Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie - Revisiting the 1990 Classic

- If you were a kid during the spring of 1990, there was only one movie that mattered to you, and it was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. At the time, the world was in the grip of Turtle-Mania, with the Saturday morning cartoon and the toys all the rage. Toy stores couldn't keep them in stock, and kids worldwide were obsessed with the kick-ass turtles. There was Leonardo, the leader; Raphael, the streetwise, tough one; Michelangelo, the prankster and Donatello, the brains. Plus, they had Splinter, the mutant rat mentor, while they battled "The Foot Clan" and their leader, the evil Shredder. Many folks don't remember that the Ninja Turtles were based on a pretty grim and dark comic book series, and indeed the film, while taking elements from the comics, was heavily inspired by the cartoon.
Working with the Jim Henson Company, New Line and Golden Harvest (producers of Jackie Chan's Hong Kong output) gave Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles a relatively lean budget, as no one knew whether or not their exploits would convincingly translate to the big screen. They shouldn't have worried, with the movie making a massive $202 million worldwide, making it among the year's most profitable films. However, parents would complain about the level of violence in the movie, meaning all sequels, beginning with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze would be toned down. In this episode of Revisited, written, narrated and edited by E.J. Tangonan, we look at the 1990 classic and examine whether or not it stands the test of time. We also dig into how some of the supporting cast, including Elias Koteas, who played Casey Jones, and a young Sam Rockwell, went onto huge careers in the movie's wake.

Still one of the best page to screen adaptations of all time. Loved it as a kid, still enjoy it immensely as an adult.
It’s still super fun
Same dude ! Those of us who grew up on this movie are like a brotherhood lol. We will all defend it to the death as the masterpiece it is 🤌
Me too
@@brooksysdead so true
@@JoBloOriginals It's what RLM just did and you copied their work.
This film worked because it found the right cross between the darker comics and lighthearted cartoon. The sequels struggled because they were solely like the cartoon
Amen, the "parents" (more like the studios that couldn't get in on the sequels) wanted it neutered cuz of the "violence" and "bad" language. Pussified turtles had little appeal to adults but luckily the kids barely noticed.
Nailed it. Which is why the first one is the best.
@Bone Apple Tea you're absolutely right cause it was this film gremlins batman returns that was messed with due to snow flake parents of that day
I have a Casey Jones cosplay from the film
Definitely. Not to mention the costumes got way worse
The reveal of the Shredder might be my all time favourite villain reveal ever, just because of the excellent buildup.
Definitely
The way Splinter locked up his pike in the nunchucks and flipped him over the building legde....that was amazing.
Shredder reveal was amazing. I was 13 in the theaters and I don’t think I’ve ever heard cheering so loud since Darth Vader.
It was actually very gay. Which means you are. Hehe
After watching this again ,for the first time since I was a kid, I couldn't believe how dark this movie was. I loved it! Bring back these turtles!
Sequels, totally-eliminated, darkness, unfortunately.
I want to see these turtles back on the big screen. If I win the lotto I'm gonna make that movie. Maybe even buy out the rights to the TMNT franchise all together so no one interferes with the story line. No cgi crap either. Straight 1990 style Turtles movie. Bring back some of the original cast too.

The Musical score for the movie is so awesome
Always
Almost as much as "Ninja Rap" from The Secret of the Ooze
Best film adaptation to date. Can’t wait for someone else to realize for the turtles to truly succeed you need to keep the grittier, more violent aspects of the mirage comics.
Exactly and it's sad we never got full blown mirage content with that all red mask triceratons fugitoid and the mousers in live action
Thats why im kinda worried about Mutant Mayhem. Everything I've seen so far is giving off more goofy vibes than I'd like
So true
This is one of those movies I can watch over and over and over and over and over again, and never get bored of
Same, I love this movie
Movie is still amazing, classic
The eruption of a crowd full of kids in a movie theater when that title card popped on the screen still rings in my head 33 years later lol
This film worked because of respect for the source material, and the Jim Henson companies attention to detail in their creations. My wife's favorite movie
I love the first film because it wasn’t so dark as to turn parents completely off of letting their kids see the film but also not goofy and lighthearted enough to make it a full on kids film (looking at you Secret of the Ooze). That way the film works with both kids, teens and also adults.
To this very day still one of my favorite classic films from the 90s that shaped my childhood.
So many memorable lines in this one movie alone.
And for this, you are my brother 👏

Hell yeah!
This is my childhood right here. Like you said this absolutely blew my mind when I was 10 years old . To this day I'm still a huge fan of this movie. Now that we got collectible action figures from the 1990 TMNT. I have them all proudly displayed, including the 1/4 scale which are very impressive.
🐢🐢🐢🐢🐀
I recently watched this on Netflix the other day.... Must say it holds up really well!
Without a doubt, this will forever be in my top 3 favorite movies as a child. I wish the following movies could have been just as serious.
One of my favorite movies of all time, and definitely one of the very best pre-MCU superhero movies.
Hell yeah
What crazy timing, I was just watching clips from this movie right this moment. It's so good. Not only the best representation of TMNT, but I think it's legit a solid movie. Will always be one of my favorites.
You’re absolutely right. It holds up as a solid movie. I think some remember Secret of the Ooze more fondly for “Ninja Rap,” but it’s definitely a worse movie. The OG is where it’s at.
I’m 40 now and still find this movie a great watch. Part 2 also. Grew up with TMNT comics but mainly the toys and cartoon. Awesome review 💯
Still one of my all time favourite movies and I wish Judith Hoag had remained April O'Neill in the sequels. She's also still gorgeous 30 plus years later.
A retrospective about The Guyver (1991) would be fun.
Oh, that would be cool
I'd Buy That For A Dollar!
Actually one of my all time favorite movies. It has stakes but can also be light hearted and is masterfully produced. Also carry the artistic comic side of it well and really respected its roots.
Good to see that its mentioned that the film focuses on the turtles. The biggest problem with the newer films the turtles seem like supporting characters
A Great movie that I enjoyed watching as a kid and have watched with all of my sons.
Can't wait to watch it with my son
This movie is way better than it should have been. Love it still in my late 30’s
I love this movie. Still have my VHS copy from childhood(yes,I VCR to watch it on). I raised all of my kids watching it. Easily in my top 3 movies.
Ditto to all of that myself dude! 😎
Incredible film! Absolutely surpassed every expectation I had for it at the time, and it still holds up today. The balance between Ninja mysticism, gritty New York vibe, and emotional heart was perfect!
I remember my mom taking me to see this in the theater. It was so exciting to see the turtles on the big screen. Plus, knowing that it was filmed in Wilmington, NC was cool.

Saw this movie when it came out - I was all of 9 years old. To this day, when that title card drops, and time stops for just 3-5 more seconds to reveal the turtles for the first time, I still get goose-bumps. 🐀🐢🐢🐢🐢
Still one of my faves. The fact that as a franchise the Turtles are still a top-tier hero genre is impressive standing very close to the big names of Marvel & DC
This and the 2003 animated series are the best TMNT adaptations
I didn't like that shredder was a utrom in 2003 series but other than that it was cool.
And Shredder's Revenge game
Uh, the 1980s cartoon? Hello?
I knew this movie was awesome when I saw it in theaters, but I didn’t realize that just how awesome it was until I saw it again as an adult. It has what modern TMNT films lack which is heart and soul.
This is the first movie I ever saw at the cinema. Judith Hoag was my first adult celebrity crush.
💙💜❤️🧡
It was one of my first too. I saw and had to have anything Turtles-related as a kid. I pretty much had every toy put out from ‘88-‘94 too. I was hoping my mom still had them all packed away in her attic but apparently they cleared everything out a few years ago. Some of that was probably worth some money now too. 😥
@@willrunriot Too many of us have gone through the same thing bro. For me it was my comic collection. Mom's need to stop tossing our childhood memories away. Let's make a organization ... Mothers Against Disposing Toys, we can call it MADT 😂 only if I knew, I would have dragged all my comics with me through out the years from one place to the next, maybe I'd still have my comics. Hell ya, she was mine too!
This was THE franchise to follow when I was in elementary school. I was a huge fan of the cartoon and movie, which came out when I was in second grade. I even had a Ninja Turtles lunch box! 😂

This movie is a PERFECT TMNT movie. It’s the perfect balance of darkness and light, violence and comedy, the comics and cartoon, for kids and adults.
They absolutely knocked it our of the park and is still the standard today.

Mo-cap wasn't a bad idea, and the tech has come a long way, but the art direction and design of the turtles in the Bay flicks were horrendous.

I remember this movie came out the same exact time as 'House Party' I went with my cousin to see TMNT and my older sisters and cousins saw 'House Party'. The movies was at a peak in that era. This is all right before CGI.
6:28 One of the greatest and most underrated modern actors - Sam Rockwell. Newer noticed him in TMNT before.
I’m 40 years old and I still get excited every time I watch this movie like if I was eight when it first came out
6:53 bro I've been saying this for years so nice to hear the sentiment shared 😀
This movie is 30 years old and still looks better than alot of the stuff being put out today. There has yet to be another turtles movie that looks as good, thats for sure. It is definitely a contender for "best comicbook movie".
The costumes of the 1st movie were the best and still look amazing to this day!
They need to clean up this transfer and give us a proper 4KBluray release.
Still one of my favorite movies as a 39 year old dude.
Will forever remain in my top 10 favorite films. Was way better than it had any right to be. Still waiting for a special edition release.
Would love to see a 4K version of this movie. The lighting and color grading for this film were awesome. Whenever I argue for how great 35mm film was. I use this movie and Batman 1989 as examples.
TMNT 90 is still the best movie. My mom took me when I was 9 with a few of my friends to see it in theaters. I wish they had left the longer end fight scene in against Shredder and also where he takes down 4 foot soldiers sitting down.
As watching this as a7 year old. It didn't feel like a kids movie. Loved it
I like how you put the "Micheal Bay Turtles Movies" in the same grouping with the horrendous "Turtles Music Tour" with "We Don't Talk About Those"
The final showdown is the best part of this movie between The Shredder and all the turtles, plus “the rat” lol
Nothing tops being nine years old and wacthing Rapheal shout "Damn"
Watched this movie so much as a kid, I know every word to this movie like a damn song lol. Favorite and the best TMNT Movie they ever made.
I just watched this again a year ago and I still love it! Thus one really holds up well
❤. This movie, these characters has brought me so much happiness since I first saw them until this very day, and will NEVER leave my heart. From the first note of music to the last always been in my mind. Thank you for doing this video. Long live, love TURTLE POWER! .
One of the best comic-book films of all time!
I was nine years old when this movie came out. I remember having a trapper keeper with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles all over it. I remember the cartoon and all the action figures. I remember the Nintendo game. I even remember Pizza Hut having specials like McDonald’s has the happy meal, and we got a bag full of teenage mutant ninja turtle memorabilia. It was a great period in history.
Definitely one of the best times to be alive
A retrospective video on Guyver 2 Dark Hero would be awesome
I still love this film and watch it every year.
I grew up on the 2003 turtles not knowing there was a live action movie. When I saw the DVD in the bargain bin at a Wal-Mart when I was 6, I couldn't believe it! My older brother proceeded to tell me that there were three movies in total and began to dig through the pile to see if they had the other two. When my brother found the two sequels, I immediately began begging my mom to buy us the three movies and she reluctantly agreed. That night I had one of the best experiences I have ever had watching a film. The movie was everything I could have ever wanted as a Raphael fan and as a fan of the more serious - action based version of the turtles. I liked the sequels, since they reminded me of the 80s cartoon I'd watch on VHS, the second and third movie didn't hold a candle to the first film. I really don't think anything will ever top the original for me. Hoping they get the sense to make a legacy sequel to the first film and adapt the Last Ronin with practical costumes one day 🐢 🐢 🐢 🐢
The "empty NFL coach answer" had me howling!
This movie still hits! It got even better for me when I read the original Mirage comics.
I wished they went full mirage and had them wear the all red mask and used villains from the mirage comics in the sequels
This movie was so vast that the 7-year old me, living in a small village with about 2500 mortal beings, was all amazed and just wow'd when this movie came out. The sheer brilliant mixture of entertainment and great characters struck the young me so much in the most positive way possible, with the added hype I got from the cartoon series back then. I'll gladly admit that I was completely sold with this movie. So much that I made my own bo staff (Don was my favorite) and lined up several foot clan-shaped polystyrene's and smashed them to bits with my own...."ninja moves". Yep, that much I loved this movie and its cartoon series, and revisiting the movie like you did with this, brought a lot of jollygood memories back, for sure. Thank you for that.
Absolutely my favorite movie from Childhood and possibly top 5 favorite movies of all time. That's right dude and dudettes major league butt kicking is back in town!
I think it's one of the BEST comic adaptions that few talk about.
Dude if the Shredder threw a Barbeque with some beer I'd join in a heartbeat! Thanks for this awesome video bro! Love it! ❤
That game soundtrack I could listen to for hours.
This and Ghostbusters were my first two movies I remember getting for Christmas
My favourite super hero movie, with sam ramey’s spidey a close second.
I just read the last ronin recently. And oh man….
Its a must read, even if you dont do books.
My five year old recently has gotten into tmnt bc he found a bunch of my old toys and it’s great. I watched this movie for the first time since I was a kid with him and it’s great! I love how they don’t kiddy things bc kids want a real movie about tmnt and not some saccharin garbage. They really show the foot to be bad; I audibly gasped when they slapped April O’Neil in the subway station bc I totally had forgot about it!
Also I still think their foot lair with all the video arcades and the skateboard area is still awesome af…also kids smoking and maybe even drinking too. So awesome
The movie was great. When I was a kid I liked the 2nd one more but looking back this was so much better and so much more grounded in reality...well as much as possible.
This movie is a masterpiece.
Facts
As someone who went to the theater to see this film as a young boy, when it first released back in 1990, I've always believed it was because of THIS FILM and it's extraordinary success, that we're still talking about the Turtles to this day. When you compare TMNT to Thundercats, Masters of the Universe, Bionic Six, and other notable kids properties from the 1980s that have been in hibernation, the Turtles have been consistently popular and iconic for nearly 40 years. It's decades long, reinvention of itself as a property is specifically due to the this 1990 film being so damn good.
Great video man. This is one of my favorite movies ever so thx you for all the info and footage 🍾
This movie still holds up SO well. You have no idea
Imagine if we got baxter stockman mousers fugitoid triceratons the shredder clones and foot elite in the 1990 sequels instead of super shredder tokka rhazar and the shogun antagonist
💯
The deleted fight scene with shredder's introduction was rightfully done. We didn't need to see that kind of played out trope where he's so badass no one can touch him. That was done at the end of the film.
The Score,The dark undertone themes, gritty new york, spectacular costume designs what else did I leave out
This movie is a freaking classic that can never be topped nor in any fashion, duplicated. As much as I kind of enjoyed the second movie, this one should have been a one-and-done at least in my point of view...
I met Judith Hoag, April, at Comic con. She was awesome to meet.
Until a producer/director decides to return to the darker tone like this, there will NEVER be another Turtle movie that matches the excellence of the first. I said what I said. Looking at you Seth Rogen.
I still have the VHS of the live music tour. I still love watching it at 37 years old.
Raph is such a badass in this movie.
"I mean c'mon, how do you guys expect to beat me?"
Ninja kick the damn rabbit!
I loved how Don & Mike go odds and evens to see who will fight shredder first. This is a timeless real NYC comic book film brought to life.
I revisted comic issues 1-9 thanks to a collection I was given for Christmas and off the back of that sat down to watch the 1990 films with my 9 year old. We both loved it and I think it is still by FAR the best screen adapation, maintaining that grittier NYC tone. Someone needs to make something true to Eastman and Liard's original vision now. Practical effects and a dark story.
I'm 100% ok with mo-cap, they just need to design of the turtles to not look like trash.
The original films started going downhill, because, the original cartoon, was, nearing its end, and, the last two films, were, subsequently, rushed into production.
