  • I was given the opportunity to wear and test the Odysseus from A. Lang & Söhne for a week! So in this video I am not only reviewing the new sports steel watch from Lange, I am also going to tell you everything else you need to know about the newcomer from Glashütte!

    Watch specs: Reference 363.179
    Calibre: Datomatic L155.1
Case measurements: 40,5mm diameter, 111mm height
    Material: Steel
There have been a lot of rumors going around for a while regarding a sports steel watch from the german manufacturer Lange. Only few know though, that Lange has been planning a sports steel watch for quite some time - since the early 90s to be exact.
But still -compared to other big brands such as AP or Patek, Lange has been rather late to the sports steel game, so the question remains, whether or not the Odysseus is living up to such legends as the Royal Oak or the Nautilus, is it worth spending the 28.000 € price on and what is the availability going to be like?
To answer all the questions, we should first start by taking a closer look on the Odysseus:
The Odysseus has a diameter of 40,5mm, sports a lug to lug width of 49mm and is about 11,1mm thick. When first hearing these numbers, one might be surprised as it sounds rather small - but when you actually wear the watch you can immediately see how the lug-to-lug width gives the watch a bigger appearance than it really is.
As you can see here, my husband is wearing the watch with a 170mm wrist circumference and I would say that this is the absolute smallest wrist size that would be able handle the watch without it looking too big. So, if you have a smaller wrist than that you might run into trouble with the Odysseus.
Being made from stainless steel, this watch is way more robust and more scratch resistant that its brothers and sisters from Lage: We have been wearing this watch for about a week and there are zero to no signs of wear - something which I could not say from the Omega Speedmaster for example.
The case itself as well as the bezel have brushed and polished parts and look absolutely flawless.
One of the first things you might notice about the case are those two rather big blocks on the sides which are in fact two pushers and not crown guards as some might think - they allow you to set the day as well as the date on the watch. Pushing
them down feels quite satisfying and you can also hear a nice ‘click’ sound. The screw-down crown sits neatly in between these two pushers and gives the case its 120m water resistance which is an absolute first for Lange!
Going from the case to the bracelet you can see that said bracelet is integrated into the case - something that has been highly debated and for many an absolute dealbreaker on this watch, even though this bracelet might surprise you:
The Bracelet itself with its 5 links feels very smooth on the skin and when giving it a closer look you can see how elegantly brushed and polished those individual links are - Personally I think that the polished edges on the links are a very nice detail which gives the bracelet a sophisticated look which I really appreciate.
But the best part about the bracelet has to be the fact that you can easily adjust the bracelet to your wrist size without having to use any special tools! On the inside of the bracelet you have two little push points per link which you can press down with something like a toothpick to loosen the links as well as stick them back together.
But Lange did not stop here: With the Odysseus we also get a solid folding clasp that is elegantly hiding its quick adjustment underneath the engraved Lange&Söhne emblem on top of it. Totally on brand with the rest of the watches parts the emblem is also something you can - surprise- push down to quick adjust the length of the bracelet up to 7mm. You can even do that whilst wearing it - which is very convenient especially during the summer when your wrist size fluctuates during the day.
So the outside of the watch and how it has been built is definitively uncharted waters for Lange so I am sure you are - as much as I were before getting my hands on this watch - very curious to see what they have done on the dial, so lets see!:
The first thing you will notice is the variety of detail on this dial: The midnight blue dial is made from brass which to me is a rather conservative choice of color to be honest. But what it lacks in daring color choice it is making it up in showcasing different surface finishings: The outmost ring has embossed grooves whereas the center looks finely grained.
Lange repeats that finishing on its small second display which makes the small second stand out without breaking the ranks.
Right on top we find the Lange Logo which has been perfectly applied in crisp, white lettering which is immediately recognizable as the typical but slightly modified Lange-Font.
I am on IG now :-D
