Hi Adam, I say leave it just as you say a good clean up that will look much better, You are doing a great job it’s going to be great when finished best of luck with it. Take care of yourself and stay safe.
Leave the original paint on it. I was going to repaint my Ideal Hit & Miss engine until I cleaned it and seen how good the paint was and kept the old paint.
Hi Adam. What a smashing little engine. I had no idea Staurts did any four strokes. I am with others. If that engine was built up by a student in the 1930's or 40's that guy will be long gone. It wont have that paint ever again if its painted and I get fed up with stationary engines that look like Aston Martins and are all shiny. They are working machines in my view. I have really enjoyed the showman's yard in Kent and the stuff you have looked through. I cant watch any of the Methwold videos as my dad died a couple of years ago and he loved working there along with my Aunt and Uncle from Brandon who used to do the Easter sales with him. That little red oil can brings back memories. They were called something like a valve oiler. As a school leaver I worked on the American Air Bases in Suffolk and an old boy had one which was his fathers. Its perfect for those little oil holes in older machinery without flooding oil everywhere. I recall him mixing SAE 30 and a little paraffin together for the oil can. The new house and shed looks the business.
The spark plug has been filed in that way for a reason, it looks like the threads are exposed to the combustion process so would get encrusted with carbon making it extremely difficult to remove the plug without damage. As for paint, LEAVE IT.
When I do valve lapping with a drill I find it easier to slip a bit of rubber tube (3 or 4 inches) on the valve stem, grip the other end of the tube in the drill. Gives a bit of wiggle/flex and smooths things out a bit. Don't paint it, lovely as is.
You're a bit off with your info. 1913 would have been a different open crank, the 1/2hp and 1/4hp open cranks had an atmospheric inlet and a under slung rocker for exhaust. The Sandhurst was introduced during the inter-war period. About the machining, only the top deck was machined by Stuart here is the advert info: The Crankshaft, Con-Rod, Bearings, etc., can be made of plain bar material, but Piston Rings and Valves are supplied with the Castings - they are the work of the specialist. One piece of machining we do in every set of castings - the facing and boring of the bed to take the cylinder. It is easily and accurately done on our machine tools, but is extremely difficult in the average amateur's workshop. Magnetos weren't supplied with the engine and neither was carburettor (one that suited could be bought from Stuart) so engine can't be dated by the magneto as the builder would have fitted what was around. Not all were supplied to Sandhurst, they were available to the Civilian population, especially post WW2.
Wow when you spun that flywheel and it just kept on turning , The friction value must be extremely low was the flywheel and shaft Dynamically balanced by any chance , and that was in a dirty condition ,
Can run these on gas or petrol just check when you took the crank of one of the studs looked slightly bent the one that wouldn't come out just check any news on the perkins engine up the cafe ?
The earliest catalogue I've seen them in is 1937, they aren't in the 20s catalogues. In it all the way up to 1958 using the same catalogue photo, no change of magneto.
I'd leave the paint as it's part of the history/patina of the engine, very weird about the N5 spark plug, do you think they were trying to raise the compression ratio?
Check the thread in the cylinder head . Does it go all the way through ? Could it be a non standard plug thread and somebody has butchered that plug because of a mismatch of thread and it would only screw in a few turns before it jammed ? Don’t paint it please.
That cyclinder looks glazed to me, you need a dingleberry honey to put a little cross hatching back in the bore or it will most likely burn oil and have some blowback
Leave it original it was be a shame to pait it. Marvellous how the old minral oil protected it for so many years and bearings ran smooth. Makes me wonder would the new synthetic oils stand the test of time. Or is the expiry date on oil bottles these days just another con 😊 👍🏴
Leave the paint, use boiled Linseed oil on a brush this will bring it up a treat and feed the paint. You can remove it later with white spirit you you wan to paint it. Remember you can't replace it's patena I used Linseed on a Crossley HRL2 Marine two stroke, never had problem with corrosion between joints.
Oily rag mate! Don't paint it, that patina is beautiful. Take your time with it. 😊
Don’t keep us waiting too long. Can’t wait to see it run.
Clean it polish any brass but leave the original paint, really enjoyed this one love that little engine.
I know nothing about engines but I really enjoyed this video, very interesting. I think leave the paint as it is, looks great
Hi Adam I would leave as it is. Looks great..
Leave the old paint - it's beautiful!
Clean and oily rag and sandie will look perfect 👍

It looks fine as it is.
Keep it original! I'm glad the cafe chap gave you first dibs on everything, they have certainly gone to a good home! 👍
You marn’t paint that old boy, as just lovely as she is!
It does not look too bad so I would not paint it. I cannot wait to see it run.
I think you should leave it as is. It has so much character. Looking forward to the follow up vid 👍

Hey Adam. Great video but would I be right in thinking that head gasket would have contained asbestos? Hope you protected yourself matey.
Just what my husband said...
Be careful Adam 😲😲

I would leave the paint, they are only original once. It’s a beautiful thing.

Just a good clean and buff leave the paint as it's original paint " I never liked SANDY with new paint " just the way she is😂😂
Would be good to see one of your completed and working!
Wow when you spun that flywheel and it just kept on turning , The friction value must be extremely low was the flywheel and shaft Dynamically balanced by any chance , and that was in a dirty condition ,
Very good video, not sure about painting it tho, it looks like the base plate is a different colour to the block what one is the correct one 🤔🤔
Absolutely love this little engine 👍🏻. Gaw to hell oily rag please mate
looking good carnt wate to c it run ❤
I wonder if the spark plug thread was ground off because carbon build up? Might make it really difficult to remove.
Can run these on gas or petrol just check when you took the crank of one of the studs looked slightly bent the one that wouldn't come out just check any news on the perkins engine up the cafe ?
leave it be looks great

Leave well alone nothing wrong with the paint.
just wondering, did the cam gear have a thread in one of the four holes to wind a bolt in up against the crank case to lock it in place?
Strip it, wash it all down, clean it all ,lubricate it well rebuild it but please do not paint it it's only original one time . lovely engine..
Check the thread in the cylinder head . Does it go all the way through ? Could it be a non standard plug thread and somebody has butchered that plug because of a mismatch of thread and it would only screw in a few turns before it jammed ? Don’t paint it please.

Clean, polish & lubricate 👍

And from this moment on all measurements will mysteriously be short
More likely to be too long
Are you wearing protection Adam..??
That old head gasket could contain Asbestos!!
Keep original it shows its story
Surely valve with all carbon on would be on exhaust side not inlet
All way give you a thumb 👍 up
Dont ever worey about the video being too long. In my opinion, the longer the video.....the better. Dont paint it, as its got great patina.
Leave it original it was be a shame to pait it. Marvellous how the old minral oil protected it for so many years and bearings ran smooth. Makes me wonder would the new synthetic oils stand the test of time. Or is the expiry date on oil bottles these days just another con 😊 👍🏴
