Sheku Kanneh-Mason, the record-breaking 19 year-old British cellist who became a viral sensation after being personally invited by the Duchess of Sussex to perform at Royal Wedding in May 2018. He previously rose to fame as the first black musician to win BBC Young Musician in 2016 and winner of The Times South Bank Breakthrough award 2017. Performing regularly as a soloist and twice at the BAFTA awards, Sheku’s debut album ‘Inspiration’ was released early 2018.
Sheku’s version of Bob Marley’s ‘No Woman, No Cry’ went viral worldwide and he became the first BBC Young Musician winner to enter the Official UK Albums Chart with a debut recording, as well as the youngest cellist ever to reach the Top 20. He is one of this year’s biggest breakthrough artists - across any genre.
Sheku has been on a whirlwind adventure since winning BBC Young Musician 2016 - performing Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’ at the BAFTAs in front of Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, playing at 10 Downing Street as part of the 30th anniversary of Black History Month, and making his BBC Proms debut as a soloist with Chineke! - Europe’s first majority BME (black and minority ethnic) orchestra - with the video of his performance going viral. He now studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London.

I wish people were more aware and grateful to classical music. You guys were awesome, this is one of my most favorite pieces.
I know, all people care about these are rap songs, full of cursing. I am 12 years old, and people in my class think classical music is really stupid, and when I say I like the songs, they all look at me like I'm out of my mind. People these days, honestly.
ps. I'm not saying that rap songs are bad, I'm just saying classical music is so much better in my opinion, just before I get any hate.

Probably one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard.
Musicians like Sheku come around once in a hundred years or so......he’s an icon......he’s so young. How can he get any better as he ages? Of course he will....... but right now it feels like we’re listening to perfection. What’s better than this, may l ask? This is magnificence personified.......💙💙💙💙💙

Currently reading ‘A thousand boy kisses’ and came across this piece when Poppy mentioned it, and man the great epiphany that dawned on me when I realized that this was my favorite pieces of all time and that I just never knew the name of it. Reading how Poppy won’t be able to peruse her passion is saddening but she taught me a lot of moral things. That’s what makes the love story in this so special.

My dad sent me this video to me when I was playing this song. That's when i started hearing Sheku play other songs like Sicilienne which I'm starting now. He is such a special man, amazing man, talented, I wish he could be more famous as a classical musician.

An inspiration. For many years, I couldn't listen to classical cello playing. It would actually cause me emotional pain, as I dealt with serious depression studying it. However, I have begun to have joy since discovering this artist. :)
