obviously didn't take care of it. But when they made the movie it had to have been being made what 89 possibly 88 it came out in 1990 I believe so that's just insane how great of a job Jim Henson did I believe his last work was on the show The Dinosaurs I believe I could be wrong such amazing work
I think I like the Turtle suits or CGI part. It could really work
This movie will always be apart of my childhood
Thanks for all your faithful research! I also love the podcast since I commute a lot and don't have time to watch videos.
I love the dark, gritty tone of the movie.. similar to Batman and Dick Tracy, which was the style in the late 80s/early 90s.
This was great! Ive never heard the commentary and this was a good peek in to it. Thanks for posting it!
This movie is ahead of all movies. Timeless feeling in this movie, never duplicated. I love this dark and grittness too.
Ty for making this. I absolutely love TMNT 1. Recently just re-watched 2 and 3 and they were both better than I remember
Yeah the German dvd is great got it years ago lots of extra clips in the menu to look at .and the commentary shows real insight, I hope some day it gets a release with any cut clips put back
It's bullshit we never got that, especially since it's an Amery creation to begin with.
Dude, I love your channel... so many great videos! This is one of my all time fave movies, TMNT 1990... I've seen it so many times that I almost have it all memorized, line for line. But until I watched this, I really had no idea how much work really went into bringing this thing to life. Incredible!
What brilliant movie-making!
Thank you sir. Great channel. Great content. This is one of my all time favorite movies. I was a kid and I passed this one down to my son. I appreciate the information you share; behind the scenes footage and stories.
I love the stuff you share and appreciate the work you put into your channel to bring us these insights.
One about costumes was eye opening! Thank you!
This movie never gets old. I just watched it again as a 39 year old and loved every minute of it. I can't say the same for the other movies, newer ones included.
Loved that they used the same location for the crow film for the burning pawn shop
I'm no longer a fan of TMNT, but that beginning of the video where you say how special this movie is was 100% spot on. I didn't realize when I was kid, but this was the high water mark of the Turtles, in my opinion. There's been some other good stuff, but not enough to win me back over. I still get happy to see they're making new TMNT things, but it isn't being made for me anymore.
Dark was the right choice! I saw it in the theater when it came out and its probably the best theater experience in my lifetime!
Classic film. Why hasn't a grounded film like this been done recently
I've noticed that when a director/actor is getting flack about something they have done and the director/actor fight for that thing, it's usually the the defining thing that everyone loved about the movie.
A rated R director's cut version is long overdue.
So I'll never forget the hype surrounding this movie when it came out and I remember as a kid getting magazines to read all about anything I could find about it.
There was one called fanzine or something like that, and I distinctly recall reading that originally the film got an R rating and that they had to go back and heavily toned down the violence so they could score that precious PG-13 and make sure all the kids got in. So all these years I've wondered why has there never been a director's cut put out that's a rated R version? There's never been a better time now that all us kids that were able to see that PG-13 movie are all grown up and then some now and would love to get our hands on that original violence filled R rated version.
I'd love a new 4k transfer of the 1990 movie with the director commentary. I'd also love if those deleted scenes do exist to be included too.
A movie like this can never be made again. Saw this in theaters when i was 6. I’m so grateful. I doubt any original creator would see but truly thank you so much for giving us the single turtle movie. No else could do it on this level and in this style again
Man, I'd love Baron directing a modern TMNT movie and really bringing his vision from the first film to modern audiences.
I like how they pointed out how we could’ve had more screen time
The first movie was AMAZING! My number 1 movie of all time!
To this day this is still my favorite movie. I was in 6th grade when it came out. I still have the stickers from them.
4:30 that's really dope that you actually talk to a writer of such an iconic film that is really dope that had to be one of the highlights of your life I would think it would be one of the highlights of mine
I think I may have watched this one when I was little. Though it may be the sequel I’m thinking of, but I may have to find these on eBay and watch them if they’re this good
Loved how dark it was. The movie was great. I watched it all the time. Wish they would have actors in costumes again.
As a kid, the original TMNT was so gritty, it made me appreciate more adult themed movies of that day. I didn't like kiddy movies after that. I wanted to watch serious movies with dramatic storylines.
I honestly think TMNT helped me grow up a bit.
I still can’t believe that Kevin Clash puppeteers Splinter is the one who have been puppeteering Elmo for 20 plus years.
The dark and grittiness is what made it real for me as a kid. When Splinter sat Raph down for a heart to heart I really thought they were alive.
Thank you so much for sharing this with us!!
Thank you so much for covering this! First movie is the best and always will!!
What do you mean "even people who are no longer Turtles fans"? How do you stop being a TMNT fan?
idd still prefer completely practical turtle suits including animatronic faces if one is to be made these days, the technology on it must have advanced light years since the early 90s, most of us didnt even have cellphones back then so it woudnt be 60 pounds of electronics anymore. the movement of the faces can most likely just be preprogrammed to go allong with the proper lines nowadays ( like a big advanced teddy ruxpin doll) the biggest expectation with a new movie coming out would be that it will have to be really good to surpass the first, and given the first has most of the iconic things already, i dont think it will. and if they do make a true life action sequal im hoping it just picks up the main story from the end of the 2nd film and we can just see the 3rd one as a filler episode in the grand scheme of things.
2:53 I heard the reason why April O'Neil was replaced is because she stood up for the stunt men that were in those suits cuz they didn't get paid good their hours were insane and they weren't treated like a normal actor was so that actress stood up for them and apparently people didn't like that in the industry I think they deserve most of the credit more than the voice worker
This Director authored one of my favorite movies of all time. The guy created a masterpiece.
Always makes my day when you upload! Cowabunga !
This movie came out in Germany around Christmas, when I was 8. My parents worked on the Christmas market of my city in East Germany, which usually lasts from 1st to 4th Advent. The market was the old market place in front of the townhall and very next to it was an old cinema (the ones with only one hall). Because I didn't want to stay all evening long in the little hut that my parents leased to sell stuff on the market, I got every evening my 3 Deutsche Marks and went to see Turtles, sometimes even twice a day for the whole December. I watched it probably 25 times in that month. Good times.
I was 10 years old in 1990. I loved the film and how dark and honestly how edgy it was for a kids film. They didn’t dumb it down like they did in the later movies. I love it and the darkness of it. I still love it to this day. Still the best TMNT film ever made.
Had the VHS tape as a kid and probably watched this movie 100 times. I knew every single line of this movie and probably still do. Absolute classic!!!
It still holds up and has charm that movies nowadays don’t. My son loves this version. He watched the new one and wasn’t into it. There’s no emotion or connection in that new junk at all.
I need to rewatch the movie!
I wish I had their autographs! It would have been Radical!
Totally agree. The answer is in front of everyone’s face. Dark and gritty, which is more like the comics, makes for a much more dramatic, fun, entertaining theme. Studios always try and screw up a director’s vision. We were blessed that he stood for his art, and didn’t back down. Thanks for the vid.
I do like the realism, the lighting, and all the good things there are so much by the way.
That's so crazy that the flying airplanes instruments disrupted the controls for the puppeteering of the turtles oh, that must have been hilarious to see in person when they would start making crazy faces LOL And as always great job on the video absolutely love your Channel
