Dr. Jill Carnahan is a Functional Medicine expert, Board Certified in American Board of Integrative Medicine and Family Practice she addresses the impact of #toxins and pathogens on our immune system, nervous system and in turn our mental health, an area known as #psychoneuroimmunology.
In this fascinating interview she discusses some lesser known factors of poor mental health, explaining how a #leakygut, #toxins, pathogens and environmental stressors can underlie depression, insomnia, cognitive decline, anxiety, ADHD, and even trauma response.
Lipopolysaccharide endotoxemia may not be the first thing you think of in terms of depression, cognitive decline, anxiety, insomnia, etc, but according to Dr. Carnahan it is one of the biggest factors in our mental health. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is a bacteria coating in our gut and it can have a hugely potent inflammatory immune effect when it escapes the gut lumen. Toxins in our environment (such as pollution, mould, infections) and/or in our diets, as well as psychological stressors (including isolation and loneliness), can massively impact the degree of permeability of the cells in the gut, which can lead to leaky gut and the release of bacteria, LPS and food particles into the blood stream.
This leads to an immune inflammatory response which in turn releases thousands of cytokines into the body. In particular, the overproduction of the cytokine IL-6 is linked to low mood, depression, insomnia, bipolar and anxiety. Therefore a compromised gut lining is very much linked to our mental health via inflammatory mechanisms.

Animal fats are frequently contaminated with LPS (bacterial wall components) which are highly inflammatory (+TNFa, +IL-6 via TLR2, 4 receptors). In one study, the highest amounts were found in: pork, turkey, cheese, ice cream, chocolate, and fast-food burgers. LPS has an affinity for chylomicrons which transport dietary fats from gut into circulation without a leaky gut. Is this correct?

IL 6 is a myokine released after exercise so why is it bad for mood and health?

Maybe IL-6 is released by muscles to damage incurred by exercise but since it isn't caused by a pathogen maybe the body knows to ignore it.
