Some considerations:
1- Sunset Blvd should have been WAY higher. It's one of the greatest movies of all time.
2- Tropic Thunder should not have been here. It's good, but drop movies like Barton Fink and Adaptation to put it there, it just doesn't make sense.
3- I take it you guys haven't seen "Day for Night" by François Truffant. Because it should be at least top 3.
Agree that Sunset Boulevard was way too low, but I do think that Tropic Thunder should be on here. I think it's a really good satire of Hollywood and the people who work there, and while Adaptation and Barton Fink (which are reworded movies I love) are more interesting, Tropic Thunder is a better film ABOUT filmmaking, at least to me.
Where's Dreamgirls, ghost rider, spy kids, grown ups, mass effect 3, and Boy meets world? Fucking fail shit list.
trololol
Mass effect is a game and most or all the movies have little to nothing about filmaking
***** why cuz i am right? Stfu kid go have a juicebox
GRIM backbiter Wow, you're the only kid here and yeah you're stupid because you're right.
To you, but not to me.
What about Cinema Paradiso?????? Does anyone here remember that movie???
....obviously ....its my love.... From India 😌
Yes!!! I remember it well ;__;
There is also "La nuit américaine"by François Truffaut. Probably named "The american night". Could be in honorables mentions.
ok :)
It was named "Day For Night"
how about 2012 hitchcock that movie was pretty good
Now I know why I felt like something was missing.
It was very good! :)
I am glad you brought it up, but it didn't really focues that much about creating the movie (which in this case is Psycho), but more about how the controversy about this movie affected Hitchcock his life.

Cinema paradiso maybe?....
Hugo is a bit unfocused. The first half doesn't have anything to do about filmmaking.
Although Hugo involves real people like George Melies, it's ultimately a fictional story, based on the children's book The Invention Of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick.
Alex Meyer Yeah. I know its really good but again, the first half of the movie has anything to do with it.
But it still takes up about half of the film, so it can count.
In case anyone was wondering, the filmmaker they mentioned in Hugo was George Melies, a French filmmaker who started out as a magician and saw films as another way to create an illusion.
Also, in Singin' in the Rain, Gene Kelly had a cold and 103 degree fever when doing the song "Singin' in the Rain," and it was Debbie Reynolds' first film, so she had to be taught how to dance for it.
What about top 10 films about making films on Film making?
That's pretty much what THIS list is.
Alex Meyer Not really, I'm taking about a film about making a film about making films.
I don't think there's a lot of those. Not even 10.
ABED all caps
Wouldn't that just be like the Making Of footage for Tropic Thunder or something?
What about Saving Mr. Banks?
Would King Kong fall into this category?
yeah
It could have at least been an honorable mention.
My favourite movie of all time? Hell yes!!
I think they just forgot or something ...
and so is"lovelace'' XD
Richard Rush's "The Stunt Man" (1980) deserved a place on the list.
"The Muse" is an underrated and forgotten movie starring Albert Brooks and Sharon Stone about a screenwriter seeking to restart his slump by letting a muse into his life & home to inspire him into creativity. Good and funny film!
I will never be able to hear Singin' in the Rain without immediately thinking of Clockwork Orange.
You forgot François Truffaut's "Day For Night" (La Nuit Américaine - 1973) a tremendous movie about filmmaking in general and what happens to the various people on set, the love stories, the drama, the funny moments and all that. It's really great!
It has also largely inspired a very funny Wes Anderson's commercial for American Express.
In fact I was very surprised to see Contempt and not Day for Night on this list =)
What about Cinema Paradiso?
Had I never had seen 8 1/2 I would have forever had questioned its relevance and status. Having seen it, it is one of the most amazing films ever made.
Where's Day for Night (1973)??? One of the Greatest films about the film making process!!! List is invalid.
The Artist at Nr. 3, but Barton Fink & Adaption only honorable mentions. Don't get me wrong: The Artist is a great movie, but Barton Fink & Adaptation are masterpieces
I've never seen ed wood, but it looks like something i would enjoy. This is why I subscribed to watchmojo, not to validate my opinion on which country has the best album, but to be exposed to new music, movies ect that I never new of.
Ever watched and considered "Day for Night" from François Truffaut (1973) for your list ?
Nice list, and as an Italian I totally agree with Federico Fellini's masterpiece at the top (also with the 2nd and the 3rd). The only thing: Sunset Blvd. should have been higher.
For me, there are at least 3 great missing movies in this list:
- Day for Night by François Truffaut;
- Silent Movie by Mel Brooks;
- Chaplin by RIchard Attenborough.
Bowfinger was underrated one of the funniest films I've ever seen
Awesome list
Ed Wood is one of my most favorite movies and Johnny Depp performance of all time
Saving Mr. Banks(2013) That's about Walt Disney talking to the author of Marry Poppins about producing the 1969 Mary Poppins movie. Should be on the list.
HOW THE FUCK IT'S TROPIC THUNDER, HUGO, CONTEMPT, BOOGIE NIGHTS, THE PLAYER, THE ARTIST, ED WOOD OR BE KIND REWIND BETTER THAN ADAPTATION AND FUCKING SUNSET BOULEVARD??? WHO MADE THIS LIST?????
If we should update this list, I would add The Disaster Artist on the list. A great movie about the making of The Room
sullivans travels?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! I mean I guess its not about a filmmaker in the process of filming, but inspiration is arguably the most important part of a film, and that is the essence of Preston Sturges' classic
There are a few criminal omissions in this list, like Living in Obliivion, Cinema Paradiso and specially Truffault's La nuit américaine (Day for Night).
Where is Saving Mr. Banks? That movie is amazing and WAY underrated. If you don't know the plot already, it is about Walt Disney trying to create Mary Poppins.
not 1970's "Silent Movie?"
I was glad to see "Bowfinger" at least get an honorable mention!
What do you think about "Day for Night" by François Truffaut? In my opinion is the best meta-cinema example ever made.
I found it quite weird that you showed clips from Living in Oblivion, but did not even feature it among the honorable mentions, especially since it much better than both Be Kind Rewind and Bowfinger.
Really can't believe The Aviator wasn't on this list
i love the player, one of my fav. movies of all time
Missing: Stardust Memories (Woody Allen), Cinema Paradiso (Giuseppe Tornatore) but mostly, and I think it's a huge mistake: François Truffaut's *La Nuit Américaine* -- I though it would be on top or near it.
You should have included "Day for Night" and "The Way We Were"
Seven Psychopaths?
Seven Psychopaths was a great movie. Should have at least got a mention.
it's more about writing the screenplay, but I love that 1, and since Adaptation got an HM, it deserved a mention.
batgurrl exactly, there's no film without the screenplay. you can't jump into production without the pre-production first, so it's all still filmmaking. even movies like step brothers that were heavily improvised have an outline to base everything off of
Douche Bag Dingle Berry Breath
that is vert true, but I don't come away with that being the main or only focus. It's just his reflexive humor thrown in. It's such an original screenplay with great actors in something darkly comic. With Christopher Walken involved it's usually hard to go wrong.Tom Waitts and his Zodiac bunny was a nice touch - hehe
batgurrl yeah there's alot more going on and these others are more focused on the entire process or at least the filming so it should have been just been an honorable mention because it's such a good movie and does relate to this topic, just not as much
Burt Reynolds totally deserved the Best Supporting Oscar for his epic role in BOOGIE NIGHTS....
the player is easily one of my faves, with ed wood coming in at a very close 2nd.
My favourite film about filmmaking has to be "Chaplin". It's poignant, charming, funny, fascinating and really captures a man's passionate love towards the art of film.
Love you "WM guys". Adore watching your videos...but I just can't believe that Living in Oblivion is not on this list. Now that's....simply...impossible. All the best!
I really like the background music in this video.
Sunset Blvd. is mandatory viewing. Really aged well. Could be number one imo
Now this was an awesome list. All of these are great movies.
Super 8??
According to an article I found on cracked, Inception is a metaphor for film making.
When I saw the title I knew 8 1/2 would be number 1, good job WM !
Having worked unionized in the film industry for just over a year and a half now, I can confirm that « Living in oblivion » is the most accurate film that portrays what a film set is like in terms of crew dynamic. Not all film sets are hell though, but they’re definitely more intense than your local McDonald’s kitchen.
Where is "Get Shorty"? It is one of my all time favourite films and deserves to be on this list. Once again watchmojo drops the ball!
Berberian Sound Studio should be on this list. A horror movie that is set around doing the foley sound design of a horror movie.
Shadow of the Vampire? A fictional account of the making of FW Murnau's Nosferatu in which Murnau must contend with working with Max Schreck, a real life vampire.
Yes! The Artist! :D
Great film!
I know it's a pretty obscure film but I can't escape the feeling that Evil Ed should have been on this list. Though the movie is about editing and not screenwriting, producing or directing
Man sunset boulevard was a kick ass movie! It's on Netflix. I highly recommend it
Where is Living in Oblivion? Why is it not even in the honorable mentions list? That film almost perfectly sums up everything that filmmaking is about, to not include it is criminal. THIS LIST NEEDS A REDUX RIGHT NOW PLEASE!!!!
If this video was made today, disaster artist would be on here for sure
Is Argo considered?
I watched 8 1/2 when I was about fifteen or so. I was so confused throughout the entire film, but even then, I knew that this is a monumental feat in filmmaking.
I recommend 8 1/2 to any aspiring filmmaker.
I'm going to make a feature film called 'High School Shooting the Musical' in 2024
the movies in the list are too much centered on the art aspect, whereas movies about the technicalities or daily business of shooting a film like "living in oblivion" didn't even make it on the list. This list needs to be reconsidered...
Art is technology.
"The Wizard of Speed and Time" needed to be on this list.
Where is Aviator?!
ciao wutang but they did it, they chose two films of Martin in one list
ciao wutang The Aviator is much better than "Hugo" in my opinion. I'm also not a fan of having half of the list set in the 20's.
No mention of "Shadow of The Vampire"? I think it had one of the most interesting premises I have ever seen.
Thoguh Fellini's already mentioned I still think his "Intervista" should be mentioned.
Great list.
Does Argo count?
Singing in the rain should've been in the top three. Not only is it an awesome story, the soundtrack is amazing!
"Get Shorty" didn't even get a mention?
did it fail to make the criteria?
So a film about filmmaking. Filmception!
(I'm going to hell for this, aren't I?)
what about Heart of Darkness? it's not just some damn making of Apocalypse Now, it's a full blown documentary that goes deep into the production.
I question if Argo should be on this list since it is about making a movie, but at the same time it is about getting hostages back to the US.
What about Stardust Memories? That was good.
Son of Rambow gets making movies with your cool friends so well. That doesn't count as "hollywood", but its still incredible
What shouldn't be on this list: Hugo.
What should've been on this list: Saving Mr. Banks.
No "Chaplin?" Seriously? Not even an honorable mention for "Chaplin????"
I feel like "Adaptation." and "Barton Fink" should have ranked.
This is flawed without the inclusion of "Hitchcock," starring Anthony Hopkins, about the making of "Psycho." Also, you guys are missing "The Aviator!" I mean, I was glad to see both "Hugo" and "The Artist" make the list as well, but to leave out the two I mentioned is a giant mistake.
I'm not sure if American Movie counts since it's nonfiction and more of a documentary. But it is one of my favorite movies of all time.
Pretty good list. The only awful film on it is Tropic Thunder, which should have easily been replaced by any of the honorable mentions.
Number one, the filmception of filmceptions
Excellent choice for #1!
I would have given "7 Psychopaths" an honorable mention and "Adaptation" would have been in my top 5.
My Week With Marilyn, they got the characters spot on
The Aviator?
Subarashii!!
Gods and Monsters? No? Also, Barton Fink deserved much more than an honorable mention. How you could consider Tropic Thunder better than either of these two is beyond me. #1 and #2 were right, though.
Borat starts as a film about a foreigner making a documentary and defiantly is worthy of being in this top 10
Day for Night or La Nuit américaine (1973)?
La nuit américaine (Day for Night) by François Truffaut.
The Stunt Man, Shadow of the Vampire, Day of the Locust and of course King Kong.
Living in a Oblivion it's a great example of a low budget film do it a film about low budget film
I would ditch 'Tropic Thunder'; shouldn't be on the list with so many great movies about filmmaking out there.
My Top 10:
01. Cinema Paradiso (1988)
02. Contempt (1963)
03. 8 1/2 (1963)
04. Sunset Blvd. (1950)
05. Mulholland Dr. (2001)
06. Close Up (1990)
07. Sullivan's Travels (1941)
08. Singin' in the Rain (1952)
09. Barton Fink (1991)
10. The Bad and the Beautiful (1952)
Honorable mentions: Day for Night (1973), The Artist (2011), Boogie Nights (1997), The Player (1992)
and Peeping Tom (1960)
I new 8 1/2 would be #1
:)
Weird. There were clips of Living in Oblivion in this video but they didn't even mention it. Also, Shadow of the Vampire could have used a nod.
Maybe I'm misunderstanding the list... but what about CHAPLIN or James Dean. The film with James Franco?
What about Argo? I know it was about making a fake movie, but making it was central to the plot, and, unlike several movies on this list, it was entirely based on a true story (not saying that the movies that are fictitious here are bad, but that films about real films being made are always interesting to watch, just look at how high Ed Wood got with that concept).
