    I always liked Chakotay and felt they did him (and Harry Kim) a disservice. Kim should have been promoted at least to Lt. and Chakotay should have had a lot more compelling stories.

      Voyager was just more about female leads (janeway,7of9 later on) as oposed to other trek shows at the time who had mostly male lead stars.

    One thing I always liked about Chakotay was that, despite his genuine respect for Janeway and basically rejoining Starfleet by coming on board of Voyager, he still had genuine doubts about Starfleet protocols and rules, that originally pushed to join Maquis in the first place. At several points during the series, you can tell that he followed Janeway's orders almost without question, but he did show he had huge reservations about alot of them.

      Same. I think its because they never really did anything with it. He doesn't describe his personal ancestry, he has no decoration or personal effects. No different lifestyle. Cherokee have different traditions from Navajo, Crow, Shawnee, and so on. There are no traditions that we see, nothing on the Holodeck.
      He could have easily played something out on the holodeck, creating a life for himself within a tribe. It could have played a part in his decision to work on the maquis, it could have played any part. IT was just relegated to a tattoo.
      Or even better, don't give him a tribe, and allow him to to figure out his spirituality and identity on his own, adapting to life away from his native planet.

      I’ve always referred to him as ‘Mayincaztecan’ because so much of the symbology associated with him is mixed and blended. And my references to Mayan, Incan, and Aztecan cultural notes don’t even account for the South-West USA inclusions visible with his dream quests and some of the blankets and art in his quarters. He’s a very 90s ‘this guy is native’ kind of character without much grounding in reality.

      purely depends on rank and the short hand that military uses. being within a ship he could easily be called the XO (2nd in command) but he's never referred to that way because its not the starfleet way. B'elanna Torres is the best example she's called chief because she holds the job chief engineer but really she's a lieutenant junior grade, this is their rank "slang" that starfleet has adopted and B'elanna or even scotty (a lieutenant commander) would never be introduced by their rank they will be introduced by the position they hold, chief engineer.

    it's pretty common in the US Military to abbreviate rank names in less-than-formal conversation. In most cases, you wouldn't make a distinction between a First Lieutenant and a Second Lieutenant, nor between a Sergeant and a Staff Sergeant. You might occasionally see a Private First Class referred to as "PFC [Whoever]" but equally likely to see them referred to as simply Private. In fact, the reason we have the phrase "Full Bird Colonel" is because referring to a Lieutenant Colonel as simply Colonel is so common, people felt a need to emphasize the higher rank. My experience is in the Army, not the Navy, but I imagine the same holds true. Sincerely (former) Specialist (Full Bird Private) RL Dodson.

    Regarding rank in Star Trek: It is tradition in the US Navy to refer to address fellow officers as "Ensign," "Lieutenant," and "Commander." Also, communication brevity is valued in the Navy. If Commander Chakotay were ever to be addressed as "Lieutenant Commander," it would be by Captain Janeway and only if he were in SERIOUS TROUBLE .. or getting promoted .. or being buried .. which are similar to being in trouble.

Saludos.

      I agree, I feel he should have been promoted along the way. Hey Tom Paris lost his Lt rank by disobeying Janeway and being thrown into the brig but regained it back after only a year if I am not mistaken which doesn't make sense. I guess Janeway preferred Tom Paris more then Harry Kim.

    It's naval tradition to refer to an officer as the "higher" rank unless it's something formal (award ceremony or court martial, etc.). My DIVO (division officer) was a Lt.JG and my Dept. Head was a Lt.CMD, they were called LT and CMD.

    The Chakotay Seven romance was totally out of left field. I mean They broadcast for years that Harry was smitten, and I could understand deflating him at the end and having him grow through it, but there is zero chemistry or character history to telegraph that Seven and Chakotay even think about each other actively.

    the rank naming thing is from the navy. lt cmdr is cmdr, ltjg is lt, petty officer third through first class are just petty officers. the only exceptions youll see are chief petty officer and above with senior chief petty officer being cut to senior and master chief petty officer to master chief.

    Is chakotay his first name or last name? Sometimes they refer to him as Mr chakotay which would mean he has to have a first name right?
    Not to mention Mr Tuvok and Mr Nelix are these their first names?

    • @Vipre-
      @Vipre- 2 роки тому +5

      Chakotay may only have/use a single name, similar to Klingons. Spock mentions in TOS that he does in fact have a last name but it's unpronounceable by humans so the same might apply to Tuvok with Tuvok being his given name. Neelix may also only have one name, a family name was never mentioned but Neelix is certainly his first name.
      The mistake here is assuming all cultures must use two names.

    2nd and 1st lieutenants are both referred to as lieutenant. Lieutenant Colonels are referred to as Colonel. It’s just the way the military is. Generals are all called general. Unless there’s a reason to clarify the rank.

  • @seannemo8076
    @seannemo8076 2 роки тому +4

    8:45 You say its common in Starfleet to "replace" a lower rank with the higher on; but this is actually a common US military custom. Lieutenants JG and 2nd Lieutenants are habitually simply referred to as "Lieutenant" (Although so are 1st Lieutenants); Lieutenant Commanders as Commander; Lieutenant Colonels as Colonel. Its simply shorthand, because people are lazy and don't want to use the full rank.

    ST:TNG Season Seven actually rakes place in the year 2370, with Season One having taken place in 2364. So, Chakotay’s resignation adds up in Preemptive Strike. Voyager never upheld continuity… like the DS9/VOY uniforms being shown on a ship that was inserted into The Battle at Wolf 359
