  • Composer and lyricist, George and brother Ira Gershwin really made this a miraculous work of art! Here, sung by wonderful Kenny Baker, is this amazing song! Lovely Andrea Leeds, and lecherous Adolphe Menjou, though fine performers, are merely window dressing for one of the best singers, and songs by the Gershwins!

    Possibly my favorite Gershwin song, and the last one he wrote. Dead at 38. My mother, who was 16 at the time, cried when she heard the news.

    YET ANOTHER SONG which typically has been performed and sung at dreadful, GLACIAL tempos since the '50s. Here, in 1937, it's done at a decent clip, the 4/4 rhythm is both implied and explicit. It's performed charmingly, moves gracefully, the meaning of the song rings clear, and NOTHING drags. How refreshing! I wish people in the music business would watch and learn.

    • @esmeephillips5888
      @esmeephillips5888 3 роки тому +1

      It's the crossover problem. The more Gershwin was embraced by 'serious' musicians, the slower the tempi became. Listen to his own recording of 'Rhapsody in Blue' versus some funereal performances in concert halls. These interpreters confuse speed with frivolity.

    • @MrSuperbatone
      @MrSuperbatone 3 роки тому

      @@esmeephillips5888 Thanks for responding! Yeah, it's a crossover problem, also an AGING problem. Conductors slow down as they age; then their young disciples ape their slow tempos, which get even slower as THEY age! If they - or any performer - took the trouble to listen to George Gershwin himself playing piano (there are many - though NOT ENOUGH! - records), they quickly would hear that his no-nonsense tempos were brisk, full of life, smile-inducing-contagious and technically lovely. No slimy trail! You should hear the four sides he made with Fred & Adele Astaire in '26! Gershwin's playing ALWAYS gives me a terrific lift. Musicians who adhere to "funereal" tempos for Gerswhin should summarily be plunked head-first in a tall bucket of bat guano.

    • @p1anosteve
      @p1anosteve 3 роки тому

      Well said. But I think it's just interpretation by jazz musicians that has led to slower tempos and the perception that this must be a "love song" and of course he did not seem to appreciate people messing around with his songs. There is nothing like hearing it as originally intended. If only Gershwin had lived long enough for us to hear him play it!

    • @MrSuperbatone
      @MrSuperbatone 3 роки тому

      @@p1anosteve Well, in the absence of George (he had already died by the time this was filmed), this performance will have to do, which it does ADMIRABLY. Of course, a "Love Song" can be done any way the performer sees fit. But I, being a live human being, prefer music with a PULSE. Gershwin himself was highly adaptable. He had no ego about his music. In preparing a Broadway show, he always was willing to cut something out, or re-compose. But he knew what went into an effective piece, and above all, it was RHYTHM. Fortunately, most people and producers at the time agreed with George on that.

Anyway, from the same film here’s another favorite; wish it had more visitors! I’m always in a quandry as how to “title” things! Hope you like:

    Adolphe Menjou is one of my favorite character actors from the Golden Age, but it is a pity that he talks over the last work of America's greatest composer. C'est la vie.

      esmee - not his fault - it's hard to believe but back then - the producers/writers were worried that audiences will lose interest - or lose track of the plot - so there were a lot of intrusive dialog like this - but in due course hollywood learned that uninterrupted musical numbers were preferred - there could be reaction shots - but no dialog unless absolutely necessary

      Vernon Duke "filled in" most of the melody, as Gershwin left it unfinished at his death in July 1937.

      Barry I. Grauman Mr. Grauman, I don't know if this is true or not, but I read somewhere that Duke wanted (and insisted) that he receive at least co-credit for composing "Love Is Here to Stay". At which point Oscar Levant, close friend of George's and possibly the finest performer of Gershwin's music, did the "filling-in" by notating what George had played for him. Z.K.

    @shanghaibenny2 Scary to say, but I remember it when it was "pitching woo!" Also, I always thought Adolphe was rather like "Spring Byington" in drag! They both were probably quite young, possibly in their early '40s, but they had that perpetual look of people around 58! Guess that's what we call "character actors!" As always, happy to hear from you!

      In this scene Andrea Leeds is with lecherous Adolph Menjou. Andrea is falling in love with Kenny Baker who's on a radio talent show; still have those today, but on TV. In the nicest way Andrea tries to shut down Adolph and his cheesy passes; he just had hired her as a talent scout! After hearing the brilliant Kenny he says he'll hire him! This film would be the last collaboration of the Brothers Gershwin, George and Ira. I think George died just before the film was completed. One enormous loss for us all! Here's another link showing when Kenny and Andrea 1st meet! Enjoy!

      I enjoy them both. Both tenors but with different timbre. Baker is a bit richer toned but Dennis was young when he took his place. In later year Dennis developed a richer voice. No doubt Jack Benny was lucky to have both. But Kenny felt he was becoming typecast as a goofy guy and thought leaving the show would open more doors for him. Sadly it did not.
