He turned out great! The subtle armour colour is what sells it to me. Thank you for the dor filtering idea. It's something I will use in my painting soon
Thank you Henry for painting these models and going through the process of what you're doing and thinking, will 100% help me get through my pile of gray!
The last video was a great peek behind the curtain, but I'm really happy to see you were able to do this one too and show how it came together. Wonderful stuff, I'm doing a very different scheme for mine but there's still some approaches in here I may try to adapt. I especially like the way you did the axe blade, I love rougher looks like that and even managed to get my hands on darkstar metals already.
@@cultofpaint I'm enjoying them a lot! I like to be pretty rough with my metals, which was something I could do easily enough with GW metals but struggled to do with the otherwise wonderful Vallejo metal color. They've got a good consistency to let me use them in a variety of ways, and plenty of color options (also unlike VMC). Definitely glad I ordered them.
Looks great, I really like the cool grey of the armour and how it contrasts with the burgundy. Also way more readable than the first one, especially for the table
Waiting on the next part of this army. Also working on S2D army with belakor as its base :). I'm going for lava base, not sure how this would look on that, need to test it.
Great job. Slaves to Darkness would no doubt be my army if it weren't for the silly little leather boots that accompany the rest of their armored tank attires.
Well, it's not like those dynamics reflect in the army's performance currently. But those boots are out of place in terms of both aesthetics and tactical ingenuity. No doubt every single blade or arrow will be aimed at them on the battlefield.
Bro I felt the same so I just painted the bottom of the boots the same colour as my armour and then made it seem like they are just leather braces around the ankle/shin.
I really love this paint schema and the armour color. Any tips of how to get this armour color from standard (non oil) paints as a simple 80% solution?
I do really like the verdigris bits on your first model. Although not sure if it will fit your second one. What about some rust to contrast with the grey-green armor?
Great looking scheme, while I liked the first one for the grimdark look this new one is lovely! Also just wanted to ask what and who did that print you showed at the start?
Really enjoyed this and seeing the new scheme. Funny enough I think I actually like the first one better, but I can see how it might be too dark and monotone on the tabletop. Looking forward to more of this army!
I much prefer the new scheme, it looks really cool. The old model next to it looks really cool in a way as well, the much more muted look gives it a very brutal feeling of someone comparrably (even) less interested in looking fancy over being effective at bringing the hurt - might be tweaked a bit into a cool way to differentiate chosen further from standard warriors?
Would love to know if you managed any more progress with this army Henry? and if you did any of the Knights or Varanguard, how you approached them? Also, do you think you will review and of the upcoming Darkoath models? This is a project I really want to do but boy does it concern me how to paint an army which will have a lot of models with a lot of detail. I normally avoid armies like this because of the painting time, would love to know how you would approach them if you do receive any? Any, just being reviewing old videos as inspiration, love what you have been doing with the Age of Sigmar models alongside the 40k / Horus stuff 👍
The second model I definitely prefer the scheme a lot more. My one minor thought was that, whilst I didn’t think so with the previous model, this lighter version makes the purple stand out relatively speaking more such that the model does creep ever so slightly into looking Slaanesh marked. Just my 2p. Lovely looking model but maybe a bit more Slaaneshy than the unmarked you’re looking for
It’s close right. I think I’ll be ok as the units will have banners that are clearly undivided. And I’ll make sure not to cover them in…..alluring things.
@@cultofpaint The nature of this specific model is also that it has probably more of the purple accent colour (because of the length of the weapon wrap) than may be the case on the “average” model. So it’ll be less prominent on others too at a guess
Poking the Darkstar site as we speak, there's some interesting colors on there! I may have to snap up a few to try them out, because even though I'm trying to learn NMM as we speak? Unique metallic paints still have a place in my collection and painting, for sure. A bit spendy and the GBP is outdoing the USD right now, but definitely an interesting idea.
This paint scheme looks fantastic and I'm definitely getting Be'lakor vibes. I also really like those simple flat bases with pigments! I couldn't afford the new box set, but I managed to get ten Chosen as I'm starting a STD army. Lovely models, hey? I'm thinking about possibly going in a Khorne direction, but without all the red. PS. I tried following the Discord link to follow the Slaves projects, but it wouldn't work.
Aesthetically the new version is definitely more eye catching, especially on the table. That said, for me, the subdued scheme of the previous model would be more dreadful emerging from the inky blackness of a moon less night to pillage the village.
Hey Henry, not sure if you will see this message, but did you stick to doing this recipe throughout the army in the end? Did you end up making up any other changes to speed up the process? Also, what would you do for a colour receipe if you were to do the followers of Archaon instead?
@@cultofpaint I can't imagine how hard it is to keep up the volume of work you guys have to do so don't stress. I'm looking to paint my first s2D army soon. Do you offer any private courses that could help me?
Show bases would also detract a lot attention away from the model because of their brightness. Not the worst when army painting, but maybe alo not desirable. Especially because you mentioned that you don't like stark contrast (dark model, bright base).
Abteilung 502 doesn't dry fast at all. It is kind of shit for oil paints. Gamblin radiants, Gamblin Burnt Umber, and Fast Matte white are fast drying oil paints.
Absolutely love your style of painting. Find it so inspirational! 👌🏻
Thanks!!!!!!
Its really nice to see someone show that its ok to change directions and correct course.
Army is such a big project right, no point forging ahead when you’re not happy.

Good luck with that pile!
Your format for these videos is wonderful. Showing the results then the method is just perfection. Thank you for this content.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
I LOVE these experimenting/exploring colour scheme videos
Got a few ideas from watching you paint these, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!

That was the key aim for sure. If it was just for the shelf then the darker scheme ticks the boxes well enough.
Great job with the rework, that greenish grey oil filtering really brought the whole scheme together.
Oil filters really are great.

I'm new to this hobby and i just want to drop a comment and say WOW, this looks so freaking cool and i wish i can paint like you one day.
Welcome to the hobby!
8:20 that might be why you tend to make thinner oil washes than I usually make.
Glad you been doing the new set.
It’s a lot of fun
Excellent. Really grim dark and believable. Glad you chose to do the trim.
I really dig the scheme! I am excited to see your full army in this scheme.
Me too, roll on January!
I love what you did wish the axe! I'm stealing that recipe
Waiting on what you come up with painting the knights
very nice follow up video. appreachiate it :)
Really love that shade of grey on the armour. Excellent work!
Massive improvement in the second figure, love the colours.
Really loving this colour scheme. Great job.
This is the first video I've seen from you guys and man how the hell have I not heard of you guys before?
Also I really like the black armor as well.
Thanks, and welcome aboard!
Great job. Slaves to Darkness would no doubt be my army if it weren't for the silly little leather boots that accompany the rest of their armored tank attires.
Lots of loverly leather to paint though.
pretty bizarre... the whole reason you won't play the most dynamic army in aos is because some of the models have leather boots? hmm
But what if we told you it was vegan leather?
Well, it's not like those dynamics reflect in the army's performance currently.
But those boots are out of place in terms of both aesthetics and tactical ingenuity. No doubt every single blade or arrow will be aimed at them on the battlefield.
Bro I felt the same so I just painted the bottom of the boots the same colour as my armour and then made it seem like they are just leather braces around the ankle/shin.
Love it, that's how I imagine the forces of darkness to look like.
You should do a video on testing base schemes for your army
I’ll certainly do an update video on it. And if it’s worth it then a tutorial.
Gorgeous work!
I really love this paint schema and the armour color. Any tips of how to get this armour color from standard (non oil) paints as a simple 80% solution?
I am someone interested in slaves to darkness so this was very interesting
A work of art!
This scheme has a cool Alpha Legion vibe, if you we're looking for a Horus Heresy project, awesome video thanks.
I do really like the verdigris bits on your first model. Although not sure if it will fit your second one. What about some rust to contrast with the grey-green armor?
Any brassy bits will get some verdigris. Depends on what doodads each mini has.
love the armour colour
Fantastic scheme, looks a bit Richard Gray'esque in tone. Especially like how the purple accents complement the model. ☺
Dark grey, light grey, Richard Gray
Looks great! I think this scheme would look great for Sons of Horus too
Yeah. Or maybe Alpha Legion?
Think I preferred the grey on the first model but both are peek chaos warrior. The first vid essentially made me go out and buy the models 😂
Do it!
Looks amazing 👍Got to admit though, I liked the other model aswell.
I think the other with very minor tweaks would be cool, and I might use it for a unit.
Great looking scheme, while I liked the first one for the grimdark look this new one is lovely! Also just wanted to ask what and who did that print you showed at the start?
The Archaon one? It’s from one of the Battletomes, I think the artist was Kevin Chin
I think this would make quite an interesting alpha legion scheme, as an alternative to the metallic blue green.
Absolutely. Migs did a fantastic Alphas project with a colour not dissimilar to this.
Amazing videos, great content and models look 👌🏼 Do you varnish your models once completed to protect them? I haven’t done that yet but was curious
Hi Adam, I don't varnish them at the end to protect them. I like the different finishes you get from the different paints/materials etc
Absolutely amazing fam. This inspried n e to finally pick a scheme for my StD army.
Question: What colours did you use for the purple?
The ones in the video. Brown, burgundy, rakarth flesh.
@@cultofpaint I'm sorry mate! Was trying to find it quick when I went back and could only find the Burgundy 🤣
Lovely scheme.
Cheers!
What exactly is the color of your base coat before you start airbrushing?
Really enjoyed this and seeing the new scheme. Funny enough I think I actually like the first one better, but I can see how it might be too dark and monotone on the tabletop. Looking forward to more of this army!
That eternal struggle of shelf vs tabletop!
What oil wash colors would you use instead of the enamel wash?
This scheme looks much better
I much prefer the new scheme, it looks really cool.

I think I’ll have to tweak that original scheme and find a place for it in the army.

Great video Henry. If you were to do chipping, how would you achieve it? e.g. for character models?
I’d grab something like Vallejo model colour pale blue grey.
Love the videos. Which primer is he using?
This was colourforge matte black

How would you describe the differences between oil washes and enamel washes?
I think enamel washes give a finer “dustier” look
@@cultofpaint Thank you 🙂 I'd enjoy hearing your thoughts on different kinds of paint (acrylic, ink, oil, enamel, lacquer, gouache...), additives (mediums, thinner, flow improver, retarder, gel...) and techniques (layering, dry brushing, underpainting, stippling, wet blending, glazing, loaded brush, chipping...)
Looks remarkably like Migsula (of Ironsleet)'s Alpha Legion scheme.

how do you do the bases?

Can I ask, what are you using when you create the pin-wash? Is it all surfactant or some mix?
Just mineral spirit
