      Good catch, though technically it isn't that she taught her empathy, it is that she got her to realize that assimilating everyone forcefully hasn't filled the hole that has driven her and that it is time recognize it and to take a different approach. Appealing to a purely selfish motivation, not an empathetic one. Though it is an empathetic path so it still generally applies.

    for my money, as someone who generally did not enjoy this episode, I _liked_ how Picard's mother's fate reverberates into the events we saw in TNG's "Where No One Has Gone Before". Where before, in a place where fantasy becomes reality, it was just Picard seeing his dead mom, now it is bringing to life the unrealized "what if" scenario that would have led to his mother living a long, full life, if only for a moment. Then Riker suddenly butts in, breaking the moment, leading Picard to understandably snap "JUST A MOMENT, NUMBER ONE", but it's too late. The moment is gone.
    That's my one "up" for this episode. It made a TNG first season episode somewhat better. It's not much, but I'll take it

      Makes me think why they rejected Seven to join Starfleet but allowed Icheb to join. Was it because Icheb was much younger and not as exposed to the Borg as Seven was? Even though she proved herself over and over again on VOY that she was reliable and that without her Borg implants Voyager would have probably not made it back to the Alpha Quadrant at all as it was her implant they were able to use to stop Voyager crashing on that ice planet

      A) Picard liked to pretend to be a P.I. from the same time period. He knew how to work a Thompson, after all.
      B) From an NRA article from 2021: “'I’ve shot factory loads from the 1870s, and they went bang and hit the target accurately,' said NRA Museums Senior Curator Doug Wicklund, affirming that ammo can indeed last a long, long time."

    I am not so sure why there is an issue that Seven was not allowed to join Starfleet. They didn't trust Picard for basically the same reasons at the start of First Contact, a few years before the end of Voyager... there is precedent.
    I know this isn't a great answer, but maybe they just had something happen that caused a change of policy between Seven's rejection and Icheb's enrollment in Starfleet... there are a few years in between each action after all.

    • @Trekpanther
      @Trekpanther 2 роки тому +5

      I agree, it lines up with how Starfleet treated Picard then and makes sense for a post Battle of 001/Dominion War Federation to be very hesitant to accept individuals that have Borg components that can't be removed and even if that's ignored, the way we saw Seven being straight to the point and bristling against authority/forms that she saw no logic in, that doesn't seem like Starfleet material that'd do well in an Academy setting.

    • @andromidius
      @andromidius 2 роки тому +3

      Either that or it was another reason. Icheb was a child when assimilated and took no part in any assimilations before being freed. Seven, on the other hand, matured fully within the collective and was party to millions of assimilations. Even if you can't blame her directly for those actions, she was still a part of that. Ethically I suspect there's a real question about whether she should be part of an organisation that has members who've suffered because of her.
