Hey Daniel, Thank you for this. This was really humbling to listen to, I'm touched the books have meant so much to you (so far, I could still shoot myself in the foot here in the final act, of course), and grateful for the coverage. For what it's worth, your videos have done no shortage of good for the series, and for me.
Dude! It's so good! Thank you for creating it. I only came across the series via this channel this year and now I'm 68% through Disquiet Gods. You have done an amazing job
This is honestly the best review you've done that I have seen. Thanks for both being so honest and real while doing an amazing job at selling this series. I am hoping to start this series soon!
Facts. This right here! I really connected with the personal growth aspect and your vulnerability. ❤️ Well done🤘 Can't wait to pick this up, just requested from my library. Cheers!
I lost my job recently, it was a career I had been building for the last 8 years or so. I'm in the throes of starting over and "reinventing" myself. I have found a strange solace in the Sun Eater saga. Even though it is fiction, I feel less alone and encouraged to keep pressing forward. Thank you Daniel for being so open with this video. And Thank you Ruocchio for this story that has given us so much more than we ever thought a book could.
While I respect that the algorithm and therefore the money likes when you do short upbeat snippets, this is the type of review I really enjoy, personally. Thank you, Daniel.
I got into Sun Eater because of you and it is now one of my favorite series! I am truly in love with the series and I couldn’t thank you more for bringing this book into my life!
@@manavsingh6145 Yeah, I'm at the end of the second book, and for me this has been a SLOG, this series takes a really long time to say nothing (I feel very little actually happens for such thick books), and I really don't jive with the repeating descriptions( Repeating a description you just gave in a flowery or more often pretensious manner). I've started and stopped this series three times now, and only because Daniel speaks so highly of it, but if a book from a series I enjoy drops, a few of them have april releases, I'll probably be dropping it a fourth time. Does this series gets better in the third installment or if I was going to like it I would've already??

“Oh! That’s my taste done well!” is the most remarkably accurate statement about my relationship with this series. It’s the perfect blend of beautiful prose, character work, and batshit insane action. It was really enjoyable to watch this, having read up to the first 30 pages of Disquiet Gods, knowing everything you reference. Also, this personal format was truly meaningful and resonated with me a great deal.
This is the my favourite video of yours I've seen. This more quiet attitude to stories that do take up space in your mind and impact you, this honest and patient structure to the video, this equal display of emotion and commentary just strikes me as a crucial and commendable progression and elevation in your content. Thank you Daniel.
10/10 I love how you've styled this review. Not every book likely needs this treatment but the raw, emotional, and personal experience for how you've connected with this series really shows. I'm really excited for the audiobook release for Disquiet Gods, and see where Hadrian's journey ends.
DG sitting around his house in nice little sweaters with keyboards and cats and just hanging while talking about the books is nice. It fits with with the more laid back and natural side of DG, he got that wild side too, but this gives off comfortable vibes and is a self aware change up that I dig.
Fantastic analysis. Christopher Ruocchio is my favorite living author, and I've already spent a fortune collecting hardcover Sun Eater books, something I've never had the urge to do for anyone else. Thank you for helping to shine a spotlight on this criminally under known masterpiece

So great to see this. These books have set the bar so high for me that almost everything else falls short lately. I’ve shed tears many times in these books and they affected me deeply.
this review is one of my favorite on the entire channel, the emotion, the raw and real love of these stories, I can feel it and now i am for sure gonna read sun eater!!

Just finished howling dark and all the praise in this video is deserved sun eater is awesome. The only downside is it will ruin modern mainstream sci-fi like Star Wars by showing you how shallow it has become in comparison.
The first Sun Eater book is on my shelf on your recommendation. The Will of the Many is my favorite book of 2023 because your review inspired me to read it. Fear not, Daniel. Thanks for being so personal with this review. Important to talk about. I definitely think books can have a greater impact when they are read at the right time emotionally.
Yo, I've been writing novels in your comments section for many years now, as you no doubt know, so I've seen your progression over time. We have been on a similar - if not identical - journey of recovering from trauma. I'm glad you are open about yours. Suneater has not done as much for me as it has for you because I'm clear-eyed about my flaws, and one of the biggest has to do with not repressing emotions learning how to say no to narcissists who want me to do things I'm uncomfortable with, but have done due to a history of traumatic experiences. Hadrian Marlowe - at least at the point I've read - reflects so many of the character traits of narcissists I've had to cut out of my life so being in his headspace has been thoroughly exhausting. I don't particularly enjoy being exhausted by main characters. however, there is enough interesting stuff going on that I'm still reading. I'm enjoying Demon in White, so far, much more than the previous books. With that said, I have been moved by your enthusiasm for the series, because I've seen the dip in your enthusiasm over time and I do get the nostalgia for a time when you just enjoyed reading books and wanted to talk about it and even though I have a barometer for where our tastes intersect and diverge, I trust you as a critic so I've given it a go and I'll probably get to Disquiet Gods later this year. I'm glad to see you are doing better, and enjoying life again. It feels nice to feel, after a long period of numbness. Be well. P.S. I'm really looking forward to a potential Book of the New Sun review, although it is unlikely to have the same impact on you as Suneater does for a LOT of reasons.
I have been reading this series since 2018 and you hit the nail on the head with how this series had made me feel, I remember joining you discord maybe late 2018 early 2019 and mentioning/posting the first and second book. I’m happy to see that you were able to get around to reading them, you will not be disappointed with Disquiet Gods, Hadrian has more horrors to endure.
Thanks for sharing this with us. If you were wondering if this different approach worked, 10/10 I loved it. You really made it obvious that this is special.
Thank you for guiding me to this incredible series and author. They are destined to become modern classics and I believe you have had a real impact in raising awareness of it. Something to be proud of.
stuck on ashes of man but excited for the next arc of the saga. thank you for the stellar reviews + reccs. glad you're doing better since last year :) sometimes I wish I didn't listen to the audiobook so I could really sit with the concepts and ideas concretely, in writing like hieroglyphs etched onto limestone. especially for sun eater I had to pause a bit every so often, and the silence and not silence of the world we reside in would flood the world Ruocchio imagined, existing and not existing within the confines of imagination built through lived and unlived experience. drowning, it made me appreciate every breath.
2 months later. I stopped at min 3 when this video first came out and immediately started on the series. Thank you very very very much for that. I enjoyed this series beyond words. Thank you helping me find a new addition to my favorites series ever.
I personally crave for more reviews like this-raw and personal. I find the youtube performance grating and it irks me that youtube has all gone down the mr. Beast, overacted and overhyped personality route. I like humans, not performances. This video was one of the most enjoyable you’ve done in a long while. I love suneater and can’t wait to go on with the series. I’m glad you are back to this style of review, thank you for sharing your personal experience with the series.
Dude, you brought First Law into my life years ago and it changed my life and turned me into a book reader, and now sun eater has been the first series since that has matched that feeling of having my interests met, EOS was incredible to read I ADORE how it feels like the book has been written by Hadrian it feels so immersive and I love how Hadrian voices things, his melodrama is intoxicating ❤ endlessly fascinated by his journey just getting to the last quarter of Howling Dark
Thank you for the hard work and overcoming the struggle to keep the channel going . Mad 😂😂😂 and grateful You got me into Malazan the struggle totally worth it
Thanks for this Daniel I feel like I'm also in a big turning point in my life and seeing your videos continues to keep me going. I love reading and your videos and recommendations keep me on my toes. Great stuff Goblin!
Hadrian having his heart ripped out in book one by what narrator-Hadrian says is one of the most important people in his life made me die a little inside. im excited to read book two now because of your recommendation of this series
Thanks for brining my attention to this series. I am currently reading "Demon in White", by now I am hooked. The first 2 books were enjoyable (like a backstory for a DnD character), after that I could not stop to read. And I love the worldbuilding, ist amazing. I hope you are doing all right, I wish you all the best and I hope you'll keep getting better.
Wow Daniel! This was a 10/10. I want to give you a hug and a huge high five. These books are blowing my mind. I love how you can zoom out and see what's going on in a character and narrative. You're great at what you do and thanks for still doing it.
Bravo!! I actually have had a very similar personal experience with Sun Eater, and I can so identify with what you said about the thrill of finding that series and author who seem to get you specifically as a person and reader. Always forward, always down!
Thank you for recommending this book. I just made it to book 5 and it's probably my favorite story so far. But I'm also new to reading with only one years time and being dyslexic I hope to fine more stories that are as good as this one.
i love that you identified deconstruction and reconstruction as the core process that you both related to and went through. as someone who's also had to confront both personal wrongs and privilege and rebuild my life after hurting and alienating people i love, I've come to realize that process is core to accountability and improvement at every level. it's praxis: you have to contextualize your behavior, reflect on it, learn new ideas, try them, rinse and repeat. and grene fiction has always been a really useful tool for people to explore these concepts and try on new perspectives that can help us think and act in more humane and pragmatic ways. all this to say that I'm so glad that you're doing well and doing the work, that you've found your way into your own version of this process and are now finding a way to share it with others. i know you're not a non fiction guy, but i think you would get a lot out of pedagogy of the oppressed. despite the name, it's super straightforward and it changed my life on a society-minded level the way art that hit me like suneater hit you changed my life on the personal level. keep it up. you're doing good stuff. 🌞
I love these books SO much. I have read them twice now and only read them after your review of EoS. I could drown in the lore. These have made a huge impact on me to the WoT level, and I have not felt that way in 20+ years.
Thank you so much for your vulnerability with this. The power of literature to resonate within us and to cement the lessons that we're going through in life is so powerful. So is your story and this resonated with me on such a deep level. Thank you for sharing this and for doing what you do
Sun Eater is something special. There’s a reason the grass roots campaign has paid off for it (which is a lot more rare than you would think, most everything that makes it to the surface is astroturf by some financial backing) because it’s the real deal. People are taking about it because it’s fantastic.
I read this series after your first empire of silence video and now howling dark and demon in white are some of my favourite books ever. This story brought me so much joy and pain all thanks to you Daniel! I knew I could count on you😂❤
As a Dresden Files fan, you're making it sound like this series will properly tickle my "Author tortures the main character because he cannot torture his readers" sense. Yay.
Thank you for a great, daring tale about yourself and storytelling. I find the books enthralling also, with some patches of not so exellent writing and weird tableaux' from other books. But then again I loved the fact that there is a character called Aramini, which Wolfe fans would know well, meta-wink!
Absolutely agree about the impact finding the right story at the right time can do for You. Had known about Sun Eater for a while but didn't start reading it until last month.
This is my favourite video you have ever done. The change in environment, format , and your delivery really fit .
This is your best video. Highly appreciated it.
Great review! Thought provoking and I will hopefully find my way back here whenever I have gotten to Sun Eater!
Thanks for sharing this with us. If you were wondering if this different approach worked, 10/10 I loved it. You really made it obvious that this is special.
i goota say this is one of the best goblin vidoes ive seen in a while i can feel the how well thought out it was
Thank you sir for letting us in and thank you for the appreciation you are showing this series.
Thank you for guiding me to this incredible series and author. They are destined to become modern classics and I believe you have had a real impact in raising awareness of it. Something to be proud of.
Also the knife microphone was particularly stressful in this video
stuck on ashes of man but excited for the next arc of the saga. thank you for the stellar reviews + reccs. glad you're doing better since last year :)
sometimes I wish I didn't listen to the audiobook so I could really sit with the concepts and ideas concretely, in writing like hieroglyphs etched onto limestone. especially for sun eater I had to pause a bit every so often, and the silence and not silence of the world we reside in would flood the world Ruocchio imagined, existing and not existing within the confines of imagination built through lived and unlived experience. drowning, it made me appreciate every breath.
Excellent review for an excellent series. Well done, Daniel!
I really enjoyed this format and approach to the series review.
I just finished "Empire of Silence" mostly because of this video, and it was incredible!! Such a great rec for this Dune and Name of the Wind fan.
You do a great job with your thoughts here. Nice to see you enjoy a series and bring it to people. I’m biased but I like to see it.
That intro you did about finding art at the right moment - that was beautifully put. Synchronicity. I know exactly what that feels like
Love the deconstruction of Sun Eater. I have loved this series since Eos was first released. Glad it is getting the attention it deserves. Well done.
Daniel, man! This review is something! I’ve enjoyed every second of it. So personal, so special! Thanks for it, keep going and wow, that was a thing!
Thank you for recommending this book. I just made it to book 5 and it's probably my favorite story so far. But I'm also new to reading with only one years time and being dyslexic I hope to fine more stories that are as good as this one.
I wish I didn't have to wait until the audiobook 😭 Sun Eater is so good. So glad I picked it up after your first review. I blasted through it
Wow. Best review of yours. You inspire me. Thank you, Daniel.
i love that you identified deconstruction and reconstruction as the core process that you both related to and went through. as someone who's also had to confront both personal wrongs and privilege and rebuild my life after hurting and alienating people i love, I've come to realize that process is core to accountability and improvement at every level. it's praxis: you have to contextualize your behavior, reflect on it, learn new ideas, try them, rinse and repeat. and grene fiction has always been a really useful tool for people to explore these concepts and try on new perspectives that can help us think and act in more humane and pragmatic ways.
all this to say that I'm so glad that you're doing well and doing the work, that you've found your way into your own version of this process and are now finding a way to share it with others.
i know you're not a non fiction guy, but i think you would get a lot out of pedagogy of the oppressed. despite the name, it's super straightforward and it changed my life on a society-minded level the way art that hit me like suneater hit you changed my life on the personal level.
keep it up. you're doing good stuff. 🌞
The return of the knife / mic combo, w00p w00p lol
That smear on the wall made me think I had a scratch on my screen for 10 good minutes.
Sorry! Haha slipped when putting that shelf up.
same. Its unwatchable. Please rerecord the whole video. Preferably without the smear.
OMG! Same! I thought I was the only one. Lol.
I love these books SO much. I have read them twice now and only read them after your review of EoS. I could drown in the lore. These have made a huge impact on me to the WoT level, and I have not felt that way in 20+ years.
Didn't hesitate to start reading this series after about 2 minutes of you talking about it and I am so glad I blindly trusted you. Such a good series.
In my opinion, this is the perfect vibe for a video essay/analysis. If not for most videos, at least keep this style for series analysis videos.
I love the serious tone and how this book hit you right in the right place in your life.
Thank you so much for your vulnerability with this. The power of literature to resonate within us and to cement the lessons that we're going through in life is so powerful. So is your story and this resonated with me on such a deep level. Thank you for sharing this and for doing what you do
Why on earth are these books out of print on most major book sites? That's insane! This series deserves to be in print forever!!
I knew I could count on you😂❤
Possibly one of your best videos yet
As a Dresden Files fan, you're making it sound like this series will properly tickle my "Author tortures the main character because he cannot torture his readers" sense.
Yay.
😂😂
Thank you for a great, daring tale about yourself and storytelling. I find the books enthralling also, with some patches of not so exellent writing and weird tableaux' from other books. But then again I loved the fact that there is a character called Aramini, which Wolfe fans would know well, meta-wink!
Love the introspective review, keep up the great work!
Absolutely agree about the impact finding the right story at the right time can do for You. Had known about Sun Eater for a while but didn't start reading it until last month. And when I did start, I binged through all of them and am currently reading Disquiet Gods. Picking up Sun Eater was was the best decision I made, reading-wise, this Year so far and I do have You to thank for that!
I haven't seen content from you in ages as my love for books and consequently my enjoyment of fantasy and sci fi in general waned , im glad this found me, this book seems like one I need to read at this Very moment in my life . Bless you Daniel 🙏🏻 definitely my favourite video I've seen of yours. Over the years we've grown fond of daniel the creator not just the content
Been watching since 2019. I do not know if I subscribed immediately or later in 2020, but I thank you for introducing me to this amazing world of books.
P.S. love to see the mic-dagger combo back.
You're a good dude, Daniel Greene. It takes guts to talk about stuff like this. This was a good review.
I'm sold on reading the first book. It's near the top of my TBR.
I haven’t read the series yet but now I’m going to. This is the best video you’ve made in awhile (excluding Fringe)
