- Rosemary Clooney sings the Gershwin classic "Love is Here to Stay", live in concert on the lawn of the White House. Broadcast on PBS in the summer of 1993. T. S. Monk provides the introduction.
I LOVE ROSE MARY CLOONEY. THIS SET SHE IS OLD BUT THE SPARK IS STILL THERE. GOD BLESS.
Class act for forever!!!
She takes the listener on a journey through the song. Marvelous!
What a lovely introduction.
She respects composer and songwriter. never show off technique.
I like her style very much.
Thanks for posting this.
That is an important distinction that sets Rosemary Clooney apart as an icon. Many other singers use a song to show off vocally. I find their unnecessary frills annoying.
Rosemary was such a class act. Very down to earth. I saw her live at the Herbst Theater in SF and she spilled some water on the piano, mopped it up, and cracked "A woman's work is never done."
Auntie Rosie makes her nephew proud!! A great presence on the stage, unusual voice and very jazzy...
Oh yes, Rosemary, our love for you is certainly here to stay...
The band is as tasteful as it gets. They’re master accompanists especially the pianist John Otto. And Rosemary is so cool. After she introduced the band and Otto solos on 8 bars of the chorus, Rosemary asks John, “Now me”?
Rosie was such a class act. I could listen to her for hours on end.
So true man.
Love this song.
How can anyone not love her?!?!?!!!
Great rendition by a great performer!
Rosie was such a great talent.
Gracious lady with a great gift.
Nice rendition. Kareem Abdul Jabbar is briefly seen in the audience, giving Rosie a smile and the thumbs-up sing at the beginning. Nice.
Her charm is still there forever!
I wish I had the opportunity to see that great performer live on stage. ❤😢
So good to hear the introductory verse included!
Lovely to hear the verse.
FLAME QUEEN
“Love Is Here to Stay” was the last musical composition George
Gershwin completed before his death on July 11, 1937. Ira Gershwin wrote
the words after George's death as a tribute to his brother’s passing.
Although George had not initially written a verse for the song, he did
have an idea for it that both Ira and pianist Oscar Levant had heard prior to his death.[1] Later, when a verse was needed, Ira and Levant recalled what they knew George had had in mind, and composer Vernon Duke reconstructed the music for the verse at the beginning of the song.
Originally titled "It's Here to Stay" and then "Our Love Is Here to
Stay", the song was finally published as "Love Is Here to Stay". Ira
Gershwin said that he wanted to change the song's name back to "Our Love
Is Here to Stay" for years, but felt that it wouldn't be right since
the song had already become a standard.
Joe Carbery that explains the verse intro - I never understood who it was that wrote it, but not GG for the music, I could have told you that. Not that I’ve minded, all this time, but I didn’t know the answer. Levant. Another Oscar for ya! Thanks
Thank you for this precious information!!! It's hard finding singers who sing the verse! I love verses!!!! This is one of my favorite standards and from now on I'll sing it with the verse and the story behind it.
Rosemary Clooney lived next to Ira Gershwin, until his death.
It's funny. When she sings, it like your best friend talking to you at the kitchen table.
@@proserepair Our longtime friend, really like an aunt to me, in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, came from a singing family. Sisters, husbands, etc... Italian. I was a friend of her nephew in the '70s when we were 20 or so. They sang all the standards, we learned and sang along too. I always liked the aunt because she sang like Rosemary, and vice versa. Thanks for posting.
This is a great Jazz vocalist! She is singing a great American pop song. (My very favorite.) The lyrics are both dated and timeless. The lyrics, by Ira Gershwin, are in the American vernacular of the late 1930s. The music composed by Ira's younger brother, George Gershwin. Written in 1937, it is the last song these two brothers collaborated before George passed from this life. It is one of the greatest declarations of Love of all time.
Great stuff!
not a jazz fan but I could listen to Rosie sing it all day
love her and this ! thanks
❤️🎤🎹🎶
Just an aside: Rosemary Clooney lived next door to Ira Gershwin.
Art Edwards really? the Gershwins were genius and Rose-Mary was a Friend of Dean Martin...she sang at his funeral “return to me”
