Great video Erol. Your history is very interesting and I think you have a very good ear and a good memory. Like those guys from Liverpool that remembered so many songs and patterns after so many practice. I think some parts of music theory are beneficial to composing. Learning about the 12 notes and their relations, chord formation (major, minor, diminished, augmented, sus2, sus4, ...), and scales (major, minor, and some modes) is relatively easy and super useful. You don't need to learn to read music, but it helps a lot if you know a little bit. You can understand and follow a lead sheet at least, for example.

Theory is great, but agree it isn't 100% essential. As a drummer, I started playing with limited theory. Eventually got a bass and then a guitar a couple of years later. I started bugging my band mates for chord shapes. Then I learned a couple of scales (that I never practiced but DID learn lol). Over time (I've been playing for 30 years as a drummer) I learned all the open chords, barre chords etc. and for what I like to do, it's been enough. I think I learned more about music from playing along to records than anything else though. Later on I would learn about I, IV, V or whatever progressions which has helped me communicate with the rest of band.
I totally agree that it is a great shorthand, and for musicians who want to gig a lot in multiple bands, or be a studio musician, having a good theory background is almost a requirement. But if you want to be the next Green Day or Foo fighters, it isn't in my opinion.
