Hey Guys, If you have any questions, please let me know, I am trying to get a lot of questions for a future questions and answers video! Thanks, and ENJOY
You sir are the best, I just saw this and you showed me skills (between the lines), by coming straight on with your message. No pretense, just honesty and that is rare in bladesmiths.
Hey! I've got that exact same Covel SG! Also, thank you so much for all the knowledge! I've not had super great results with etching damascus in the past, so I've been a little scared to make/use it. I'm definitely going to jump into it more now that I've seen your process. So thanks again!
Thanks to you, your bro and dad for these vids...I just joined the ABS and your vids are the most informative and best made on UA-cam. Thank you very much.
I bought a couple blanks and they look beautiful but they are not very smooth running my finger over them. What should I do? If I wetsand the crap out of them will they need the whole etch process started over?
Sweet! Did you have to neutralize the cold blue too? I tend to have problems when I use cold blue when it comes to neutralizing and washing off the excess as it causes the blade to smell pretty bad as well as my hands anytime I handle it, but I'm still using a blueing paste/gel by Birchwood Casey which may be different than Brownells' oxpho blue. Also, I know you use hot blueing salts for mild steel frames and fittings etc., but do you ever use it to provide the contrast on your the Damascus? I guess I'm mostly wondering what would make you choose one over the other when using either hot blueing or cold blueing, or even instant coffee. Thanks for sharing!
Make sure to follow up with a video of the knife put together. It looks great. Also, question for your next question and answer video - How many knifes do you make a year and what types? All customs or some made to your liking?
Kyle, I have a question, I've got damascus blade, overall the blade is darkish and pattina is fairly visible but I noticed two faded spots, I wanted to etch those spots to make them darken. I used fairly mild ferric chloride solution and put drops onto faded spots just for a minute but instead of darkening, those spots faded out even more... what am I doing wrong, any advice will be greatly appreciated! thanks!
Beautiful. Curious why the buffing wheels are left out in the open. As you know shop dust settles on them. Toss each one into a Tupperware or similar container with the compound for that wheel. It kills me to see the compound sitting out as it picks up crap too.
Good eye James. We cover or put away our finishing .1 micron wheels and compound. You right it needs care. We are looking at building a clean room just for buffing. Good to have you here hanging out with us all my friend Dad
Coffee etch can be amazing! I just recently did coffee etching with a chef knife I did. The video where my dad is shaping a handle for the chef knife he made was coffee etched.... ua-cam.com/video/wV-G9vJ1skE/v-deo.html
Kyle, I have a question. I recently etched a 1095 Blade and for some reason it got pitting. I was able sand them out but it took for ever. My mix is a 1:1 mix of ferric chloride and white vinegar. This is the first time I have had this happen to me. Should I reduce the potency of the acid? Thanks, Martin
Aubrey, it's not done yet. We're getting ready to do the gold inlay. It will be professionally photographed by Caleb Royer Photography. Thanks for watching.
KyleRoyerKnives thanks for the reply! Very much looking forward to seeing the final product. I recently went back and redesigned the guard for my first Bowie as a result of your guard fitting videos. Supremely helpful thank you again for the details and entertainment

It’s there any book with images that you recommend for forging Damascus blades???🙏

Also a tip for anyone who doesn't know a good source of ammonia, windex is a great house hold item that you can use to neutralize the acid

You’re welcome R W. Good luck with your journey to master 👍🏻🔥. Dad just joined this year. Maybe see you at Blade. Keep Forging On my friend.
Dad
I'm so happy that I finally found you guys.
I saw you in other videos but not yours. I'm glad I subscribe!
Awesome job Josh, the quality of the video speaks to your talent. Kyle, as always, an inspiration! I'm loving the content guys, keep it up!
Thanks so much Sam! That really inspires us to do better and more videos! Thanks for the comment!
A close up shot at the end would have been nice but great work and usefull informstions... thanks a lot!
Thanks for the feedback ~Team Royer
Your videos are very good, I'm learning a lot! Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
I am so glad they are helpful to yo! Thank you for watching! Happy new year! :)
Awesomely beautiful blade!!

Seriously, I watched both videos and you don’t even show the final result. WTF man, all that work and no money shot, disappointing.

I'll be sure to make a cool little video chowing off the Dagger! Great question! I will love to us it in our next Q&A
What about not mixing the ferric chloride with water and just putting the Damascus in it? Does it have to be mixed with water?

I know this is an older video but do u still use this technique or do you mainly do coffee darkening now?
It’s evolving. Still searching for the perfect sequence. Cheers

Have you ever tried a coffee etch? It's probably because I don't have easy access to gun blueing but I absolutely love it

do you mix up fresh acid each time you etch a knife? Great video, saw you at Blade 2015.
Hey Jon
Great question. No we will use that acid as long as it keeps etching good. Then start with a fresh batch
Dad
@@KyleRoyerKnives I know MS makers that just keep adding acid, full strength to their pots, as it takes less acid. I have done both..

He states he likes a 4:1 (4 water, 1 acid)
If you're putting a hamon line on your blade...do you need acid to bring out the pattern?
Great question my friend. No just by sanding it the hamon will be revealed. Unless it’s sanded too much, then it disappears. Glad you’re here
Dad
@@KyleRoyerKnives awesome! Thank you very much! Y'all have a blessed day 🙂
You are the master...
Were can I find the cold blueing
I have to watch your vids every night now, what have you done to me?
Hopefully we have expanded your love for functional art my friend
Cheers from the Ozarks
Dad
I didn’t see any pictures of this dagger on Instagram, did you guys do professional pictures?
Aubrey, it's not done yet. We're getting ready to do the gold inlay. It will be professionally photographed by Caleb Royer Photography. Thanks for watching.

I was hoping you would soak it in some instant coffee too.
I will make a video on coffee etching on of these days. I just recently coffee etched a chef knife. Thanks for the comment! :)
Hai siater ana 😁
Like everyone else is saying what the fuck no close up to see the final results?
