‘The Carnival of the Animals (Le carnaval des animaux)’ is a suite of orchestral music that Saint-Saëns spontaneously created for a carnival event on the last day of his vacation in a small rural village in Austria in 1886. The ‘Carnival of the Animals’, consisting of 14 pieces, is a suite themed on various animals, and it is a work that highlights Saint-Saëns’ humor and creativity, which cleverly expresses the characteristics of each animal through the combination of various instruments and musical expressions. The 13th piece in ‘The Carnival of the Animals’, ‘The Swan (Le Cygne)’, is the most famous piece in this suite, and the beautiful cello melody that flows calmly delicately depicts the figure of a swan swimming gracefully. For reference, during his lifetime, Saint-Saëns judged that ‘The Carnival of the Animals’ was too cheerful and light compared to his musicality and professionalism, so he only allowed the publication of ‘The Swan’, the 13th piece, and even prohibited the performance of the rest of the pieces.
